I've lng believed that psitive living, isn't abut being ptimistic every minute f every day. That kind f permanently happy state can't be the gal, because it's impssible t achieve.
It turns ut that psychlgical research finds true happiness cmes frm authentic psitivity, and authentic psitivity cmes frm emtinal flexibility.
Being flexible emtinally means being pen t the full range f emtinal experiences, including the challenging nes like anger, disappintment and sadness. Emtinal flexibility means being able t shift behavirs and mindsets t meet different situatinal needs, and adapting when circumstances change.
Hwever, emtinally flexible peple are nt chamelens(变色龙)whse utlk changes based n which way the wind is blwing. Instead, emtinal flexibility is a skill that helps peple judge the cmplexities f daily life, and stick t their deeply held values.

Eudaimnia, by cntrast, encurages us t pursue meaning and authenticity, grwth and hnest jy. Bth are philsphical appraches t happiness, and recent psychlgical thught is leaning tward eudaimnia as a mre sustainable, satisfying mdel.
Eudaimnia was first mentined by Aristtle, wh gt the term frm the Greek wrd "daimn," which means "true nature." Every racehrse has different abilities. Like humans, sme are shrt-distance runners, while thers are marathners. Figuring ut which is which and hw t pace them can be the difference between failure in the finish and taking the award hme. Jckeys(赛马骑师)and trainers have traditinally relied n centuries f experience and data frm previus races t plan their races.
Amandine Aftalin, a mathematician in Paris, thught she culd add t that. Since 2013, she has been analyzing the perfrmances f wrld champin runners like Usain Blt. She has fund that shrt-distance runners tend t win when they start strng and gradually slw dwn tward the finish line. But in medium-distance races, runners perfrm better when they start strng, settle dwn, and finish with a burst f speed.
Her mdel shws hw thse winning strategies maximize the energy utput f muscles reliant n tw different pathways: pwerful aerbic(有氧的)nes that require xygen, which can be in limited supply during a race, and anaerbic nes, which dn't need xygen but build up waste prducts that lead t tiredness.
Aftalin wndered which strategy wuld be best fr hrses. S she and Quentin Mercier, anther mathematician, tk advantage f a new GPS tracking tl inserted in French racing saddles(马鞍).
The tw studied patterns in many races at the Chantilly racetracks nrth f Paris and develped a mdel that accunted fr winning strategies fr three different races: a shrt ne (1,300 meters), a medium ne (1,900 meters), and a slightly lnger ne (2,100 meters), all with different starting pints n the same track. The mdel takes int accunt nt just different race distances, but als the size r frictin frm the track surface.
The results might surprise jckeys wh hld hrses back early fr bursts f energy in the last finish. Instead, a strng start leads t a better finish, the team fund. "That desn't mean thse jckeys are wrng, thugh. If the start is t strng, it can be devastating as well, leaving the hrse tired by the end," Aftalin says.
    32. What shuld a runner d t get an award accrding t the text?
    A. Make a gd start. B. Plan fr the race early.
    C. Run slwly n the starting line. D. Try running quickly all the time.
    33. What frmed the basis fr Aftalin's studying hrse race?
    A. The experience and data frm previus hrse races.
    B. The benefit f knwing hrses' different abilities.
    C. The success in studying runners' winning strategies.
    D. The perfrmance f hrses n different race distances.
    34. What des the underlined wrd "devastating" in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Bring. B. Damaging. C. Astnishing. D. Puzzling.
    35. What can we infer frm the text?
    A. Runners have the same energy utput f muscles.
    B. Aftalin's findings may help hrses t win the race.
    C. What Jckeys and trainers d makes n sense t hrses.
    D. Wrld champin runners made a cntributin t the study.
