It all happened one afternoon in Carl's backyard a few years ago. We had just finished playing stickball, and I was about to go home.
“Wait a minute,’’ Carl yelled. He ran into his house and came back with a book for me to take home and read. All he said was,“See if you like it. ”
I said absolutely nothing. I kept the book for a couple of weeks and then returned it unread. Carl never asked me if I liked it or not. During the following two years Carl lent me three more books. Each time I returned them unread.
A few days after graduating from high school, Carl asked, "Benny, which college are you going to?"
“I’m not going to college.” I said.
    “Why not?” he asked.
“Because my father can’t afford the tuition (学费).” I answered .

According to the study posted on ScienceDirect, gardening just two to three times a week increase the benefits of better well-being as much as possible and lower stress levels.
The research explored why residents engaged with gardening and the extent to which they recognized any health benefits from the activity.
A questionnaire was handed out electronically within the UK, with 5,766 gardeners and 249 non-gardeners responding. Data was collected on factors including garden typology (类型学),frequency of gardening and individual awareness of health and well-being.
“This is the first time the dose response (剂量调查)to gardening has been tested and the evidence from the survey strongly suggests that the more frequently you garden, the greater the health benefits,” said Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) lead author Dr Lauriane Chalmin-Pui. In fact, gardening every day has the same positive impact on well-being than undertaking regular and powerful exercise like cycling or running.
When gardening, our brains are pleasantly entertained by nature around us. Gardening takes our attention away from ourselves and our stresses, therefore, it helps restore our minds and reduce unfavorable feelings.
Improving health, however, was not the main motive power to garden, but rather the direct pleasure gardening brought to the participants.
“Gardening is like effortless exercise because it doesn’t feel as exhausting and hard as going to the gym, for example, but we can expend similar amounts of energy,” Chalmin-Pui added.
Most people say they garden for pleasure and enjoyment, so people who like gardening may be easy to be addicted to it. However, this sometimes may become a piece of good news, from the aspect of mental health. “We hope all the millions of new gardeners will be getting their daily gardening and feeling all the better for it. Chalmin-Pui said in the interview.
28.What can be inferred about gardening from the survey?
    A. Improving health is the aim of the participants.
    B. Gardening makes no difference to health.
    C. Health benefits from frequent gardening.
    D. Too much gardening always does harm to health.
29.What does the underlined word “expend” mean in paragraph 7?
    A. Consume. B. Make use of. C. Increase. D. Save.
30.Why do so many participants like gardening?
    A. It isn’t exhausting. B. It brings pleasure.
    C. It is good for health. D. It is like going to the gym.
31.What is Chalmin-Pui’s attitude to the new gardeners’ gardening?
    A. Carefree. B. Tolerant. C. Supportive D. Indifferent.
    D
Paper is an important part of modern life. People use it in school, at work, to make artwork and books, to wrap presents and much more. Trees are the most common material for paper these days.
So how do people make paper out of trees today? People first cut trees, load them onto trucks and bring them to a factory. Machines cut open the outer coverings of the trees, and cut the trees into pieces. Those pieces are boiled into a soup. After that, it is hit flat, dried and cut up into sheets of paper.
The entire process, from planting a small tree to buying your school notebook, takes a very long time. Just growing the trees takes 10 to 20 years.
Making tons of paper from trees can harm the planet. Humans cut down 80,000 to 160,000 trees around the world every day, and use many of them to make paper. Some of those trees come from tree farms. But people also cut down forests for paper, which means that animals and birds lose their homes.
Cutting forests down also contributes to climate change, and paper factories pollute the air. After you throw paper, it often takes the paper six to nine years to break down. That’s why recycling is important. It saves a lot of trees, slows climate change and helps protect endangered animals, birds and all creatures that rely on forests for their homes and food.
So if paper isn’t good for the environment, why don’t people write on something else? The answer: They do. With computers, tablets and cellphones, people use much less paper than in the past. Maybe a day will come when we won’t use paper at all—or will save it for very special books and artworks.
32.What can we know about making paper out of trees?
    A. It costs much money. B. It takes a lot of time.
    C. It is very easy and fast. D. It is dangerous and difficult.
33.What is the impact of paper production?
    A. It promotes the recycling.
    B. It does harm to the environment.
    C. It slows down the climate change.
    D. It protects the animals from losing homes.
34.How will we use paper someday in the future according to the text?
    A. Use it for artworks. B. Use the recycled paper.
    C. Treasure it occasionally. D. Use it for books only.
35.What idea does the author want to express from the text?
    A. The good reasons for making paper.
    B. The wonderful experience of making paper.
    C. The necessary process of making paper.
    D. The influence of making paper on environment.

Many people get nervous on occasion, like when giving a speech or interviewing for a new job. 36 Society anxiety disorder involves intense fear of certain social situations—especially the ones that are unfamiliar or in which you feel you'll be evaluated by others. These situations may be so frightening that they may disrupt your life in the process.
37 You may be afraid that people will think badly of you or that you won’t measure up in comparison to others. Even though you probably realize that your fears are at least somewhat unreasonable, you still can’t help feeling anxious.
Although it may feel like youre the only one with this problem, social anxiety is actually quite common. 38 But the situations that cause the symptoms of social anxiety disorder can be different. Some people experience anxiety in most social situations. For others,,anxiety is connected to specific social situations, such as speaking to strangers or performing in front of audiences.
Just because you occasionally get nervous in social situations doesn’t mean you have social anxiety disorder. Many people feel shy on occasion, yet it doesn't get in the way of their everyday functioning. 39 But if you have social anxiety, you might worry for weeks ahead of time, or start shaking so bad during the speech that you can hardly speak.
While it may seem like there’s nothing you can do about the symptoms of social anxiety disorder, in reality, there are many ways that can help. 40
    A. Many people struggle with these fears.
    B. But social anxiety disorder is more than just occasional shyness.
    C. For example, it's perfectly normal to be nervous before giving a speech.
    D. Focus your attention on other people, but not on what they’re thinking of you!
    E. Understanding the reasons for your anxieties is one of the ways.
    F. But no matter how shy you may be, you can learn to be comfortable in social situations.
    G. Basically, social anxiety disorder is the fear of being judged or embarrassed in public.

W:There are a few good shows on. What do you feel like watching! science fiction, comedy, dramas and adventure?
M: Well,I don’t mind science fiction. I quite like comedy and dramas but adventure’s my favorite.
W: OK. There’s a new adventure movie on tonight. Let’s see that then.
    Text 10!
W:Now,I’d like to talk about a piece of news about the cars. The recent increase in car theft has alarmed the police. They are looking for what they now believe must be a well-organized group of professional car thieves. Most of the thefts have taken place in the rich living areas around Southwell Park, where last week alone 22 car thefts were reported to the local police. Of these only two have been found ,one of which was abandoned in Rockinghill palace Road 20 miles away. The others have still not been found except for one which had been falsely reported missing. The owner later admitted that he had forgotten where he had parked it until his wife told him. An interesting aspect of the thefts is that nearly all the missing cars had been taken from locked garages. The owners now admit that they may have left the car doors unlocked but only one owner is not certain whether he had locked the garage door. The police has therefore learned that the thieves find it easier to break into garages where vehicles are often left unlocked at night than into locked cars parked on the roadside in daytime or at night. They advise car owners to lock up their cars even when
they are kept in locked garages.

    Dear John,
How is it going? I'd like to tell you that I always want to go to university in Britain after high school. But I know little about universities in your country.
I like maths, biotechnology and economics. I don’t know which university is suitable forme to study the major I like. So please tell me more about the majors mentioned above in British universities. I have only heard about Oxford and Cambridge. Would you please introduce some other famous British universities except these two universities in England.
I would appreciate it if I could be offered the valuable information. Looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
