The idea that red means stop and green means go has influenced our lives in more ways than just traffic signals. We have been taught from a young age that the colour red means danger and green means it is okay to move forward. But why were those colours chosen for traffic lights in the first place? For something we have to look at every day, why couldn’t they have been prettier colours?
Well, it’s important to know that before traffic lights for cars, there were traffic signals for trains. At first, railway companies used red to mean stop, white to mean go, and green to mean warn. As you could imagine, trains ran into a few problems with white meaning go. For example, one train mistook a bright star for a white light and something unexpected happened. Because of that, railway companies finally moved green meaning go and used yellow to mean warn. And it’s been that way ever since.
Red has always been a colour that meant danger, long before cars were even around. This most likely started because it’s the colour with the longest wavelength(波长) so it can be seen somewhere farther than other colours.
But, believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Finally, highly reflective materials(高反射材料) were developed and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs, and school buses continue to be painted yellow.
So next time you’re impatiently waiting at a traffic light, don’t get so mad at them; they’ve certainly come a long way.
34. Which of the following colours meant go at first?
A. Red. B. Yellow. C. White. D. Green.
35. Why does red mean danger?
A. Because it’s the brightest colour. B. Because it can be seen far away.
C. Because railway companies say so. D. Because it has the shortest wavelength.
36. What does the text mainly tell use?
A. How important traffic lights are. B. Which colour has the longest wavelength.
C. What red, yellow and green can be used for. D. Why traffic lights are red, yellow and green.
C
When something goes wrong, it can be very pleasing to say, “Well, it’s so-and-so’s mistake.” or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my mistake; the bus was late.” It is probably not your mistake, but once you form the habit of blaming(责怪) somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you start paying attention to how to improve the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.
Winners are great at solving problems. For example, if you were late because the bus was late, maybe you need to leave home early. Or, you might call a taxi or call friends for help when in need. For another example, if your workmate causes you problems on the job for short of responsibility(责任心) or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability. Ask to work with a different person, or leave this person with some simple jobs. You should accept that the person is not reliable(可靠的).
This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and wisdom so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and chances to develop their own ability. So, stop paying attention to “whose mistake it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.
37. According to the passage, winners .
A. have responsible and able workmates

A. blame him for his short of responsibility
B. find a better way to overcome the problem
C. tell him to find the cause of the problem
D. ask a more able workmate for help
39. When problems happen, winners take them as .
A. excuses for their mistakes B. difficulties to greater power
C. chances for self-development D. challenges to their workmates
40. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

In the past summer holiday, a group of students in Wuhan were asked to record their parents’ and their own emotions (情绪). Organizers started this challenge to help the students and their parents not lose temper (发火).
News about the challenge soon spread online, and many people began trying it. At the same time, however, the news led to lots of discussions, not only on anger itself, but on how we should control our emotions. Let’s take a look at what people say.
Some people think feeling angry is a common thing. It’s just like feeling hungry lonely or tired. What we should do is not to avoid it, but to find out the thing that makes us angry and try to deal with it. But anger specialist Isabel Clarke said on the Internet, “You can control your anger, and you should force yourself to do so.”
So which opinion is right and how should we teenagers solve our anger?
Being a teenager is hard, especially with all the schoolwork and responsibilities (责任). As a result, it is much easier for us to get angry.
If we can take a few small steps, learning to put out that fire inside us can become a lot easier.
According to the BBC’s advice website, putting our anger into something that requires creativity is an easy way to deal with it. So, the next time you feel anger building up, you shouldn’t lock it away. Rather than lose your temper, try expressing your bad emotions in an active way. Paint something, write a poem, sing a song or just go for a walk.
After all having emotions is what makes us humans. And without them, even anger, the world wouldn’t be as beautiful as it is now. But, we shouldn’t let them hurt ourselves or others.

It’s just like feeling hungry, lonely or tired.
After all, having emotions is what makes us humans. And without them, even anger, the world wouldn’t be as beautiful as it is now. But, we shouldn’t let them hurt ourselves or others.

【答案】例文
Dear Mr. Wang,
I’m writing to recommend Li Ming as our new monitor. I think he has some strong qualities for this position.
Li Ming is confident. He is not afraid of making a speech in front of many people. He is modest. He never minds doing extra work for our class. He is very organized and never forgets the things he needs to do. His favourite color is red because red stands for strength and strong emotion and it is good for mind and body. He likes music because music can make people feel relaxed. Several math contests have been won since last year. We are all proud of him.
I think Li Ming is the most suitable person to be our monitor. I hope you can agree with me.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Gang
