Period 1 Starting out and Understanding ideas

In the part of starting out, reading the map, presenting three great explores’ sailing routes around the world, will help the students activate the topic of Unit 5. By watching the video in Activity 2, students can learn about scientific adventure across China of a Chinese geographer called Xu Xiake. The contents of the textbook are conducive to stimulating students' curiosity of exploration and cultivating the spirit of exploration
In the section of reading, the text centers on the question whether climbing Qomolangma is worth risks.The leading-in activity before reading activates students' existing knowledge about Qomolangma, which helps students become familiar with the topic of the reading passage. After getting the author’s purpose writing and more details, the student will think about and valuate the benefits and risks of adventure activities.
1. Guide the students to learn about great adventure activities and share some adventure experiences.
2. Lead the students to get the main idea and target information by skimming or scanning.
3. Help the students clarify the author's writing purpose, understand the structure of the text and the logic of the text.
4. Guide the students to evaluate the significance of exploration and express their own ideas on exploration

2. Guide the students to enhance their understanding of the writing intention and the logic of the passage.
3. Lead the students to talk about adventure experiences and discuss the benefits they can bring.
Step 1 Starting out
Activity 1
① Look at the world map and learn about three great explores’ sailing routes around the world.
② Based on the given information, match the routes to the three explorers.
Activity 2 Watch the video and answer the questions.
① After watching the video, say what kind of difficulties Xu Xiake met.
② Invite some students to share information about the Chinese geographer.
Step 2 Before reading

① Track the first climbers to reach the top of Mt Qomolangma.
② Think about the reasons why climbers need many camps along the route.
Step 3 While reading
Activity 2 Read through the text quickly and answer the following the questions.
① What challenges are the climbers of Mt Qomolangma faced with?
② Why did George Mallory choose to climb Mt Qomolangma?
③ What are “Type T” personalities according to the text?
Activity 3 Choose the author’s purpose in writing passage.
① To encourage people to climb Qomolangma if fully prepared, as risks bring many benefits.
② To remind people to balance the benefits and risks before deciding to climb Qomolangma.
③ To suggest that people stop taking risks and climbing Qomolangma, as the risks outweigh the benefits.
