How soon will it be before robots become so intelligent that will be able to do things, such as teaching languages or looking after patients in hospital? Some experts believe this will happen within twenty years while others disagree.
One London company,UAS(Universal Automated Systems) has already developed machines that can be used as “home helps” for old people unable to look after themselves and who are living on their own or in special homes. These machines can now do such things as cooking eggs and cleaning the floor, and the company says that future models still accept simple voice instructions and be controlled by a “brain” that is the equivalent(相当) of the latest IBM microcomputer. The director of UAS,Mr Henry Jeffries, believes that in the next five to ten years companies will have developed even more sophisticated(复杂的)robots for use in industry.By this time,it is likely that they will also have begun to sell new forms of these machines into ordinary homes.Robots could do a wide range of household tasks, such as preparing meals, washing dishes, cleaning the house and so on.By then, the price of such machines may have come down to as little as $1,000.
But Dr Sandra Lomax, who has done research into artificial intelligence at Sussex University and MIT(Massachusetts Intelligence of Technology) believes we have a long way to go before we can develop truly intelligent machines.
“Preparing an omelette(煎蛋)may seem easy enough. But suppose one of the eggs has gone bad, even the most ‘intelligent’ robot would probably still use it.If something slightly unusual needs doing—something that requires even a little bit of ordinary human imagination,a robot is useless. They need programming for even the simplest of tasks and are not able to learn from experience. And teaching a robot how to recognize a bad egg is far more difficult than teaching it to prepare the omelette the egg goes into,”she says.

Your house may have an effect on your figure.Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off.You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights.Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places — and so more likely to eat lots of food.If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors.Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room.Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint,go blue.
Don’t forget the clock — or the radio.People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里)per meal than those who rush through their meals.Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it,actually sit down to eat.If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes.Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat.We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
29.The text is especially helpful for those who care about .
A.their home comforts
B.their body shape
C.house buying
D.healthy diets
30.A home environment in blue can help people .
A.digest food better
B.reduce food intake
C.burn more calories
D.regain their appetites
31.What are people advised to do at mealtimes?
A.Eat quickly.
B.Play fast music.
C.Use smaller spoons.
D.Turn down the lights.
32.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Is Your House Making You Fat?
B.Ways of Serving Dinner
C.Effects of Self-Consciousness
D.Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?
答案:A
Is Your House Making You Fat?

How to Eat Slowly to Avoid Overeating
Eating slowly can help you to better understand your real hunger signals and recognize reasons for faster eating, such as emotions or simply liking the taste of food. However, eating slowly is not a decision that you make suddenly. 36
Adjust your mind.Do not even attempt to acquire the habit of eating slowly before you’re mentally ready.Relax and use your imagination to create mental images that your brain will remember. As part of this mental process, imagine yourself lean and fit.
37 Eating slowly isn’t just about slowing down the chewing;it’s also about slowing down your food choices. As you pick out the processed food, replace it with healthy, unprocessed or less processed choices.
Always relax before you start eating.Take a few deep breaths through the nose, not through the mouth. As you do so,hold your breath briefly and exhale(呼出)slowly by the mouth. 38 In this way,you remove any risk of comfortable eating.
Drink a glass of water or a small bowl of soup before the main dishes. This will give you a sense of fullness.Be aware that not everyone advocates(提倡)drinking during a meal,as some people believe that this can remove the nutrients from your meal. 39
Spend at least 20 minutes on your meal. 40 Eat your last portion slowly,if you are still hungry after 20 minutes, because it means you are eating too fast!

Advanced Life in the Future
Sometimes I dream about life in the future. What will it be like?Perhaps some people will go to the moon for a holiday, and some scientists will live under the sea.Maybe we will have videophones in every home.We can have a medical examination or do some shopping without leaving our homes.
And I’m sure there will be more educational programs on the radio or TV,so perhaps some children won’t need to go to school every day. They’ll study at home.
No people like doing housework.Maybe in the future each family will have a robot.Every day we can tell the robot what to do — shopping, housework and so on.I believe the dream will come true some day.
