四、阅读理解 阅读短文,根据短文内容选择最佳答案。(本大题24分,每小题2分)
A
Plants are very important living things. Life could not go if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. So animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.
If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants.
Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit.
Most non-flowering plants don't grow from seeds. They grow from spores. Spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as the seeds. When these spores fall on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.
( )1.What fact does the passage lead you to believe?
A.Of all living things, animals are most important
B.spores are seeds
C.All fruits of flowering plants have seeds
D.Without plants, man will die out
( )2.The paragraph following the passage will be about________.

B.how sports grow into new plants
C.why some plants have no seeds
D.why non-flowering plants are more important than flowering plants
( )3.This passage is most likely to be taken from________.
A.a story book

It's important to learn about protecting our environment. Here is a 5R rule for us:
Reduce
If you want to reduce waste, you should use things wisely. Millions of trees are being cut down to make paper. If everyone uses a little paper carelessly and throw it out, soon we would not have any trees left.Other things are also being wasted, and people don't know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is necessary to reduce the waste.
Reuse
You should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them out. Give your clothes you do not use or the ones which are too small to the poor. With a family, you may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.
Recycle
Bottles, cans and paper can easily be recycled. By doing so, we save lots of time and money. For example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat (压平) and melted (融化) and the melted things are made for new coke cans.
Recover
When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten(腐烂的)apples. You have two choices: one is to throw the whole apple away, or you could cut off the rotten parts and eat the good parts. In this way, you are recovering the eatable parts of food.
Repair
If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it instead of throwing it away. If you want to change for better ones, It is better for you to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use them after doing some repair. It is true that North America is a "throw-away" society. But the time has come to change our way of life so that we can protect our environment. Every one of us should try our best.
( )4. _____ can be recycled.
A. Only hard things
B. Many things
C. Few soft things
D. All things
( )5.The "recover" rule mainly requires us _____.
A. to throw waste things away
B. to cover waste things with earth
C. to get back the useful parts
D. to throw the whole things away
( )6.We can infer (推断) that the writer of this passage may live in _____.
A. China
B. Japan
C. Australia
D. America

Everyone gets sick of hearing.“Put on your seat belt!”But it’s good advice.People who wear seat belts are 45 percent less likely to be killed while riding in the front seat of a car.
The US government wants more seat belt laws.It says children aged 4 to 15 are often killed in car accidents. In 2005,there were 1,627 children aged 4 to 15 killed in car accidents.More than 1,000 of those children were not wearing seat belts. If they had been wearing seat belts,500 of those children could be alive today.
These children are too old to be in car seats, but they often sit in the back seat.Seat belt laws in many states, including Wisconsin, only require people in the front seat to wear seat belts.Children who aren’t wearing seat belts can be thrown from the car.The risk of dying in an accident is three times greater if the person is thrown from the car.
New laws could require children aged 4 to 8 to be in booster seats in the car.Booster seats help seat belts fit children properly.Right now, only 5 percent of children aged 4 to 8 are seated in booster seats.
While parents have the choice of whether wearing seat belts or not, children are too young to make that choice.Even if you decide not to wear a seat belt, make sure you children are in seat belts and car seats. It’s the law and it will save their lives.

How long are you willing to wait for a webpage to open before you start to lose your patience? Half a minute? A few seconds?
Google engineers have discovered that even 400 milliseconds―as short as the blink of an eye―is too long for most Internet users.
A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. People hardly notice such a small time difference, but it does cause them to stop searching, reported The New York Times.
“Of course you don’t like to wait,” said Arvind Jain, a Google engineer. “Every millisecond matters.”
Nowadays, millions of smart-phones and computers are constantly gathering and sending out information. With so many people downloading maps, sports videos, news and restaurant recommendations, you can get digital “traffic jams”. Users are expecting faster and faster service.
Achieving a higher speed has always been part of the history of the Internet.
In the 1990s, when the World Wide Web first started to become popular, people called it the “World Wide Wait”. But engineers managed to fight the problem with new inventions. They improved software so it would work more smoothly; they made computer servers all around the world nearer to users; all these increased speeds.
Now we can enjoy much faster Internet. Major search engines(引擎) such as Google and Microsoft’s Bing usually find search results in less than a second. But they will need to keep fighting to keep up with the developing needs of Internet users.
( )10.What does the report of The New York Times indicate (暗示)?
A. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second.
B. A millisecond has nothing to do with the Internet speed.
C. A millisecond really makes a difference to the Internet users.
D. 400 milliseconds is not so long for most Internet users.
( )11.How does the writer feel about the future of the Internet speed?
A.Excited
B.Interested
C.Confident
D.Discouraged
( )12.What can be the best title of this passage?
A.Don’t make me “www.wait “.
B.Search engines work faster
C.Traffic jams keep us waiting
D.The World Wide Web becomes popular

Delia was a young pianist. Her husband Joe was a talented young painter. They lived in a small flat in New York.
Each of them was taking lessons - Joe with a famous art teacher, and Delia with a great pianist from Germany. They were the best teachers, so lessons were expensive, more than they could really afford, but …when you love your art, nothing’s too much.
But soon, the money began to run out and they couldn’t afford the lessons any more.
Then one day Delia came home and told Joe that she had met a man. The man s daughter, Sally, wanted to learn the piano — and he was going to pay her $50 an hour.
“Delia,” Joe said, “I’d be much happier if you kept up your lessons. ” Delia said that it didn’t matter. She said, “When I’ve made some money, I’ll start again. When you love your art, nothing’s too much.”
A few days later, Joe came home and proudly took $200 from his pocket. “I met a man from Vermont,” he said, “who bought one of my paintings. And he wants to buy more!”
Then, one day, Joe came home and saw that Delia’s hand was burned. He asked her what had happened. “Oh,” said Delia. “My student, Sally, asked me to pour some coffee for her. So I did - and I dropped the coffee and burned my hand.”
Joe sat down and told Delia to sit down too. “Delia, what have you been doing the last two weeks?” he asked. She took a deep breath and started to cry. “Oh Joe — I couldn’t get any students so I got a job in a coffee shop. And today I burned my hand with hot water. So I can’t work any more. I’m sorry,Joe - but we’ll still have money from the man in Vermont, won’t we?”
Joe looked at her. “There’s no man in Vermont,” he said. “I haven’t sold any paintings. I’ve been working in a drugstore (药店),and today someone came from the coffee shop to buy cream for a woman who’d burned her hand. So when I saw you — well,I guessed.”
They both laughed. “So we’ve told each other lies,” said Joe. “But when you love your art ..,”
Delia put her fingers to his lips (嘴唇). “No, Joe,” she said, “just ‘When you love ...’”

Trees are one of the oldest citizens (公民) of our earth. Just like us, trees change a lot as when they grow. At 1to 3 years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns(刺) to tell animals not to go near. Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.
When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very fast and become strong enough to face challenges in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit. It is not until the trees are 20 to 25 years old that they become real adults. The trees reach their largest sizes. Adult trees give us many things such as oxygen(氧气) and natural beauty. If we give them good care, they will go on to live healthily for many years. In many ways, the life of trees is like our own life experience. So, enjoy every minute of the life of the trees because they are very helpful to the environment.
