Text 10
Rose left school when she was seventeen years old and went to a college for a year to learn to type. She passed her examinations quite well and then went to look for work. She was still living with her parents. A lot of people were looking for typists at that time, so it was not difficult to find interesting work. Rose went to several offices, and then chose one of them. It was near her parents' house. She thought, “I will walk there every morning. I won't go by bus.” She went to the office again and said to the manager, “I want to work here but what will you pay me?” “We will pay you $27 now,” the manager answered, “and $30 in three months.” Rose thought for a few seconds before she answered. Then she said, “All right, then I'll start in three months' time.”
A
After returning from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. “The railway owes me 12 pounds,” she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office. “You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me 12 pounds.”
Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely. “I'll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”
The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn't have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child.“You look sunburnt,” he said to her.“Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”
“Yes,” she answered, shyly.“The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”
“That's fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can't swim a bit yet. Of course, she's only three ...”
“I'm four,” the child said proudly. “I'll be four and a half.”
Harry turned to the mother.“I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said. “But you didn't get one for your daughter, did you?”
“Er, well ...” the woman looked at the child. “I mean .., she hasn't started school yet. She's only four.”
“A fouryearold child must have a ticket, Madam. A child's return ticket from Jersey costs .., let me see ... 13.50 pounds. The law is the law, but since the mistake is mine ...”
The woman stood up, took the child's hand and left the office.
21.The woman was angry because ________.
A. she couldn't use the ticket for her round trip
B. she had to return home a day earlier than she had planned
C. she spent more money than she had expected
D. Harry had sold her a ticket to Jersey where there was no sailing
22.Harry started talking to the little girl ________.
A. because he was in trouble and did not know what to do
B. because he had a little girl about the same age as this girl
C. because he wanted to be friendly to the little girl who looked so nice
D. when he suddenly realized that he could find a way out from the little girl
答案与解析 A 短文中的这句“Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child.”
23.When Harry said,“The law is the law, but since the mistake was mine ...” he meant that ________.
A. they must follow it, even though the mistake was his
B. he had to be strict with the woman because of the law, although he didn't want to
C. the woman had to pay him 1.50 pounds and the railway would pay her for the hotel
D. she should pay 1.50 pounds, but he had made a mistake, she could go without paying
24.The woman left the office without saying anything because ________.
A. she wanted to go home and get money for the child's ticket
B. she was so angry that she didn't have anything to do with the young man
C. she was moved by Harry's kindness
D. she knew she would have to pay the railway if she insisted
B
Mr. Ma, a famous mental doctor from Beijing once said at an important meeting, “Now many young students can have problems with their minds. Some students become worried because they have to study very hard. Others have trouble getting on with people around them like their parents and classmates. Parents and teachers should care more about this problem.”
Then Mr. Ma gave some examples. One patient, a middle school student from Xi'an, was doing badly in his lessons. He thought his teachers and friends often laughed at him, and he became so nervous and worried. And one night he left his home without telling parents. Another student, a 14yearold schoolgirl from Shanghai, was very afraid of exams. While she was reading the exam paper, she couldn't think of anything to write.
A recent report from Jiefang Daily says about 18% of young students in Shanghai have mental problems. They often feel worried and unhappy. Unluckily, many of them won't go and ask for help. Some think they will look stupid if they go to see a doctor. Others won't talk about their secrets.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. Ma offered some good ideas to young people:
Talk to your parents or teachers often.
Take part in group activities.
Try to get on well with people around you.
Go to see a doctor if you often feel unhappy.

A. they don't want to tell their secrets to others
B. their parents are too busy to look after them
C. doctors can't help them with the problems
D. they can do with the problems themselves
Others won't talk about their secrets.

Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.
●Recite and repeat in conversation.
When you hear a person's name, repeat it. Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.
●Ask the other person to recite and repeat.
You can let other people help you remember their names. After you've been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you're making to learn their names.
●Admit you don't know.
Admitting that you can't remember someone's name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say “I'm working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?”.
●Use associations.
Link each person you meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note: “Vicki Cheng — tall, black hair.” To reinforce your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.
●Limit the number of new names you learn at one tine.
When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning first names. Last names can come later.
●Go early.
Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up on time. There're fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others — an automatic review for you.
32. How will most people feel when you try hard to remember their names?
A. They will be moved.
B. They will be annoyed.
C. They will be delighted.
D. They will be discouraged.
33. If you can't remember someone's name, you may ________.
A. tell him the truth
B. tell him a white lie
C. ask him for pity
D. ask others to help you
34. When you meet a group of people, it is better to remember ________.
A. all their names
B. a couple of names first
C. just their last names
D. as many names as possible
35. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Tips on an important social skill.
B. Importance of attending parties.
C. How to make use of associations.
D. How to recite and repeat names.
故选A项。

47.A 联系“... some of us wanted to go home. They said, ‘There is nothing ________ (fun)here.’”
48.A 联系下文“Since we have got wet already, why not just go on with our journey?”
50.D 由上一句中的bright and clear以及下文中的the air was fresh可推出天气晴朗,而晴朗的天气里天空应该是蓝色的。
52.A 从下文的“... floating sparsely in the ocean.”
54.D 联系上文的“You see,I knew that there would be no rain above the clouds.”以及下一句“While it may rain below the clouds, the sun is still there above them.”
联系下文“... whenever I have any difficulties in my life ...”
58.C “...联系空后whenever I have any difficulties in my life, I will remember ...”,此处应表示将来的情况。D项与in my life重复。
My name is Jack Richard. Many years ago when I was in South Africa, I visited a wildlife park __61__ (call) Tenbevady. I went with my two aunts and my sister by air. And as we were landing on the ground, we saw a vast area covered by trees. It was so exciting being in a place __62__ there were no modern buildings. We just had one guide, and there were six other people with us, and we __63__ (camp) in little tents for four days. We felt as though we were __64__ (complete) on our own, although we had the __65__ (secure) of having the guide with a gun. I felt happy to be there with all the animals around us. The guard took us out __66__ dawn and then again at dusk, because that's when we're most likely __67__ (see) the animals. We also went out at night once __68__ twice and that was really amazing, quite __69__ (frighten) though, because we could see all these little __70__ (eye) all around us, peering at us. We saw lions, elephants, giraffes, deer and everything. It was absolutely wonderful.
66.at at dawn“在黎明”,对应后面的at dusk。
67.to see be likely to do sth.

I am writing to tell you about the arguments on students of No.1 Senior High should go in for sports or not. More than half of the student think we should exercise every day because healthy is the most important. You can do nothing with poor health. Sports and exercise can make us be strong and energetic. But forty five percent of the students believed it the waste of time to take exercise. Also it is very tired. After having sports, we are too excited to get down to study. We may even get hurt on sports. And I think it is true that we should devote us to the lessons, and sports can help our brains relax and enable us to have a good sleep at night.

范文
Dear_Amy,_
I'm_sorry_you_have_difficulty_in_finding_a_job_in_China. It's common that women are not treated equally as men.
First, it is a tradition that girls' education is placed second to boys', as girls are believed to get married and leave the family sooner or later. Second, most important positions are intended for men only, thus leaving fewer chances in the career for women. It's generally considered that men are stronger and that women are more likely to give up their careers to care for children.
In my opinion, women should have equal chances as men. With hard work and determination, women can also make great achievements.
Yours,
Li_Hua
