Individuals wh learn tw languages at an early age seem t switch back and frth between separate "sund systems" fr each language, accrding t a new study.
The study lked at 32 Spanish-English early bilingual (双语的) speakers, wh had earned their secnd language befre age 8. They were presented with wrds beginning with a 'pa' r a 'ba' sund.
While 'pa' and 'ba' sunds exist in bth English and Spanish, hw thse sunds are prduced and perceived in the tw languages varies slightly. Fr example, Spanish speakers prduce 'pa' in a manner similar t English 'ba'. As a result, English-nly speakers might. in sme cases, cnfuse the 'ba' and 'pa' sunds they hear in Spanish, explains Kalim Gnzales, lead authr n the study.
Fr the study, the bilingual participants were divided int tw grups. One grup was tld they wuld be hearing rare wrds in Spanish, while the ther was tld they wuld be hearing rare wrds in English. Bth grups heard audi recrdings f variatins f the same tw wrds-bafri and pafri-which are nt real wrds in either language. Participants were then asked t identify whether the wrds they heard began with a 'ba' r a 'pa' sund.
The findings: Participants perceived 'ba' and 'pa' sunds differently depending n whether they were tld they were hearing Spanish wrds. r whether they were tld they were hearing English wrds.
"What this shwed is that when yu put them in English mde. they actually wuld act like English speakers. and then if yu put them in Spanish mde. they wuld switch t acting like Spanish speakers. "Gnzales said. " This shws bilinguals d have tw different sunds systems and that they can switch between ne language and the ther and then use that sund system. "
"But if yu learn a secnd language later in life. yu usually have a dminant language and then yu try t use that sund system fr the ther language. which is why yu end up having an accent." he said.

While 'pa' and 'ba' sunds exist in bth English and Spanish, hw thse sunds are prduced and perceived in the tw languages varies slightly.
