    PERIOD 8: STUDY SKILLS
    Teaching Objectives
    T shw the students hw t find the main pints f a passage
    T help the students t guess the meaning and t generate mental pictures while reading
    T encurage the students t help thers t slves the prblems
    Teaching Prcedures
    STEP 1 Enjy yurselves!
    Get 8 pieces f paper that are abut the same size. Write 8 lng sentences n each. Divide the class int 8 grups clumn by clumn. D chain wrk and get the students t pass the sentence rally t see which clumn get all the sentences right. Explain the rules as fllwing.
    The first student in each team will get a piece f paper. He r she will read what is written n the paper silently and try t remember it. Then he r she will pass it t the student behind him/her rally, until the last student gets it. At last, the last student in each team will tell the whle class what he/she knws. We will see which grup can pass the wrds crrectly and quickly.
    Here are the 8 pssible sentences:
    When the game is finished make a summary. Obviusly, it is nt easy fr us t remember the sentences very well in such a shrt time. Hwever, we may definitely remember the main pints. Nw, I am trying t use three wrds t summary the main pints f each sentences. They are ‘wh’ ‘when’ and ‘what’. Yu see!
    STEP 2 The quickest, the best!
    When we read a passage, we can als use this methd. Yu can find them frm these seven pints.(Shw students the sentences. ) Nw let’s try!
    Can yu find ut the main pints in the fllwing passage?
    The methd wrks, especially when the stry is lng. It is really difficult t remember everything frm the very beginning. Why nt just remember the main pints?
    STEP 3 Reading t find the main pint
    Nw please pen yur bk t page 14. Here is an article abut a girls Can yur read and find the main pints f it?
    STEP 4 Putting in Cindy’s shes
    Students are nw in a new schl. S it is easy fr them t put themselves in Cindy’s shes. That is t say they can understand hw Cindy feels easily.
    Make full use f this and get them t guess the meaning f sme f the new wrds, such as ‘nervus’.
    Get the student t read the whle passage ludly. Help them t remember and understand the passage. I will get the students t fcus n the fllwing questins.
    This passage is abut the things at schl. They are happening arund the students. S it is nt difficult fr the students t have sme images in mind while reading. Therefre, we may find anther gd way t remember a stry. That is t be a ‘film-maker’. Try t imagine a Cindy in yur mind and remember the stry by transfer the wrds int pictures.
    STEP 5 Helping Cindy

    Get the students t think f sme ways in which we can help Cindy.

    Read the passage and try t recite it.
    Finish ff the exercises in the Evaluatin Handbk and Learning English.

    What happened? (Her car stps and desn’t start again.)
    Where did it happen? (At the traffic lights)
    When did it happen? (One Saturday)
    Why did it happen? (Because her car is t ld.)
    Hw did it happen?
    Mrs. Brwn is eighty years ld. She has an ld car. She always drives t the shps n Saturday and buys sme fd.
    One Saturday she stps her car at sme traffic lights whey they are red. But it desn't start again! The lights becme green, then yellw, then red, then green again, but Mrs. Brwn’s car can’t start. Just then a pliceman cmes and says t her with a smile, “Gd mrning. Yu like all f ur clrs, dn’t yu?”
    What is it abut? It’s abut prblems with a new schl.
    Wh is it abut? A Grade 8 student called Cindy.
    What happened? She changed t a new secndary schl. She is unhappy, nervus and uncmfrtable at the new schl. She is always alne
    Where did it happen? In sunshine twn.
    When did it happen? After changing t the new schl.
    Why did it happen? She desn't have friends there and she misses her classmates in the ld schl.
    Hw did it happen?
    What are Cindy’s prblems?
    Why des Cindy have these prblems?
    Hw des Cindy feel?
    Why des she feel s.
    She can try t talk with her classmates.
    She can talk abut the prblem with her gd friends.
    She can try t play with smebdy arund her.
    The teacher can ask smebdy t help her, talk with her and slve her prblems.
