With the scial media freely available, I’ve realized hw easy it is t becme a jealus cw. The truth is that hwever much I remind myself f the many wnderful things I have in my life, there are still mments when I lk at thse arund me and feel bitterly upset by their success.
It’s a hrrible thing t admit! In an ideal wrld, I’d never want t be jealus f anther persn’s achievements and I’d want t celebrate the successes f my friend. But smetimes it’s hard, even when we want t. But I dn’t want t live my life as a jealus cw, and I assume yu dn’t either.
It’s easier t celebrate ther peple’s wins if yu celebrate yur wn. Hw ften d we take the time t enjy ur success rather than instantly mve nt the next thing we want t achiever? Last year, I decided t write a bk. It was the nly prfessinal gal I set fr myself and, while it tired me ut, I gt there. But as sn as it was dne, I started planning my next gal—making the bk a success. As I saw ther peple publishing bks, I stpped celebrating and instead began t fear that mine wuldn’t cmpete.
When I tld a friend hw I was feeling, she reminded me hw much easier it is t clap fr smene else when we als clap fr urselves. S, I tk myself ut fr lunch, rdered a glass f wine and wrte myself a cngratulatins card. When I saw all thse ther bks being written n my scial media, I felt prud f each and every ne f us wh had battled t the end f the wrd cunt.
The ther trick fr celebrating ther peple’s success is t realize that there is n limit n success. We can make mre, which means that while it might seem as if thers have everything and we have nthing, the reality is that life turns quickly and ur luck culd change at any time. If thers have achieved thse things, we can t. When we celebrate thers, we’re acknwledging their achievements but als cheering fr urselves as well as fr ur hpes and dreams and ur belief that we can make them happen. And hpefully when we d, thse peple will cheer fr us t.
( )24. What can we infer frm Paragraph 1?
    A. Scial media is the surce f the authr’s jealusy.
    B. Frequent successes n scial media encurage envy.
    C. It is a pleasure t face thers’ successes n scial media.
    D. Peple tend t be crazy abut immediate success nline.
( )25. As far as the authr is cncerned, what shuld we d after achieve success?
    A. Appreciate what’s been dne.B. Shw it ff n scial media.
    C. Reflect n gains and lsses.D. Wait fr thers’ cngratulatins.
    ( )26. One f the keys t remving jealusy lies in _______________________.
    A. pursuing thse achievable gals.B. devting yurself t the next gal.
    C. admitting persnal incmpetence.D. changing yur attitude t success.
( )27. What is the best title fr the passage?
    A. I’m s happy fr us!B. What a cnsiderate friend!
    C. I dn’t care abut it!D. Hw selfless yu can be!
    C
The universe likes t be shy abut its age,but astrnmers believe they have a pretty gd idea f the range.Currently, the mst widely accepted age fr the universe is arund 13.8 billin years, but determining the age , everything, is n easy feat(功绩). Nw, new studies have investigated(调查) the questin using different methds—and they've cme up with tw different answers, separated by mre than a billin years.
Because the universe is expanding at an accelerating pace, the further away an bject is, the faster it appears t be mving away frm us. This is expressed as the Hubble cnstant(哈勃常数), and it's a key factr in figuring ut the age f the universe. After all, if we can determine hw fast bjects mving away frm us, we can rewind(倒带) that prcess t its beginning—the Big Bang. Researchers frm the University f Oregn set ut t map the distance t dzens f galaxies The team calculated that the universe is nly 12.6 billin years ld-that, yu might ntice is much yunger than the 13.8 years usually stated.
In the secnd study, the methd f figuring ut the age f the universe is by mapping the ldest light we can detect. We are restring(修复) the ‘baby pht’ f the universe t its riginal cnditin, remving the wear and tear f time and space that distrted(扭曲) the image, says Neelima Sehgal, c-authr n the study. Only by seeing this sharper baby pht r image f the universe can we mre fully understand hw ur universe was brn. In ding s, the researcher determined that the universe is 13.8 billin years ld-in agreement with the accepted age.
The real prblem thugh, is that the studies disagree s wildly with each ther, t the tune f a billin years. But they are nt the nly nes-the battle lines are cmmnly drawn by the methds used. Obviusly, mre research is heeded t determine where the truth lies.
( )28. What d we knw abut the universe frm the first tw paragraphs?
    A. It desn't exist lng.B. It becmes larger.
    C. It runs away.D. It causes the Big Bang.
( )29. What makes the researchers in the first study think the universe is much yunger?
    A. The speed f mving bjects.B. The number f galaxies.
    C. The prcess f the universe evlutin.D. The distance t ther bjects.
( )30. Hw des Neelima Sehgal explain their methd in the secnd study?
    A. By referring t a similar thing.B. By using hard scientific data.
    C. By intrducing a new cncept.D. By quting an expert's wrds.
( )31. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Whse methd is better?B. Which result can yu believe?
    C. Hw ld is the universe?D. Why is the universe s ld?

“What were they thinking?” Like mst parents f teens, I ask myself this questin n a regular basis in regard t the decisins my kids make. Fr the mst part, their bad decisins include unhealthy fd chices r watching Netflix instead f ding their hmewrk. It’s usually nt a big deal unless they start thrwing up because they ate smething that they knew wuld make them sick r they have rush arund t turn in their schlwrk n time because they wasted six hurs watching “Stranger Things”. But fr many adlescents, their bad decisins have much mre terrible cnsequences.
Scientists have been trying t unlck the secrets f the adlescent brain fr years. Nw new research shws that adlescent brains g thrugh structural changes that may affect their ability t make sund decisins.
Changes in the adlescent brain at this stage f develpment are respnsible fr several unpredictable behavirs. Fr example, the adlescent brain’s hunger fr the “feel gd” chemical, dpamine, drives yung peple t push bundaries and take risks. These structural brain differences may als be respnsible fr the fact that teens and yung adults tend t ver-identify with thers and fcus heavily n every setback(挫折). Add t these factrs such as scial media and sleep prblems and it’s n wnder that when adlescents are presented with imprtant decisin-making pprtunities, nrmal scial tabs(禁忌) disappear and negative actins arise.
With a better understanding f adlescent brains, researchers are learning ways t use scial media t cnnect teens with thers s they can find help quickly when they need it. There has als been a much bigger push in recent years t talk abut mental health in schl as part f health curriculum(课程表). Just as kids learn abut the imprtance f taking care f their physical health, they can als begin t understand things that might be affecting their emtinal well-being.
The adlescent years are imprtant. The mre we knw abut adlescent brains, the better equipped we will be t help guide them thrugh thse cnfusing years and the prblems they may face.
    ( )32. What d we knw frm paragraph 1?

    C. It’s necessary fr parents t help teens make decisins.
    D. Teens’ bad decisins can lead t unpleasant results.
( )33. What may result frm changes in the adlescent brains?
    A. Teens thinking t much abut their failures.
    B. Teens lacking a sense f respnsibility.
    C. Teens’ addictin t scial media.
    D. Teens’ sleep prblems.
( )34. Why d researchers try t understand the adlescent brain?
    A. T design accessible health curriculum.
    B. T help imprve teens’ emtinal well-being.
    C. T make clear teens’ decisin-making prcess.
    D. T explre things affecting teens’ brain develpment.
( )35. What might be the best title fr the text?
    A. What were yur adlescent years like?
    B. Hw d adlescent brains relate t teens’ decisins?
    C. Hw can teens avid lsing decisin-making pprtunities?
    D. Why shuld we allw teens t make their wn decisins?

I wuld like t extend a heartfelt invitatin t yu. Since the Dragn Bat Festival is arund the crner, I sincerely invite yu t cme t China.
The Dragn Bat Festival, ne f the traditinal festivals in ur natin, is set n the fifth day f May n the lunar calendar. It is said that the festival is in hnr f the patritic pet Qu Yuan in the very beginning. Fr thusands f years, the festival has been marked by eating zngzi made f sticky rice and racing dragn bats. (Since 2008, ur gvernment has viewed it as a legal hliday t develp and expand ur traditinal culture.)
I’d appreciate it if yu culd write me back sn and accept my invitatin. I’m lking frward t yur reply.
    Yurs, Li Hua

“I knw hw yu feel,”Mrs. Lim said gently, as if she culd read Jnah’s mind. “Once I was mving t a new place, alne and miserable.”Mrs. Lim reminisced. Jnah listened attentively and intently.“But then, ne f my classmates brke her leg and needed smene t make up fr the lst classes. With the final exam appraching, hwever, n ne was willing t help. S, I stepped in, ffering my ntes and helping her review. Our friendship thus frmed, matured and grew fully fledged.” Jnah listened with reverent awe.“S, Jnah, find smene wh needs help, and yur flwer f friendship will surely blssm!”
In the hallway utside the library, a by frm Jnah’s class was picking up smething n the flr. Fully enlightened by Mrs. Lim’s advice, Jnah flew ut, squatted dwn and helped the by pick up his scattering handuts. As the tw bys exchanged their names, their cnversatin flew int ther aspects f their life. Almst unbelievably, they lived in the same blck, shared the same hckey cach and went t the same cell class! The mre the tw bys hung ut, the better they were acquainted, and the wider Jnah’s wrld became. See what a tremendus magic a simple suggestin can wrk!

“I knw hw yu feel.”Mrs. Lim said gently, as if she culd read Jnah’s mind. Jnah was surprised as he had nt expected a ttal stranger t sense his lneliness. Mrs. Lim added,“I can see it in yur face. Yu lk lnely.”Jnah sighed, nt knwing what t d next.“Just say hell t smene tday,” she encuraged, “II prmise they’ll respnd. Once yu’ve made the first mve, it just gets easier.”Mrs. Lim bviusly did nt understand hw challenging that was ging t be fr him, Jnah thught. But still he appreciated the advice and thanked her befre making his way ut f the library.
In the hallway utside the library, a by frm Jnah’s class was picking up smething n the flr. Pens, pencils, and highlighters had drpped ut f his pencil case. Fighting the urge t just walk away, Jnah leaned dwn and picked up a few pens. Then, he remembered what Mrs. Lim had advised him. “Hell, I’m Jnah. Let me help yu,”he ffered. The by lked up at him.“Thank yu. My name is Ruben.”Victry at last, Jnah thught, feeling prud f himself.

OK, everyne, I’d just like t say a few wrds abut reading — smething yu’re ging t be ding a lt here. I’ll give yu yur reading list fr this curse. Yur ther tutrs will d the same. There’ll be 30 r s bks n each list, but that desn’t mean yu have t read every page f every bk. There are three r fur key bks at the tp f each list. We recmmend that yu read the entire bk, but the thers are mainly fr reference. That’s t say, there’ll be ne r tw chapters in them that are relevant t a particular essay r piece f wrk.
S, mst imprtantly, when I give yu the list, please dn’t g ut t the nearest bkshp and buy them all. All these bks are available in the library. Of curse, sme may be brrwed when yu want them. Yu’ll prbably want t buy the mre imprtant nes. If yu want t buy a bk, my advice is t check nline bksellers first and see if yu can pick up a secnd-hand cpy r at least a cheaper cpy. They als sell secnd-hand bks in the main university bkshp. Yu might find what yu’re lking fr.
