A wrld withut time r number
The Piraha are an Amaznian tribe (部落) f hunter-gatherers wh live deep in the
Brazilian rainfrest. The tribe has kept their culture undamaged fr centuries, althugh there
are nw nly arund 200 left. The Piraha, wh cmmunicate mainly thrugh hums and whistles,
have interested ethnlgists (人种学者) fr years, mainly because they have almst n wrds
fr numbers. They use nly three wrds t cunt: ne, tw, and many.
We knw abut the Piraha thanks t an ex-hippy, Dan Everett, nw a prfessr f
language, wh spent seven years with the tribe in the 1970s and 1980s. Everett discvered a
wrld withut numbers, withut time, withut wrds fr clrs and withut a past tense. Their
language, he fund, was nt just simple grammatically; it nly had several sunds and they
were different between the men and wmen. Fr the men, it has just eight cnsnants (辅音) in
the wrds and three vwels (元音); fr the wmen, wh have the smallest number f speech
sunds in the wrld, it has seven cnsnants and three vwels. T peple frm ther places, the
language sunds mre like humming than speech. The Piraha can als whistle their language,
which is hw men cmmunicate when hunting.
The Piraha can‟t write, have little cmmn memry, and n idea f decrative art. In 1980
Everett tried t teach them t cunt: he explained basic numbers t a grup wh wanted t
    learn the skills needed t trade with ther tribes. After eight mnths, nt ne culd cunt t ten;
even ne plus ne was beynd them. The experiment seemed t supprt Everett‟s thery: the
tribe just culdn‟t understand the meaning f number.
The Piraha‟s inability t cunt is imprtant because it desn‟t seem t supprt Nam
Chmsky‟s famus Thery f Universal Grammar, which hlds that the human mind has a
natural ability fr language, and that all languages share a basic rule structure, which help
children t understand ideas such as number. One f Chmsky‟s cwrkers has recently gne
n an expeditin with Everett t study the tribe. We d nt yet knw if he will change his
    thery after visiting the Piraha
    27. The Piraha have interested ethnlgists fr years mainly because ______.
    A. their culture is kept undamaged
    B. they are a tribe f hunter-gatherers
    C. they have almst n wrds fr numbers
    D. they live deep in the Brazilian rainfrest
    28. What‟s the main idea f Paragraph 2?
    A. What the Piraha‟s language is like.
    B. Everett‟s experiment with the Piraha.
    C. Hw Everett fund the Piraha‟s language.
    D. Different sunds between the men and wmen.
    29. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
    A. The Piraha have a natural ability fr language.
    B. The Piraha‟s children understand numbers well.
    C. Nam Chmsky wn‟t change his thery fr sure.
    D. Nt all languages seem t share a basic rule structure.

Fr many years dctrs have warned us abut the dangers f stress (压力) and have given
advice abut hw t cut dwn ur stress levels. Everyne agrees that lng-term stress, fr

„gd stress‟, that is situatins with shrt-term r lw stress. The stress usually makes us react

these situatins, the stress damages (损害) the cells in ur bdy r brain and they start t break
dwn. But then the cells‟ wn repair system repairs the damaged cells and remves harmful
things that can gradually cause disease. In fact, the bdy‟s respnse is greater than is needed t
repair the damage, s it actually makes the cells strnger than they were befre.
„As the bdy gets lder, this self-repair system f the cells starts t slw dwn‟, says Dr
Kyriazis. The best way t keep the prcess wrking efficiently is t „exercise‟ it. This means
having a certain amunt f stress in ur lives. Other stressful activities that Kyriazis
recmmends as being gd stress include packing yur suitcase in a hurry t reach the airprt
n time r shpping fr a dinner party during yur lunch break.
S next time yur bss tells yu that she wants t see that reprt finished and n her desk
in 45 minutes, dn‟t feel nervus, just think f it as „gd stress‟ which will have benefits fr
    yur lng-term health.
    30. Mst peple agree that lng-term stress ______.
    A. shuldn't be avided
    B. is nt gd fr ur health
    C. can prtect us frm illnesses
    D. can cut dwn ur stress levels

    A. decides B. disagrees C. refuses D. suggests
    32. Accrding t Dr Kyriazis, ______ can be called as „gd stress‟.
    A. running t catch a bus
    B. being stuck in a traffic jam
    C. taking big exams every day
    D. lking after smene seriusly ill
    33. What culd be the best title fr the passage?
