Night
Night has fallen ver the cuntryside. A red mn was rising slwly behind the trees, and there were hardly any stars in the sky. In this vast night the cld and dew descended. I sat at the pen windw and watched the night, hearing nly the summer wind. Althugh I can't see the red and blue flwers, I knw where they are. The silver Charles River glistened in the distant meadw. Frm the wden bridge came the clattering f hrses. Then everything was silent except the cnstant wind f the summer night. Smetimes I culd nt tell whether it was the wind r the sund f the neighburing sea. The village clck struck, and I felt I was nt alne.
Hw different it is in the city at night! It was late at night and the crwd had dispersed. Yu g ut n the balcny and lie dwn in the cl and dewy night, as if yu cvered yurself with it as a clak. Belw the balcny was the wded walkway, like an unfathmable black bay int which the ethereal spirit plunged and flated away with sme belved spirit in its embrace. The streetlights were still burning everywhere alng the lng street. Peple passed under lamps, dragging shadws f all shapes, nw shrinking, nw lengthening, and then disappearing int the darkness; At the same time, a new shadw suddenly appeared behind the traveller, and passed in frnt f him like the wings f a windmill. The irn gates f the park clattered shut, and ftsteps and lud vices were heard; A hubbub; A drunken brawl; A fire alarm; Then silence returned. S, at last, the city sleeps, and we can see the night. The belated mn peeped ut frm behind the rf and fund n ne t welcme her. The mnlight fell in pieces here and there n the squares and the pen Spaces f the streets - angular as white marble.
Rush
Swallws may have gne, but there is a time f return; willw trees may have died back, butthere is a time f regreening; peach blssms may have fallen, but they will blm again. Nw, yu the wise, tell me, why shuld ur days leave us, never t return? - If they had been stlenby smene, wh culd it be? Where culd he hide them? If they had made the escapethemselves, then where culd they stay at the mment?
I dn't knw hw many days I have been given t spend, but I d feel my hands are gettingempty. Taking stck silently, I find that mre than eight thusand days have already slid awayfrm me. Like a drp f water frm the pint f a needle disappearing int the cean, my daysare dripping int the stream f time, sundless, traceless. Already sweat is starting n myfrehead, and tears welling up in my eyes.
Thse that have gne have gne fr gd, thse t cme keep cming; yet in between, hwswift is the shift, in such a rush? When I get up in the mrning, the slanting sun marks itspresence in my small rm in tw r three blngs. The sun has feet, lk, he is treading n, lightly and furtively; and I am caught, blankly, in his revlutin. Thus--the day flws awaythrugh the sink when I wash my hands, wears ff in the bwl when I eat my meal, andpasses away befre my day-dreaming gaze as reflect in silence. I can feel his haste nw, s Ireach ut my hands t hld him back, but he keeps flwing past my withhlding hands. In theevening, as I lie in bed, he strides ver my bdy, glides past my feet, in his agile way. Themment I pen my eyes and meet the sun again, ne whle day has gne. I bury my face inmy hands and heave a sigh. But the new day begins t flash past in the sigh.
What can I d, in this bustling wrld, with my days flying in their escape? Nthing but thesitate, t rush. What have I been ding in that eight-thusand-day rush, apart frmhesitating? Thse bygne days have been dispersed as smke by a light wind, r evapratedas mist by the mrning sun. What traces have I left behind me? Have I ever left behind anygssamer traces at all? I have cme t the wrld, stark naked; am I t g back, in a blink, inthe same stark nakedness? It is nt fair thugh: why shuld I have made such a trip frnthing!
Yu the wise, tell me, why shuld ur days leave us, never t return?

"On the 14th f March, at a quarter t three in the afternn, the greatest living thinker ceasedt think. He had been left alne fr scarcely tw minutes, and when we came back we fundhim in his armchair, peacefully gne t sleep-but frever.
"An immeasurable lss has been sustained bth by the militant prletariat f Eurpe andAmerica, and by histrical science, in the death f this man. The gap that has been left by thedeparture f this mighty spirit will sn enugh make itself felt.
"Just as Darwin discvered the law f develpment f rganic nature, s Marx discvered thelaw f develpment f human histry: the simple fact, hithert cncealed by an vergrwthf idelgy, that mankind must first f all eat, drink, have shelter and clthing, befre it canpursue plitics, science, art, religin, etc.; that therefre the prductin f the immediatematerial means f subsistence and cnsequently the degree f ecnmic develpmentattained by a given peple r during a given epch frm the fundatin upn which the stateinstitutins, the legal cnceptins, art, and even the ideas n religin, f the peplecncerned have been evlved, and in the light f which they must, therefre, be explained, instead f vice versa, as had hithert been the case.
"But that is nt all. Marx als discvered the special law f mtin gverning the present-daycapitalist mde f prductin and the burgeis sciety that this mde f prductin hascreated. The discvery f surplus value suddenly threw light n the prblem, in trying t slvewhich all previus investigatins, f bth burgeis ecnmists and scialist critics, had beengrping in the dark.
"Tw such discveries wuld be enugh fr ne lifetime. Happy the man t whm it is grantedt make even ne such discvery. But in every single field which Marx investigated -- and heinvestigated very many fields, nne f them superficially -- in every field, even in that fmathematics, he made independent discveries.
