“While animals can’t pick ut precise numbers, they can understand that mre is mre.Interestingly,we knw nw that numerical(数字的) cmpetence is present n almst every branch f the animal tree f life,” says Andreas Nieder,a neurbilgist frm the University f Tuebingen.“Different grups f animals bviusly develped this trait(特点) independently frm thers and that strngly indicates that it has t be f adaptive value.”
Hneybees,fr instance, can remember the number f landmarks they pass when searching fr fd in rder t find their way back t the hive. The last cmmn ancestr between hneybees and primates lived abut 600 millin years ag.But still, they evlved numerical cmpetence that,in many respects,is cmparable t vertebrate(脊椎动物的) numerical cmpetence.Als,fr example, male frgs sing “advertisement” calls t attract females. The females, listening fr the cmplexity f their calls, chse the male that sings the mst calls.
Wlves are mre likely t hunt successfully if they have the right number f wlves in their pack fr the size f their prey(猎物):With prey like deer, nly arund six t eight wlves are needed, while hunting wild x requires a pack f nine t thirteen.Their prey als uses this cncept t prtect themselves frm predatrs—deer tend t live in large herds t reduce the chance f any individual becming prey.S bviusly they are assessing the number f individuals in their grups fr their everyday life situatins.
Despite these many examples f numerical cmpetence in animals, this subject has nt gtten many first-hand studies.“Many f these behaviral findings in the wild have usually been cllected as by-prducts r accidental findings f ther research questins,” says Nieder. He argues that mre research needs t be dne t fully understand the numerical cmpetence.

A.It helps them frm hunting grups.
B.It gives them mre ptins t hunt.
C.It makes them discver mre prey.
D.It ffers them new skills t hunt.
答案 A
解析 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Wlves are mre likely t hunt successfully if they have the right number f wlves in their pack fr the size f their prey(猎物)...”可知,如果狼群中狼的数量与猎物的大小相符,狼更有可能成功捕食,由此可知,在狼的狩猎中数字能力能帮助它们形成狩猎群体。故选A。

Eurpean researchers say they have created a prcess that can prduce xygen frm mn dust. The prcess culd prvide a majr surce f xygen fr humans taking part in mn explratin activities in the future.Researchers frm the Eurpean Space Agency,r ESA,carried ut the experiments at a labratry in the Netherlands.
The team says ESA’s experimental “plant” was able t successfully prduce xygen frm simulated mn dust. The dust is part f a material knwn as reglith,a tp layer f dirt and rck pieces that sit n the surface f the mn.Samples f reglith returned frm the mn have cnfirmed that the material cntains abut 45 percent xygen by weight.Hwever, the xygen is chemically lcked in the frm f minerals r glass,s it is nt easily available fr use.Having real samples f reglith frm the mn made it pssible fr the researchers t create the simulated mn dust material used during testing.
The xygen extractin(提取) prcess is carried ut using a methd called mlten salt electrlysis(熔盐电解).This includes first placing the reglith in a metal cntainer.Calcium chlride salt is added t the mixture, which is then heated t 950 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the reglith remains slid.Next,an electrical current is passed thrugh the material. The researchers say it is this step that results in xygen being extracted frm the reglith. The study reprted that up t 96 percent f xygen in the simulated mn dust was extracted during the experiments.
ESA’s lng-term gal is t design an xygen-prducing “pilt plant” t perate full-time n the mn.The first technlgy demnstratin f the system is expected t take place in the middle 2020s.Beth Lmax,a lead researcher n the prject, said,“Being able t acquire xygen frm resurces fund n the mn wuld bviusly be hugely useful fr future lunar settlers, bth fr breathing and the lcal prductin f rcket fuel.”The researchers reprted that “as a bnus”,the prcess als results in the prductin f usable metallic materials.
ESA and the US space agency NASA are bth wrking n plans t return human beings t the mn.NASA has set a gal fr 2024 with the aim t keep humans n the mn fr lng perids.
