My dad works with green technology.Last summer,he was sent to a small town called Gaviotas in Colombia. He decided to take me with him.At first I wasn’t too keen. What was I going to do in the middle of nowhere,in a country where I couldn’t even speak the language? And anyway, what was so special about Gaviotas?
My dad told me that Gaviotas was an example of how people could live without destroying the environment. This got me a bit more interested,so I did some research.I found out that Gaviotas was founded in 1971 by a group of scientists and artists. They had decided to build a completely new town in the remote, warworn eastern Colombia where there was nothing.
When we eventually arrived,I was amazed by how green it was and my dad explained that they had replanted millions of trees. There were many different species of birds flying about and flowers everywhere.I was beginning to like it.My dad’s contact in Gaviotas has a son exactly of my age,Ricardo. He speaks really good English and so for the next week he was my guide to this amazing place. The first thing he pointed out to me was all the fantastic technology that had been invented there.Ricardo told me that they produce 70% of all their own energy and food with very little waste. The trees they planted more than compensate for any greenhouse gases they emit(排放).
But Gaviotas is not a success just because of its green technology,it’s also a model for how people can live more peacefully together.Every family gets a free home, free meals and free schooling for the children. So there is no poverty.People get on well with each other. It’s fantastic.
I was really sad to leave Gaviotas, but now I have a new dream:I hope that 20 years from now,we’ll all be living in towns like Gaviotas.
24.What can best describe the author’s feeling at the very beginning?

C.Modern but polluted. D.Small but advanced.
答案 A

26.Where can you find the evidence to show that Gaviotas is a green town?
A.Paragraph 2. B.Paragraph 3.
C.Paragraph 4. D.Paragraph 5.

B.How people in Gaviotas avoid waste.
C.Gaviotas is famous for its green technology.

If the three Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) is a guideline to save the planet, garbagesorting is where the efforts start.Since May 1,Beijing has started to carry out mandatory garbagesorting in new efforts to better protect the environment.Under the new regulation, residents are required to classify household waste into four categories:kitchen, recyclable, hazardous and other waste.People who fail to sort their garbage properly can be fined from 50 to 200 yuan, reported Xinhua.
Some residential communities in Beijing have introduced rewards to encourage residents to sort their garbage.According to Xinhua, residents can earn points by classifying their domestic waste correctly and then exchange the points they accumulate for daily necessities such as soap.
Garbage sorting practices have reached over 70 percent of housing estates in 18 cities, including Shanghai, Xiamen and Hangzhou, according to the Ministry of Housing and UrbanRural Development.Shanghai first enacted a mandatory garbagesorting regulation in July 2019 and has had a 90 percent compliance(服从) rate among its housing estates.
According to a report by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 percent of the public believe that garbagesorting is important for the protection of the environment. However, garbagesorting is still a big problem in China.Only 30 percent of participants said they think they are completely sorting their waste, the report noted.According to Xinhua,it’s partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste. Also, some previous garbage regulations didn’t include fines for people who failed to obey them.
“It’s a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage sorting,” Liu Jianguo,a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily,“Aside from China, many countries like Germany,Spain and Britain, also ask people to sort waste into specific categories. In Japan, there is a fixed time for the sorting of each kind of garbage and littering.”

A.It’s difficult to carry out garbagesorting in China.
B.Some laws in garbagesorting are needed.
C.People in developed countries can better sort the garbage.
D.We should learn from Japan.
答案 B

A.Garbage Sorting,a New Start in China
B.New Regulations in Beijing
C.Argument on Garbage Sorting
D.How to Sort Domestic Garbage
答案 A
根据第一段中的“Since May 1,Beijing has started to carry out mandatory garbagesorting in new efforts to better protect the environment.”

A group of scientists have studied the fossil(化石) of an animal, called Kongonaphon kely, which they said is an ancestor of the dinosaurs. The fourlegged animal can even fit in man’s hand.Scientists say it lived about 237 million years ago in what is now Madagascar,an island country off the east coast of Africa.
The researchers believe the animal came before dinosaurs. The study notes that much remains unknown about the history of dinosaurs and their winged relatives, pterosaurs(翼龙).Scientist Christian Kammerer of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, who led the study, told a news agency that based on the body size suggested by the fossil,“we argue that dinosaurs and pterosaurs evolved from a modestsized ancestor.”John Flynn,of New York’s American Museum of Natural History, was a cowriter of the study. He said the Kongonaphon’s teeth showed signs of use in a way that suggested this animal ate insects.
The team examining the fossil also found evidence of soft skin coverings, including feathers.Usually, animals use fur or feathers to hide themselves from enemies or help to hunt for food.To some, fur or feathers even protect them from insect bites. But the researchers said feathers of Kongonaphon would have been especially important in the extreme climate of the early part of the Mesozoic Era(中生代).The days were hot,and the nights cold.
“Some of these things would have been quite cute animals,” said Kammerer on the light side.Looking like a dinosaur that could be held in a person’s cupped hands,it “would probably make a great pet”.Of course,no humans were around when Kongonaphon was wandering in the wild, jumping around with its strong legs and hunting for food,Kammerer said.
32.What do the researchers find about Kongonaphon?
A.It has no wings.
B.It lived in unknown places.
C.It is very tiny in size.
D.It lives longer than dinosaurs.

33.What is the function of Kongonaphon’s feathers?
A.To protect it from insect bites.
B.To help control body temperature.
C.To assist it to hunt for food.
D.To defend against enemies’ attack.
34.What is Kammerer’s tone in the last paragraph?
A.Academic. B.Humorous.
C.Surprised. D.Excited.
35.Why does the author write the text?
A.To introduce an ancient animal.
B.To compare different kinds of dinosaurs.
C.To explore the history of dinosaurs.
D.To share a discovery about origins of dinosaurs.
答案 D

I suppose everybody around the world has been somehow affected by COVID19,and I’m no exception. The greatest influence on me is that the college entrance exam this year in China has been postponed to July.As a result,my summer vacation won’t begin until midJuly and I have to reschedule my trip to your city.If the virus is under control soon,I will go and see you next year, during my first college summer vacation.I wish it would be convenient for you to meet me then.
Please stay safe and stay in contact.
Yours,
Li Hua
