Each September in the UK, thousands of new students move t0 new cities to start their university life with “freshers’ week”. For the new students, they can find their way around and get to know their new student life. I talked to two freshers about their experiences, which may be helpful to you.
John, Sheffield University
When my parents left, I felt a bit sad and lonely, but it didn’t take long for Sarah to knock on the door and say hello. The next day I made my choices about the courses I was going to study. Then I went over to the Student Union. The Student Union is great because there were lots of facilities (设施), such as a shop, a laundry and a job-shop. In fact, that’s where I found a part-time job in the university restaurant.
Gemma, Southampton University
Freshers’ week was so exciting. In the beginning, I should make some choices about the courses. And I wanted to join all the student clubs, but in the end, I joined the dance club, hillwalking club and surfing club. I probably should have joined just one or two clubs, as now I find I don’t have enough time. The best for me was the freshers’ parties. I had a great time. I suppose I went a bit crazy and spent a lot of money!
As for me, when I started university, I was lucky enough to meet my friend Cath on the first night of freshers' week. And we decided to choose the same courses... Who would have thought back then that over twenty years later I would still be friends with Cath on Facebook!

Last fall, my classmates and I visited Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary, which lies in the mountains of Northern Thailand. Although our stay was short, it turned out to be the most unforgettable experience of our holiday.
As soon as we arrived there, we headed to the base (基地) to learn about the elephants in the village. The eldest, Too Mch, had once spent much of her life giving tourists rides with a heavy seat on her back. Her daughter, Mac Doom, and grandsons, Dodo and Gen Thong had also spent years doing hard work for tourists. It broke our hearts to hear their sad stories.
Early the next morning, we saw Too Mch and Mac Doom walking in the forest and Dodo playing by the river. Seeing them free was a heartwarming experience. Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary was founded in 1989, with the purpose of protecting the elephants in the wild. And since then, this place hasn’t offered elephant rides or elephant performances any longer. Instead, it tries to educate visitors about these amazing animals.
But we did more than just get to know the elephants. We also cooked and ate together with our host family, learned about the language of the local people, and taught English to the children in the village. In doing these activities, we were able to experience the local customs and culture. By providing such chances for visitors, the place gives back to the village by helping the villagers make more money, It’s a win-win situation.
It you want to see elephants in their natural environment, Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary is the nice place to go. It will be an experience you won’t forget.
34. In 1989, Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary was founded to _________.

D. teaching English to the people in the village
36. The passage is probably taken from the _______ part of a website.
A. News B. travel C. sports D. business

A company called Neuralink has shared a video, which appears to show a monkey playing a video game. That’s quite unusual, but what makes the video even stranger is that the monkey is playing the video game with just its mind.
The monkey in the video is called Pager, and he has two of Neuralink’s special “Link” devices (装置) inside his head.
At first, ___A___. Scientists gave Pager a banana when he played the game with a joystick. Soon Pager was able to play well in order to get more. As Pager played, the “Link” devices sent out information about the signals of his brain (大脑).
Then, they used computers to match the signals of Pager’s brain with the movements that his hands were doing. The work was not easy, and the scientists depended on artificial intelligence (Al) to help them record Pager’s brain signals (信号).
The final step was to have a computer make moves in the video game. Pager didn’t need to use the joystick to play the game. If he thought about moving the joystick up, the computer would send an “up” signal to the video game.
Now Neuralink mainly works on animals and video games, but there’s a very “serious purpose” behind it. Neuralink wants to help the people who have lost the ability to move their bodies. When people are paralyzed (瘫痪的),it’s often because the brain has lost the ability to send signals to certain parts of the body.
Mr. Musk says that in the near future Neuralink hopes to allow a paralyzed person to use a smartphone just by thinking. He believes its system will be able to send this information in a different way, allowing paralyzed people to use their arms or legs again.
37. Which of the following can be put in the blank “___A___” in Paragraph 3?
A. Pager was interested in the video game
B. Pager was able to use the joystick well
C. Pager was taught to play a video game
D. Pager was given a joystick to get bananas
38. In the last step, the “Link” devices ______.
A. taught Pager how to play the video game
B. had a computer make moves to play the game
C. depended on AI to record Pager’s brain signals
D. sent out signals to help Pager move the joystick
39. Neuralink’s “serious purpose” is to allow _____.
A. animals to send signals of danger
B. the paralyzed to use their bodies again
C. a paralyzed person to own a smartphone
D. animals to play video games with their minds
40. The best title of this passage is _____.
