The "30 by 30" campaign t prtect 30% f the wrld's ceans by 2030, supprted by mre than 70 natins, is knwn mstly fr ambitin and few achievements s far. Just 7% f the seas are prtected and nly 2.7% are highly prtected.
Setting aside nearly a third f the ceans, the fishers say, is an idea develping natins in Suth America and elsewhere can hardly affrd. That argument against a large expansin f sea prtected areas is heard arund the wrld, and the gap between cnservatinists and fishers has grwn wider as fish ppulatin declines and the appetite fr seafd grws alng with the glbal ppulatin.
Research published recently aims t dramatically change that situatin. After all, the nly way t get mre fd frm the cean is t prtect mre. And, as a bnus, it wuld prvide a "cheap, natural slutin" t climate change by reducing the amunt f seaflr carbn emitted (排放) int the seas by fishing trawlers (拖网渔船).
In the study, an internatinal team f 26 scientists analyzed the wrld's unprtected cean waters t calculate which are threatened by verfishing, habitat destructin, and release f carbn. The team then mapped lcatins glbally where prtectins wuld prvide the greatest benefits t fish resurces, bidiversity and climate.
The findings can be used by natins t address the three related aspects separately r in cmbinatin. Fully addressing all three will require that at least 30% f the ceans be prtected, but natins can still realize significant prtectins by fcusing n key areas, and glbal cperatin t strategically lcate prtected areas can be nearly twice as effective as individual natins wrking alne.
