    1. On this lake was an island.
    与此句结构类似的还有课文中的“On that island.one hundred years ago,lived the Phantom.一百年前,在那个小岛上,住着一个幽灵。”
    【拓展】句子谓语是go,come,run等表示位置的动词和be动词,句中又有表示方位的副词(如there,here,up,down,out,in,away等),为了强调该副词,可将其放于句首,而将谓语动词全部置于主语之前。
Here comes the train to Beijing.去北京的火车来了。
    There goes the bell.铃响了。
    Down came the rain.下雨了。
    【注意】 但主语是人称代词时,主语仍置于动词之前。
Away he comes.他来了。 Here it comes.它来了。

    2. At birth he was so ugly that his own mother made him wear a mask.
    so ...that意为“如此……以至”,连接一个结果状语从句,that有时可以省略。后面有名词时,可以用such...that引导结果状语从句,常见句型有:

    adj.
    adv. a/an+ adj. +n.(单)
    so+ adj.十a/an+ n.(单) +that such+ adj.+ n.(复) + that
    many/few十n.+(复) adj. +n.(不可数) much/little+ n.(不可数)

【例句】 There is so little time left that I have to leave at once.剩下的时间不多了,我得马上离开。
There were such a lot of people in the street that we could hardly move on. 街上人太多,我们简直无法往前走。
He shut the window with such force that the glass broke.他关窗子的时候用力太猛,把玻璃都震破了。

    虽然以-ly结尾,但不是副词,而是形容词,在句子中可充当定语或表语。

    6. They burst in, ready to kill him.

The United States is well-known for its network of major highways designed to help a driver get from one place to another in the shortest possible time. 47 these wide modern roads are generally smooth and well maintained, with 48 sharp curves and many straight sections, a direct route is not always the most enjoyable one. For those who are tired of doing the laundry, Samsung has found an answer: a washing machine that can tell you when your laundry is done via a smart phone app(application).
Strange though it may seem-“my wife already does that” was a common response among attendees viewing the device when it was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show(CES) this week-Samsung is just one of many appliance makers racing to install a large number of interest-connected features in machines in an effort to make them “smart”.
Last year, it was a refrigerator that tweeted. This year, it’s Wi-Fi-enabled laundry machines and fridges that can tell you when your groceries are going bad.
The washers and dryers, available starting in the spring, connect to any smartphone through a downloadable application. The phone can then be used as a remote control, so the machines can be turned on and off while their owners is at work or on the bus.
Samsung says it’s not just something new – the app connection actually has some practical uses.
“If you started to dry clothes in the morning and forgot to take them out, you can go to your phone and restart your dryer for the time when come home, so your clothes are refreshed and ready to go,” said spokes person Amy Schmidt.
The company also says that with electricity rate varying depending on the time of day, more control over when the machines are used can help save money.
Perhaps, but what they will probably really accomplish is what all good technologies do – enable laziness. Rather than getting up to check on whether the laundry is done, users will instead monitor it on their phones while watching TV.

57.What can be inferred from the common response of the attendees at the CES?
    A. The machine will be a big success.
    B. Their wives like doing the laundry.
    C. The machine is unrelated to their life.
    D. This kind of technology is familiar to them.

    58. What can we learn about the new laundry machines?
    A. They can tell you when your clothes need washing.
    B. They can be controlled with a smart-phone.
    C. They are difficult to operate.
    D. They are sold at a low price.

59.We can conclude from Samsung’s statements that _____.
    A. the app connection makes life easier
    B. it is better to dry clothes in the morning
    C. smart phone can shorten the drying time
    D. we should refresh clothes back at home

    60. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
    A. The laundry should be frequently checked.
    B. Lazy people like using such machines.
    C. Good technologies also cause problems.
    D. Television may help do the laundry.

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned at children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play watch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning , which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming , bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “ Twinkle , twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning on the other hand , is really necessary for one’s future development.

61.What is the main idea of paragraph 1?

    B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
    C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
    D. Stories for children are easy to remember.

    B. a special case of cramming.
    C. a skill to deal with math problems.
    D. a basic step towards advanced studies.

    64. What is the author’s opinion on cramming?
    A. It leads to failure in college exams.

A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults. But whether the extent to watch TV may or may not be to blame is a question that the study leaves unanswered.
The research used a national long-term survey of teenagers’ health to survey the relationship between media use and depression. They based their findings on more than 4000 young teenagers who were not depressed when the survey began in 1995. As a part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of five and one-half hours a day. More than two hours of that was spent watching TV. Seven years later, in 2001, more than seven percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was twenty-one.
Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author of the new study. He says every extra hour of television meant an eight percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression.
Doctor Primack says the study did not explore if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility, he says, is that it may take time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like sports and socializing. It might also interfere with sleep, he says, and that could have an increase.
In December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to read, attend religious services and to vote.

Americans are proud of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of a lift operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?
Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian clothes. People have become conditioned to expect higher quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform is likely to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a hairdresser, or a waiter to lose professional identity than to step out of uniform?
Uniforms also have many practical good points. They are often more comfortable and more lasting than civilian clothes.
Primary among the argument against uniforms is their lack of variety and the loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they are likely to think, speak, and act similarly on the job at least.
Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.
    70. What surprises us is that Americans ____.
    A. still judge a man by his clothes B. think highly of uniforms
    C. less prefer wearing civilian clothes D. respect a lift operator in uniform
    71. People are likely to think that a man in uniform ____.
    A. suggests quality work B. shows his social position
    C. appears to be more practical D. looks more fresh and attractive
    72. Those who are against uniforms believe that people wearing uniforms ____.
    A. are usually helpful B. have little freedom
    C. lose personal character D. enjoy greater popularity
    73. It can be concluded from the passage that ____.
    A. people generally trust a person in uniform
    B. people enjoy wearing comfortable uniform
    C. the cost of the uniform is acceptable to people
    D. people wear uniforms to show their professions

His best short stories including The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, To Build a Fire and so on. As a committed socialist, he insisted against editorial pressures to write political essays and insert social criticism in his fiction.
The main idea of this novel is about a dog named Buck, He is ripped from his pampered surroundings and shipped to Alaska to be a sled dog. He is a courageous dog fighting for survival in the Alaskan wilderness, and emerge his primitive wolf-like nature.
The book is set in the gold rush in Alaskan. The writing style of this book is realism. We can see the character trait of Buck from the book. At the beginning, the author says that Buck has the quality of wolf: firm, powerful and insidious, but he feels grateful for his benefactor. It shows many kinds of contradiction of life from his action.
The first is the socialist theory of Marx. Buck was treated with great cruelty by his master using a club. The club symbolizes the social right institution. The proletariat suffer ruthless exploitation and heavy oppression. The second is Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. For example, we can know it from his ability of adjusting to the unfamiliar environment.
The theme of this novel is to expose the idea of returning to nature, the principle of survival of the fittest and the reality of the social life at that time, and the spirit of humanitarianism. It reflects the liveliness of animals, the relationship between the animals and human beings, the social darkness and the complication of humanity.
The language of this book is very elegant and leaves a favorable impression on me. It uses symbolism effectively. The wildness symbolizes purity, justice and equality. It neither helps nor prevents the human beings’ adventure. However, if someone violates natural law, he or she will receive severe punishment. The novel tells us that we should learn to tap our existing potential and survive with indomitable will under terrible conditions, if we want to succeed.

    A. He thought it was too heavy.
    B. He identified with them and made some changes in his novel.

    76. Which one is not an aim of describing such a dog as Buck?
    A. To tap our existing potential.
    B. To encourage us to live with a strong will.
    C. To reflect the spirits of humanitarianism.
    D. To symbolize the dark side of human beings.

More and more people are taking their iPads to bed with them to surf the web, check facebook or send e-mails before switching off the light. But researchers are warning that the blue light their screens give off can stop users getting a good night’s sleep. That is because this type of light is similar to daylight, convincing the brain that it is still daytime. Blue light prevents the production of a brain chemical called melatonin, which helps us fall asleep. By contrast, light which is more orange or red does not prevent melatonin production, perhaps because our brains recognize it as a cue that the day ends.
Scientists have known for years that staring at screens late in the evening can affect sleep ---- be they television screens, computer screens or mobile phone screens. However, because mobiles and iPads are by nature portable ---- not to say addictive ---- more people are taking them into the bedroom. Users also tend to hold them much closer to their eyes than a computer or television screen.
Researchers are warning that looking at iPad displays for more than two hours leads to lower natural melatonin levels as the devices give off blue light. They say, “Turning off the devices at night is the final solution. But if you have to use these devices at night, dim the display to cut down irritation of the eyes and limit the time you spend on them before bed.”
They wrote in the journal Applied Ergonomics(应用人类工程学) that iPad makers should adjust the spectral power distribution(光谱功率分布) of the devices so that they affect the sleep patterns of users less.
It is not just a good night’s sleep that could be harmed by too much late night screen time. Researchers know that long-term harm to sleep patterns can lead to an increased risk of obesity and even cancers.
    77. Blue light prevents iPad users from sleeping well because ____.
    A. it makes the brain more active
    B. it can help decrease the production of melatonin
    C. it is brighter than light that is more orange or red
    D. it is the same as daylight which keeps people awake
    78. The underlined phrase “dim the display” means ____.
    A. turn off the display B. keep away from the display
    C. clean the display carefully D. make the display less bright
    79. In the last paragraph, the author intends to ____.
    A. show the danger of obesity and cancers
    B. call on researchers to study sleep patterns
    C. warn of the seriousness of long-term poor sleep
    D. show how sleep is harmed by using iPads too much
    80. What’s the main idea of the passage?
    A. People should limit the use of electronic devices.
    B. Using iPads before bed can cause a poor night’s sleep.
    C. Scientists are warning that blue light is bad for our health.
    D. Looking at screens of iPads increase chances of sleeplessness.

As computers become more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.
Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widespread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer.
All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.
It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.
“When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”
“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”
Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?
Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”
To encourage students to resort to handwriting more, many primary schools in Beijing have writing classes compulsory and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.
    81. The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer because ____.
    A. they are usually asked to e-mail their homework and essays
    B. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently
    C. they find it not easy to remember how to write a character
    D. computers have become a trend and fashion in China
    82. Which of the following statements is NOT the advantage of handwriting?
    A. Handwriting contains the writer’s emotion.
    B. The writer’s thinking and personality are shown in his or her handwriting.
    C. Handwriting can impress people well and build one’s self-confidence.
    D. Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value.
    83. The underlined expression “taking stock in” probably means ____.
    A. getting bored with B. getting dependent on
    C. becoming crazy about D. getting curious about
    84. We can learn from the last paragraph that ____.
    A. more and more students will give up writing on a computer
    B. writing by hand will give way to typing by computer one day
    C. more and more students will pay attention to handwriting
    D. the typing article better expresses one’s emotion and quality

“Particulate Matter 2.5(PM 2.5 for short)” is now an enemy of the people. The harmful, tiny pieces of matter, up to 2.5 microns in diameter, are too small to be seen by the naked eye. So they can be easily breathed into lungs of people and do harm to people’s health. With the issue of pollution heatedly discussed, some people are wondering what possible solutions might be on the way. One might very well be a renewed effort to kick-start the electric car industry. Some reports suggest that the use of battery cars should be expanded from the present five cities to 20 more.
But so far no country in the world has succeeded in making dream of emission free driving a reality. Despite the lofty ideal, the electric car has so far been a disappointment, accounting for only a fraction of 1% of global car sales. And the same is true in China. There is an existing target to put five million on the road by 2020 but the Chinese consumer is so far very much unconvinced.
BYD Auto Company is just one electric vehicle maker hoping that the time is now ripe for the government to step up its efforts. BYD is making electric cars but as yet not selling in great numbers. Electric cars are not cheap. It would still leave more than $40,000 to be paid before you could drive away in a BYD e6. And buyers have worries other than price.
“I think that when you talk to a regular Joe about electric vehicles he is excited, but when you ask Mr. Joe to buy one, he’s nervous,” said Isbrand Ho from BYD’s Auto Export Trade Division. “How far will my vehicle go?” The answer for an e6 is well in excess of 300 kms(190 miles) on one charge. That is the sort of number that might just start looking attractive to less price-sensitive customers but China still doesn’t have anything like enough charging stations to make the car a practical choice.
Last year, BYD sold only 1,700 electric cars in China. Isbrand Ho says that at that volume the car is naturally expensive. What they need, he says, is for production to get above a certain threshold, and then costs will come down.
    85. What does the underlined word “One” in the first paragraph stand for?
    A. PM 2.5. B. the issue of pollution.
    C. A possible solution. D. A heated discussion.
    86. BYD Auto Company thinks that ____.
    A. it is time for our government to encourage people to use electric cars
    B. it can sell electric cars in large numbers now
    C. consumers are concerned about only the price of the electric cars
    D. the price of the electric cars is neither too high nor too low
    87. Which of the following statements is true according to this passage?
    A. PM 2.5 can be easily breathed into the lungs of people because of its weight.
    B. China has never tried any environment-friendly method of transport.
    C. The electric cars are not widely used in the whole world.
    D. Customers can be easily persuaded to buy electric cars.
    88. According to Isbrand Ho, ____ will bring down the price of the electric cars.
    A. improvement of environment B. innovation
    C. new technology D. more production
