A hundred potential risks were listed on the left side of his notebook. On the other side, there were 100 solutions, some of which were related to the use of his prosthetics假肢.Pan Junfan, 40, knew what he had signed up for.

Pan's challenge was originally the Ultra Gobi, a 400-kilometer nonstop, self-navigating race. Due to the ongoing COVIEM9 pandemic, it was canceled. Yet Pan contacted the races organizers and then undertook a solo challenge on Sept 9.

Beginning from the “Mars Camp” in Qinghai Province, the ultra-extreme course was expanded to 513 km over sand dunes, dry valleys, ©tony plateaus and snowy mountains, finishing in Guazhou, Gansu Province. The journey, as Pan described, is “eyes on heaven, feet in hell”. Apart from facing extreme temperatures and varied terrains, Pan, carrying the bare minimum of equipment he would need, also battled sleep deprivation, hypothermia and hallucinations during the journey.

After running for 208 hours 35 minutes, Pan managed to cross the finish line in Guazhou on Sept 18. With his first 102 km clocking 26 hours and 3 minutes, he broke the record set by a Spanish amputee athlete in last year's 101 km race that went from Italy to France. "I hope that by completing the challenge I can inspire people and tell them that life has limitless possibilities and not to stop trying  Pan told China Daily.

Pan has been challenging himself since he lost his right leg in a car accident in 2015. Now, he is back and planning his next challenge - swimming and sailing across the Taiwan Straits. "Life's meaning is to explore the unknown,  he told China Daily.

The way people purchase clothes has fundamentally changed in response to the “fast fashion" ,the result of mass-market retailers 零售商increasing the production of inexpensive fashion lines to meet the demands of quickly changing trends. It is not uncommon for retailers to introduce new products multiple times in a single week to stay on trend. This may seem like a good thing at first glance, but it is causing more problems than it is solving.

Workers in factories in underdeveloped areas face mistreatment, including poor working - conditions, low wages and forced overtime. So before making a deal, ask retailers questions such as where products are made and how many people work there. Watch for warning signs and use your judgment if something doesn't feel right.

Another reason to rethink about the trend has something to do with the impact on our rivers, lakes and oceans. For instance, in some African and Asian areas, chemical pollutants are released into waterways every time those clothes are washed. What can be done is as simple as buying from brands known for their preference for using organic materials because they are trying not to add to the pollution.

Besides, people don't keep clothes as long as they used to, and the rate of production to keep up has resulted in tons of waste. It's easy to see at manufacturing 生产sites the massive wastes. Even holding giant sales or rewarding customers for bringing in second-hand clothes is not enough.

Only with enough customers saying "No" to fast fashion can we work toward a better future.

    28. Which is a feature of fast fashion?

    A. Being eco-friendly. B. Guaranteed quality.

    C. Affordable prices. D. Setting new trends.

    29. How does the author develop the third paragraph?

    A. By giving definition. B. By making an assumption.

    C. By offering data. D. By giving an example.

    30. What should customers do before purchasing clothes?

    A. Bring their used clothes for donations.  B. Ask manufacturers certain questions,

    C. Weigh possible environmental effects.  D. Examine the quality of materials used.

    31. What is the text mainly about ?

    A. Mass-market retailers are increasing.

    B. Fast fashion brings about troubles.

    C. Customers can change markets.

    D. Fashion Industry has an impact on economy.

    D

Hundreds of people die at sea every year due to ship and airplane accidents. Emergency teams have little time to rescue those in the water because the probability of finding a person alive fall dramatically after six hours. Beyond tides and challenging weather conditions, unsteady coastal currents often make search and rescue operations extremely difficult.

New insight into coastal flows gained by an international research team led by George Haller, Professor of Nonlinear Dynamics动力学at ETH Zurich, promises to enhance the search and rescue techniques currently in use. Using- tools from dynamical systems theory and ocean data, the team has developed an algorithm 算法to predict where objects and people floating in water will go. "Our work has a clear potential to save lives,” says Mattia Serra, the first author of a study recently published in Nature Communications.

In today's rescue operations at sea, complicated models o£ ocean dynamics and weather forecasting are used to predict the path of floating objects. For fast-changing coastal waters, however, such predictions are often inaccurate due to uncertain boundaries and missing data. As a result, a search may be launched in the wrong location, causing a loss of precious time.

Haller's research team obtained mathematical results predicting that objects floating on the ocean's surface should gather along a few special curves 曲线which they call TRansient Attracting Profiles TRAPs. These curves can't be seen with our eyes but can be tracked from instant ocean surface current data using recent mathematical methods developed by the ETH team. This enables quick and precise planning of search paths that are less sensitive to uncertainties in the time and place of the accident.

In cooperation with a team from MIT, the ETH team tested their new, TRAP-based search algorithm in two separate ocean experiments near Martha's Vineyard, which is on the northeastern coast of the United States. Working from the same real-time data available to the Coast Guard, the team successfully identified TRAPs in the region in real time. They found that buoys and manikins 浮标和人体模型thrown in the water indeed quickly gathered along these emerging curves. "Of several competing approaches tested in this project, this was the only algorithm that consistently found the right location, says Haller.

“Our results are rapidly obtained, easy to interpret and cheap to perform,” points out Serra. Haller stresses ”Our hope is that this method will become a standard part of the tool kit of coast guards everywhere.”

    32. In a search and rescue operation,                                .

    A. changing currents present a challenge

    B. the use of dynamics leads to the wrong location

    C. weather conditions are a determining factor

    D. the survival rate drops to almost zero after six hours

33, What is the distinct feature of the new algorithm?

    A. It relies on ocean dynamics.

    B. It stops the uncertainties of the accident.

    C. It figures out how tides change over time.

    D. It tracks the path of the curves.

    34. What does the underlined word “emerging" in Paragraph 5 probably mean                                        ?

    A. Carving B. Allocating C. Shrinking D. Appearing

    35. Paragraph 5 mainly talks about .

    A. the collection of data B. the testing of the algorithm

     C. the identification of the TRAPs D. the cooperation o£ two research teams

Do you love food? Whether you're a foodie or someone who just likes eating there is so much to choose from. We know that too much of the wrong kind of food can be bad for our health, but for some people having a food allergy means that eating certain things can actually be harmful. 36 . Yet in fact, food allergies are affecting more and more of us.

An allergy is caused by the immune 免疫的system fighting substances in the environment. 37   It means that people have to follow strict dietary restrictions, otherwise their lives may be put at risk. Allergy specialist Dr., Adam Fox says “if you look back over, say, 30 or 40 years... there are much more serious allergic problems around now than there were.”

38    Last year a _teenager died after suffering an allergic reaction from eating a piece of bread containing peanuts. This led to a call for better food-labeling laws.

Research has found that this problem is particularly affecting children. 39    Dr. Alexandra Santos from King's College London says "food allergy now affects about 7% of children in the UK and 9% of those in Australia, for example. Across Europe, 2% of adults have food allergies.

So what might be the cause? Dr. Santos says, the increase in allergies is not simply the effect of society becoming more aware of them and better at diagnosing them. 40   She adds that possible factors are pollution, dietary changes and less exposure to bacteria, which change how our immune systems respond. She points out that it's very common for migrants who move to another country to develop food allergies in their new location.

    A. It seems to be more environmental.

    B. Food allergies can cause life-threatening reactions.

    C. A food allergy can affect you at any age.

    D. We often hear about people having allergies to dairy products or to nuts.

    E. More and more of them are having allergic reactions to certain food.

    F. A lot of work is being done to try and find a cure, but that's not easy.

    G. Such cases may seem uncommon.
