The thing that caught my eye was how he   37   to keep himself going when all   38   seemed lost, when there seemed to be no point in   39   the struggle, when he was suffering greatly. The truth is that our situations are   51    only compared with something better. But others have been through   52   worse situations. I’ve read enough history to know you and I are lucky to be where we are. So   53   you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared with what others have been through, you’re    54     . Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the   55   spots with a little more fortitude.

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful bird, which was very curious about Hell. When she was little, her mother always told her that if she didn’t master the flying skills, she would go to Hell. She was so curious about Hell that she always asked others what Hell looked like, but no one was sure, because none of them had ever been there. Some said Hell was a place full of water, and others told her that Hell was full of burning fire. However, the bird knew they were lying. She wanted to find out what Hell was.

If the Olympic Games are a history of mankind, wrestling (摔跤) is the prologue (序幕). When the ancient Games of the Olympiad were born, wrestling was already an ancient game. Widely recognized as the world’s oldest competitive sport, wrestling appeared in a series of Egyptian wall paintings as early as 5,000 years ago. When the ancient Olympic Games began in 776 BC, more than two thousand years later, it included wrestling and in the years that followed, wrestling featured as the main event.
The sport would return in a similar role when the Olympic Games returned after a 1,500-year absence in 1896. Organizers, seeking direct links to ancient times, found wrestling was very popular across much of the ancient world, from Greece, Assyria and Babylon to India, China and Japan. Greco-Roman wrestling, a style which was believed to be passed down from the Greek and Roman wrestlers of old was brought back into use.
In Greco-Roman wrestling, the wrestlers used only their arms and upper bodies to attack. They could hold only those same parts of their opponents (对手). It worked nicely from a historical attitude, but another cheerful and relaxing style was sweeping across Great Britain and the United States by then. Known as “catch as catch can”, it had become popular at fairs and festivals in both countries.
In 1904, the Olympic Games added the second wrestling event and called it “freestyle”. Now, wrestlers could use their legs for pushing, lifting and tripping, and they could hold opponents above or below the waist.
    59. The first ancient Games of the Olympiad were held almost ________ years ago.
    A. 776      B. 1,500     C. 3,000      D. 5,000

    A. The ancient Olympic Games have a long history.
    B. Wrestling was an important game in the ancient Olympic Games.
    C. Wrestling is popular all the time.
    D. Wrestling has a really long history.
    61. Why was Greco-Roman wrestling brought back into use in 1896 when the Olympic Games returned?
    A. Organizers wanted to find direct links to ancient times.
    B. Wrestling was very popular across much of the ancient world.
    C. People believed it was passed down from the Greek and Roman wrestlers of old.
    D. All the above.

Ms Keller often said, “Without Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.”
As a little girl, Sullivan was no stranger to hardship (困苦). She almost couldn’t see anything and was, at one time, locked in a dark underground room of a mental institution (精神病院) because of mental problems. Little Annie Sullivan would attack anyone who came near sometimes. However, an elderly nurse believed there was hope and she offered to help the child. Every day she made all her efforts to give little Annie words of love and encouragement.
At last, doctors noticed a change in the girl. They ever saw anger and hostility (敌意) in her eyes, while now they noted a little gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs where she continued to become better. Then the day finally came when this seemingly “hopeless” child was released.
Anne Sullivan grew into a young woman with a desire to help others as she, herself, was helped by the kind nurse. It was she who saw hope in Helen Keller. She loved her, played with her until the flickering candle became a bright light to the world. Anne Sullivan brought wonders into Helen’s life. But without that kind and warm-hearted nurse, how could little Annie become such a kind-hearted teacher?
And so it goes. Just how far back does the chain of love extend? And how far forward will it lead?
You can never ignore the power of your love. It is a fire that, once lit, may burn forever.
63.What does the underlined sentence in the second paragraph mean?

(LONDON) — If it really is what’s on the inside that counts, then a lot of thin people might be in trouble.
Some doctors now think that the internal fat surrounding important organs like the heart or liver (肝脏) could be as dangerous as the external fat which can be noticed more easily.
“Being thin doesn’t surely mean you’re not fat,” said Dr Jimmy Bell at Imperial College. Since 1994, Bell and his team have scanned nearly 800 people with MRI machines to create “fat maps” showing where people store fat.
According to the result, people who keep their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits (储存) of internal fat, even if they are slim.
Even people with normal Body Mass Index scores can have surprising levels of fat deposits inside. Of the women, as many as 45 percent of those with normal BMI scores (20 to 25) actually had too high levels of internal fat. Among men, the percentage was nearly 60 percent.
According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are actually on the edge of being fat. They eat too many fatty and sugary foods, but they are not eating enough to be fat. Scientists believe we naturally store fat around the belly first, but at some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere.
Doctors are unsure about the exact dangers of internal fat, but some think it has something to do with heart disease and diabetes. They want to prove that internal fat damages the body’s communication systems.
The good news is that internal fat can be easily burned off through exercise or even by improving your diet. “If you want to be healthy, there is no short cut. Exercise has to be an important part of your lifestyle,” Bell said.
    68. What is this piece of news mainly about?
    A. Thin people may be fat inside.
    B. Internal fat is of no importance.
    C. Internal fat leads to many diseases.
    D. Thin people also have troubles.
    69. Doctors have found _______.
    A. the exact dangers of internal fat
    B. internal fat is the cause of heart disease and diabetes
    C. being slim is not dangerous at all
    D. being slim doesn’t mean you are not fat inside
    70. According to the passage, which of the following is WRONG?
    A. Exercise can help to reduce the internal fat.
    B. People can get rid of internal fat by improving diet.
    C. Men are more likely to have too much internal fat.
    D. People with heart disease all have internal fat.
    71. From the last paragraph, we can find that        .
    A. whether internal fat can lead to disease has been proved
    B. exercise plays an important role in people’s life for keeping healthy
    C. thin people usually have internal fat even if they are slim
    D. it is easier to burn off internal fat than external fat
    72. The underlined part in the last paragraph means        .
    A. a long road                  B. an easy way
    C. a clear difference          D. a short distance

New York City schoolchildren can’t use cellphones at school because of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s ban on cellphones in schools. Many parents are opposed to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s ban on cellphones in schools by e-mail messages.
Skip to next paragraphThere was a 13-year-old student who was shot with a gun after school, unable to call his mother for help. There was a high school student robbed three times last year, twice in her school building. There was a girl who got a piece of glass placed in her eye during school and was saved from a possible cornea transplant (角膜移植) only because, having disobeyed the cellphone ban, she was able to call her mother and get an operation on time.
The ban has been on for years, but it set off a widespread parental outcry only in April, after some headmasters sent home letters reminding parents that cellphones are not allowed to be brought into school.
Mr Bloomberg has defended the ban, saying that cellphones are bad and often used to cheat or call in friends for fights. If something is important, he says, parents can call schools directly.
On the other hand, many of the e-mail messages from parents described the ban as “cruel and heartless”, “absurdly wrong-headed”, “anti-parent”, “ridiculous”.
“We respect the fears that parents have,” David Cantor, a spokesman for Schools Minister Joel I. Klein said, “but after all the fact is that having phones in schools always leads to more problems.”
    73. A 13-year-old student was shot with a gun after school, unable to call his mother for help, because ____.
    A. his mother had no cellphone        B. he didn’t take a cellphone with him
    C. his mother wasn’t at home         D. he was too frightened to call
    74. From the fifth paragraph we can see many parents _________ the ban.

    75. According to what the spokesman said, the school might _______.
    A. continue the ban          B. call off the ban
    C. thank the parents          D. allow some students to use cellphones at school

    语态。
    31. B。allow sb to do sth 允许某人去做某事。“妈妈对我很严格,晚上不允许我在外呆太晚”。let, make
    后要接动词原形,refuse to do sth 拒绝做某事,不符合语境。
    32. D。gold 为 “金的,金制的”,表示是真金的质地;golden为 “金的,金色的”,指金黄色的外
    表,还有引申意义,有“贵重,重要”的意思。如a gold watch金表;a golden watch金色的表;
    golden sunlight金色的阳光。
    33. B。英语的倍数表达方法: three times longer than, three times the length of, three times as long as。
    34. C。句中有表示一段时间的for ten years,所以要与表示状态的词或短语连用。be married to表示状
    态,又由于是明年才满十年,所以要用将来时。marry sb是瞬间动词不能与表示一段时间的状语
    连用。
    35. A。rooted adj. 根深蒂固,信念坚定,不易动摇的;rootless adj.无根基的; root n. 根;rooting不能
    用作形容词。
    36. A。从全文来看,在海上漂了76天后,他过得非常艰苦,所以应当是比刚出发时瘦了许多。
    37. A。他设法让自己活了下来。manage to do sth设法成功地做了某事。
    38. D。茫茫大海,只有他只身一人,应当是在没有任何希望的情况下。
    39. A。在没有希望的情况下,继续奋斗已没有任何意义。continue to do sth,继续做某事。
    40. A。他的小阀破了,为了生存,他要把它修理好。fix修理。
    41. A。修理后,它仍然漏气。
    42. B。漏气后,他没有选择,只能不断给它吹气。blow,吹(气)。
    43. D。在既没有希望,自己的设备又总出毛病的情况下,一般人都会觉得放弃是最明智的选择。give
    up放弃;give in屈服。
    44. A。根据后文句子的提示,知道Steven Callahan告诉自己他能够处理这件事情。handle处理。
    45. A。根据后文的内容,应选与他人所经历的事情相比,因此用A。
    46. A。Steven Callahan 通过一次一次地告诉自己:与他人相比,他还是幸运的,以此来坚定自己的信念。
    build up提高,增强。
    47. A。作者把这些话都记了下来。write down记下,写下。
    48. B。当我的目标离我很遥远时,我也曾告诉自己同样的事情。
    49. D。根据or可以判断,要选“难题”。
    50. B。I have always come back to my senses. 从这句话可知每当作者说这些话的时候,他/她就又冷静下来了。
    51. B。根据后面的better,可知坏只有在和更好的事情相比较时才会产生,因此选B。
    52. A。much修饰比较级,说明别人经历过更糟糕的事情。
    53. A。作through的宾语,句意为“不管我们经历怎样的事情”,因此选A。whatever, 不管怎样。
    54. D。把你经历的事和别人所经历的事做一下比较,你会发现你是多么的幸运。从I’ve read enough history
to know you and I are lucky to be where we are.
    57. C。从She thought in this way she could go to Hell and see what Hell looked like.
    58. D。“Hell is a small well-decorated cage.” Before she closed her eyes forever, she finally answered that
    question herself.
    62. C。由In 1904, the Olympic Games added the second wrestling event and called it “freestyle”.
Doctors are unsure about the exact dangers of internal
fat, but some think it has something to do with heart disease and diabetes.
    69. D。从People who keep their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits of
internal fat, even if they are slim.
an easy way与a shout cut意思接近。
    74. B。从第五段e-mail messages中“cruel and heartless”, “absurdly wrong-headed”, “anti-parent”, “ridiculous”
    75. A。but after all the fact is that having phones in schools always leads to more problems.
