Step 1 Pre-reading
Activity 1
1. In grups, Ss discuss hw t celebrate the festivals with family each year, answer the fllwing questins and fill in the table.
Q1: What festivals d yu celebrate with yur family each year?
Q2: Why d yu think peple celebrate different festivals?
2. Have the Ss lk at the tw pictures in the passage. Students say the English name f the festival and the basis f their judgment accrding t the situatin, bjects and wrds presented in the tw pictures.
Q: What festivals are the tw pictures abut? Hw d yu knw?
3. Based n the title f the article and the illustratins in the passage, the students can guess what the authr may be talking abut. The teacher can ask individual students t express their pinins and list the pints mentined n the blackbard.
Step 2 Reading
Activity 2
1. Students read the text “Why d we celebrate festivals?” carefully. The teacher can present the fllwing sentences fr the students t fill in after reading:

2. After the students have filled in the blanks, the teachers and students check the answers.

1. Lk fr tpic sentences. The reading strategy in the bx n the right f student reading Activity 3. The teacher can check whether the students' understanding f the strategy is accurate r nt by the fllwing questins.

2. Students read the text again and cmplete the activity independently. When checking the answers, students shuld read the cmplete tpic sentence.
Activity 4
1. Explre the rts f the festival. Students have a grup discussin arund the first questin in activity 4. Teachers can inspire students t think and express their pinins thrugh a series f questins, such as:
*When we talk abut festivals, we may think f many different kinds f festivals arund the wrld. Their names, rigins, celebratin activities can be quite different. Hwever, since festivals exist in every cuntry and culture, there must be sme similarities. What are they? Please discuss these questins with yur partner and share yur ideas.
*What d yu think mst festivals seem t have in cmmn? Can yu give sme examples t illustrate yur pinin?
*What d yu think are the mst imprtant things in mst festivals?
*Why d yu think peple arund the wrld find these things imprtant? D they have smething t d with the human histry/scial life/peple’s spiritual needs?
After finishing the discussin, Teacher asks different grups t tell their pinins.
2. Discuss the changes f festival custms. Teacher's questin “What festival custms have already faded away?” Let the students brainstrm abut the festivals and traditins that are gradually withdrawing frm mdern life. Then write dwn what the students have said n the blackbard.
After the discussin, the teacher may call in different grups t reprt. When students reprt, teachers shuld use curseware r blackbard t present sme expressins fr students’ reference, such as:

3. Cmment n the cmmercializatin f festivals. Students discuss the third questin in Activity 4 in small grups. Befre the discussin, the teacher shuld remind the students t find relevant statements frm the text and draw a cnclusin by analyzing the authr's wrding. In additin, teachers can als let students express their true feelings and views n the cmmercializatin f festivals.
4. Teacher shares his/her views n this issue:

Step 3 Analyzing discurse structure
Activity 5
1. Students discuss in pairs, analyze the structure f the discurse by drawing a mind map, and demnstrate the textual structure and lgical level f the discurse.
Step 4 Understanding difficulties
Read the text again and find sme sentences r expressins that yu find difficult t understand. Teacher can als ask students t find sme subtle sentence patterns and expressins in the text and encurage them t use them in writing. Accrding t the students' feedback, the teacher will write sme typical sentences n the blackbard. Such as:
*wide range f rigins (= a great number f different rigins, many kinds f rigins)
*It featured a parade and a great feast with music, dancing, and sprts. (= A parade and a great feast with music, dancing, and sprts were included as imprtant parts f the Egyptian harvest festival.)
*sme traditins may fade away and thers may be established. (= Sme traditins may disappear gradually, while ther new traditins may cme int being.)
Step 5 Practice
(1) Listen and fllw the tape. The teacher may remind the students t pay attentin t the meaning and usage f the black wrds in the cntext, s as t prepare fr the cmpletin f the blanks in Activity 5 and vcabulary exercises in the exercise bk.
(2) Students cmplete the text f Activity 5 by themselves. The teacher needs t remind the students t fill in the blanks with the crrect frm f the vcabulary they have learned in the text. Students exchange their answers with their partners, and then teacher and students check their answers.
(3) Finish the Ex in Activity 5 f students’ bk.
Step 6 Hmewrk
1. Read the text again, in-depth understanding f the text.
2. Discuss the rigin f festivals, the histrical changes f related custms, the influence f cmmercial sciety n festivals and the cnntatin and essential meaning f festivals.
