It’s pssible that yur phne’s face-unlck might finally be able t wrk while yu’re wearing a mask. Researchers have fund that facial recgnitin algrithms (算法) are getting better at recgnizing faces in masks, accrding t data published n Tuesday by the Natinal Institute fr Standards and Technlgy (NIST). Using independent testing f mre than 150 separate facial recgnitin algrithms, the new reprt suggests masks may nt be as big a prblem fr facial recgnitin systems as initially thught.
When NIST first examined masks’ effect n facial recgnitin in July 2020, it fund that algrithms weren’t great at identifying faces with masks. “Face recgnitin can make errrs, which can implicate peple fr crimes they haven’t cmmitted,” writes the Electrnic Frntier Fundatin (EFF). “It is particularly bad at recgnizing African Americans and ther ethnic minrities, wmen, and yung peple.” But the pandemic has given develpers plenty f time t fcus n the mask prblem, and NIST’s data shws that facial recgnitin algrithms are getting better at wrking with masked faces. “After the pandemic, sme develpers have submitted algrithms which shw significantly imprved accuracy and are nw amng the mst accurate in ur test,” the reprt reads. NIST’s public ranking fr facial recgnitin tests bears ut this reprt. Eight different algrithms nw hld false rates belw 0.05 percent.
Nevertheless, there remain a number f limitatins t the study. NIST researchers did nt emply actual images f masked faces. Instead, they applied masks digitally t ensure cnsistency acrss the sample. As a result, “We were nt able t get a thrugh simulatin (模仿) f the endless variatins in clr, design, shape, texture, and ways masks can be wrn,” the reprt states. The digital mask was a blue surgical mask cvering the full width f the face, but testers nted that perfrmance varied cnsiderably depending n hw high the mask was placed n the face.
Recgnizing masked faces with facial recgnitin systems used t be thught as _______.
    A. effective B. impssibleC. easy D. challenging

    B. The design f a mask makes n difference t facial recgnitin.
    C. Facial recgnitin failure rates were quite lw at the beginning.
    D. The researchers adpted real surgical masks t ensure the accuracy.

    A. Limitatins f Facial Recgnitin Sftware

Many livestck farmers (牧场主) in the western wrld are becming wrried by a lnger-term threat t their incme frm the grwing ppularity f vegetarian (素食的) diets. Here cmes the questin whether t eat meat r nt. Befre airing ur view, we shuld cnsider seriusly the three reasns that vegetarians give fr refusing animal prducts.
The easiest pint t argue against is that eating meat is unhealthy. Nthing is healthier than a varied diet, including fiber, vegetable, fruit and meat. Althugh studies shw that eating red and prcessed meat may raise the risk f sme cancers, it is imprtant nt t verstate the effect. This week, fr example, Cancer Research UK reprted that eating an extra piece f bacn every day raised the risk f bwel cancer by 20 per cent. But that means just eight extra (largely curable) cases in every 10,000 peple ver six years.
Our treatment f farm animals is an issue that vegetarians find mre trubling. A cmmn view is that raising animals in a small area cause unacceptable suffering. In this regard, agricultural authrities shuld take up the respnsibility t enfrce welfare standards that give each animal enugh space t stand and mve arund cmfrtably. Als, cnsumers have an imprtant rle t play in imprving cnditins fr farm animals. Fr example, the dislike f “battery hens”led t an EU ban in 2012 n keeping chickens in barren cages.
The envirnmental impact f livestck farming is its greatest prblem in a century. The UN Fd and Agriculture Organizatin estimates that farmed animals accunt fr 14.5% f greenhuse gas emissin. Althugh changes in grazing(放牧)practices culd substantially reduce the envirnmental impact f livestck farming, it will always use mre resurces than prducing the same number f calries frm plant crps. Meat prductin shuld fcus n the wrld’s traditinal grasslands, withut taking up new land.
    12. Which f the fllwing is NOT the reasn against animal prducts given by vegetarians?
    A. It harms human health.
    B. It causes animal suffering.
    C. It damages the envirnment.
    D. It threatens the incme f farmers.
    13. Why des the authr mentin the reprt frm Cancer Research UK in paragraph 2?
    A. T prve that eating t much meat is unhealthy.
    B. T persuade peple ut f eating t much meat.
    C. T shw that eating meat is nt as unhealthy as vegetarians think.
    D. T present the fact that eating t much bacn may cause cancer.
    14. What’s the authr’s attitude twards raising animals in a small area?
    A. Favrable.B. Negative.C. Indifferent. D. Unclear.
    15. What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
    A. The changes in feeding practices.
    B. The challenges that livestck farming faces.
    C. The negative effects f livestck farming n the envirnment.
    D. The measures t reduce the envirnmental impact f livestck farming.
