It was a cld night in Washingtn, D.C., and I was heading back t the htel when a man came t me. He asked if I wuld give him sme mney s he culd get smething t eat. I’d read the signs: “Dn’t give mney t panhandlers (乞丐).” S I shk my head and kept walking.
I wasn’t prepared fr a reply, but he said, “I really am hmeless and I really am hungry! Yu can cme with me and watch me eat!” But I kept n walking.
I culdn’t frget what happened t me that day fr the rest f the week. I had mney in my
pcket and it wuldn’t have killed me t hand ver a dllar r tw even if he had been lying. On a very cld night, n less, I thught the wrst f a fellw human being. Flying back t Anchrage, I still culdn’t help thinking f him.
I was the writer f a weekly garden clumn (专栏)at The Anchrage Daily News. One day, ut f the blue, I came up with an idea. Bean’s Cafe, the sup kitchen in Anchrage, feeds
hundreds f hungry peple every day. Why nt try t get all my readers t plant ne rw in their
gardens fr Bean’s? Plant a rw and take it dwn t Bean’s. Clean and simple.
We didn’t keep recrds back then, but the idea began t take ff. Peple wuld call me when they tk smething in. Thse wh nly grew flwers gave them away. Fd fr the spirit.
In 1995 , the Garden Writers Assciatin f America ( GWAA) held their meeting in Anchrage and alter learning f Anchrage’s prgram, Plant a Rw fr Bean’s became Plant a Rw fr the Hungry. The idea was t have every member f the Garden Writers Assciatin f America write r talk abut planting a rw fr the hungry.
As mre and mre peple started wrking with the prgram, many cmpanies gave free seed t custmers and had the lg (商标)seen in public.
Garden editr Jan Jacksn raised mre than 30,000 punds f fruits and vegetables her first year, and shwed the public hw the prgram culd really wrk. Texas fruit farms gave away fd t their lcal fd bank alter hearing abut Plant a Rw. Tday the prgram cntinues t grw.
I am shcked that millins f Americans are threatened by hunger. If every gardener in
America - and we’re seventy millin strng - plants ne rw fr the hungry, we can make a difference in the number f neighbrs wh dn’t have enugh t eat. Maybe then I will stp feeling guilty (愧 疚) abut walking past a hungry man I culd have helped.
    34. Did the writer give mney t the hungry man?
    35. Hw did the writer feel alter flying back t Anchrage?
    36. What did the writer try t get his readers t d?
