I have heard men say that seeing is believing. But I would say that feeling is believing, for though I had seen much before, I never knew the very pain of life till now.
My new owner was Nicholas Skinner. He was hard on his drivers, and they were hard on the horses. We worked for long hours and had no Sunday rest. My driver was just as hard as his master, and he had a cruel whip (残忍的鞭子) with something sharp at the end which often cut me and made me bleed. It was a terrible life, and sometimes, I wished I was dead.
One day I nearly got my wish. We were at the railway station when a family of four people hired us. Box after box was put on the top of the cab (马车). Then the driver hit me with his whip and we moved out of the station. I had not eaten or rested since early that morning. I did my best and got along quite well until we came to Ludgate Hill. By then I was exhausted, and the heavy cab was too much for me. My feet went from under me and I fell heavily, knocking all the breath out of me. I lay quite still because I could not move. There were angry voices above me and luggage (行李) was taken off the cab, but it was all like a dream. Cold water was thrown over my head, some medicine was put into my mouth, and I was covered with a cloth.
I don’t know how long I was there until a kind voice asked me to try to get up and I succeeded. Skinner took the doctor’s advice and, after rest and food, I was taken to the horse market ten days later.

Thousands of years ago, Chinese poet Qu Yuan wrote the poem Tianwen, meaning Quest for Heavenly Truth. He came up with a series of questions about the sky, stars, nature and the world around us. The poem showed his spirit of finding the truth.
Inspired (激励) by the great poet, China named its latest series of planetary exploration missions (行星探测任务) after the poem in 2020. The first one in the series — a Mars exploration mission — has been named Tianwen 1, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said on April 24th, 2020, China’s Space Day. This shows China’s wish to explore the universe.
China has made great progress in space exploration. In 1970, China sent its first man-made Earth satellite (卫星), becoming the fifth country in the world to send a man-made satellite independently. Since 2003, China has carried out six Shenzhou manned missions. China’s moon exploration missions — the Chang’e series — started in 2007. In December 2018, China became the first country to send the probe (探测器) Chang’e 4 to the moon’s far side.
The Tianwen series will follow the Shenzhou and Chang’e series and move further into space. The first step is to send a Mars probe this year, which will mean the start of China’s exploration of the red planet. The probe is planned to circle around, land on and explore Mars in one mission. If it succeeds, it will be the first to finish all of these tasks in one mission. The Long March 5 rocket will send the probe to Mars.
After this mission, China plans to visit Mars again in 2028, aiming to collect soil from the ground of the planet and bring it to Earth. Around 2030, China will explore Jupiter and several small planets.
31. The first Mars exploration mission is named Tianwen 1 because _______.
A. it explains the spirit of Chinese people
B. it shows the wish of exploring the universe
C. it has many questions about the sky, stars and the world
32. Paragraph 3 mainly tells us _______.
A. how China explored the moon
B. how many missions China has completed
C. the development of China’s exploration in space
33. “The red planet” in paragraph 4 refers to _______.
A. Moon B. Mars C. Jupiter
34. What do we know about the Mars exploration mission?
A. China will send the probe on Space Day.
B. It will be the first mission of the Tianwen series.
C. China will send a Mars probe named Long March 5.
35. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. China Started to Explore Mars
B. Tianwen and China’s Exploration Missions in Space
C. The History of Chinese Planetary Exploration Missions

What is a diplomat (外交官) like in your eyes? Is he good at English? Is he a talented person, skilled in both arts and sports? Must he be smart with a pair of glasses? If the answers are “yes”, Yang Jiechi may be the perfect diplomat.
As the first Chinese foreign minister (部长) born (生于) after 1949, Yang met many difficulties. He was accepted into the Shanghai Foreign Language School, but later he had to work in a factory. Other workers in the factory chatted and played cards together in their free time, while Yang didn’t give up English learning. He studied English independently by reading English magazines and reading articles aloud after work. His hard work paid off and he was chosen into the Foreign Ministry (外交部) in 1973.
Soon after he became the youngest Chinese ambassador (大使) to the US in Jan. 2001, a serious accident happened. In April that year, a US spy (间谍) plane crashed with a Chinese plane, killing the Chinese pilot and having a must-landing in Hainan. The two sides fought over whether the US should say sorry first or China should give back the US pilot. During an interview with CNN, Yang compared China’s situation to a family. One day one of the family members comes out to check but is killed in a crash. “I think the family has every right to ask why and find out what happened,” he said.
Yang’s reasonable talk touched many Americans. 30 percent of American people changed their mind to believe the US government should say sorry.
“He is willing to look from the other person’s side, which is important in communication and dealing with difficulties,” said Shirley Young, one of Yang’s American friends.
41. Yang is the first Chinese foreign minister, isn’t he?
42. How did Yang learn English during working in a factory?
43. When did the US spy plane crash with a Chinese plane?
44. Why did Yang compare China’s situation to a family in the interview with CNN?
45. According to the passage, if someone has problems in communicating with others, what should he do?
