    Elizabeth Freeman was brn abut 1742 t African American parents wh were slaves. At the age f six mnths she was acquired, alng with her sister, by Jhn Ashley, a wealthy Massachusetts slavehlder. She became knwn as “Mumbet” r “Mum Bett”.
    Fr nearly 30 years Mumbet served the Ashley family. One day, Ashley’s wife tried t strike Mumbet’s sister with a spade. Mumbet prtected her sister and tk the blw instead. Furius, she left the huse and refused t cme back. When the Ashleys tried t make her return, Mumbet cnsulted a lawyer, Thedre Sedgewick. With his help, Mumbet sued (起诉) fr her freedm.
    While serving the Ashleys, Mumbet had listened t many discussins f the new Massachusetts cnstitutin. If the cnstitutin said that all peple were free and equal, then she
