To see the world is one thing. To have someone to share it with is another. Indeed, travel becomes more interesting when you have a travel partner. A travel partner can be a close friend, a family member, a pal you’ve met online, or a business friend.
You can have someone to talk to
Traveling alone is fun, but wouldn’t you feel lonely? Having a travel partner can remove the feeling of loneliness. This is especially true if you can get a travel companion who is very familiar with the place you’re traveling to. You don’t have to ask any information from the locals, and you can increase the time you spend in the country.
    __________________________
One of the major headaches in traveling is the costs involved. You can’t simply ignore the rising price of hotels or plane tickets. You should also think about your daily needs, such as your food. Of course, you can’t simply go back without bringing any souvenirs (纪念品) to your friends and family. All these can ruin your budget. However, when you have a travel friend, you can have someone to share the expenses with.
You can meet a good friend
Having a travel mate is a good way of meeting a new friend or even a lifelong partner. You can never count the number of couples who actually found their way into each other’s heart while traveling together in another country.
You can have someone to watch out for you
When you’re in a foreign land, you’ll never be really safe. You don’t know the rules as well as the culture of the people. A travel mate will be perfect to remind you of your duties in the country and to watch your back just in case you get lost. So why don’t you find a travel companion now?
    Let’s find out how ...

If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.
Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers (慢跑者) and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a moderate pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries (动脉). Over time, this can cause serious injuries.
Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy (寿命), jogging a few times a week at a moderate (适度的) pace is a good strategy. Anything more is not just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”
The implications (暗示) of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and brisk (轻快的) walking may be better for us than “iron man” events, triathlons and long-distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, “You don’t actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn’t actually do too much”.
    28. The underlined word “strenuous” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “______”.
    A. hard             B. regular          C. practical        D. flexible
    29. The author presents some figures in Paragraph 2 to ______.
    A. suggest giving up jogging            B. show risks of doing sports
    C. provide supportive evidence         D. introduce the research process
    30. According to the scientists, why is too much exercise harmful?
    A. It may injure the heart and arteries.
    B. It can make the body tired out.
    C. It will bring much pressure.
    D. It consumes too much energy.
    31. What can be inferred from the next?
    A. No exercise at all is the best choice.
    B. More exercise means a healthier life.
    C. Marathons runners are least likely to die.
    D. Proper exercise contributes to good health.

    D
Hilversum is a medium-sized city between the major cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht in the Gooi area of North Holland, the Netherlands. Unlike most of the Netherlands, Hilversum is actually in a hilly area with the soil mostly consisting of sand. Once called the Garden of Amsterdam, it still attracts travelers to come over to cycle and walk through the surrounding forests. They visit it for a relaxing day off from the urban madness. For Dutch people, Hilversum is all about textile (纺织) and media industries, and modern architecture.
In history, Hilversum was largely an agricultural area. Daily life was marked by farming, sheep raising and wool production. A railway link to Amsterdam in 1874 attracted rich traders from Amsterdam to Hilversum. They build themselves large villas (别墅) in the wooded surroundings of the town. One of the families moving in was the Brenninkmeijers, currently the wealthiest family of the Netherlands. They moved in after big success in the textile industry and aided a substantial textile industry in Hilversum. But the textile boom lasted only several decades. The last factory closed in the 1960s.
The change to a media economy started in 1920, when the Nederlandse Seintoestedllen Fabriek (NSF) established a radio factory in Hiversum. Most radio stations called in the large villas in the leafy areas of the town. Television gave another push to the local economy. Hilversum became the media capital of the Netherlands, and Dutch televison stars moved into the leafy neighborhoods surrounding the town.
In the early 1900s, modern architects W.M. Dudok and J. Duiker placed hundreds of remarkable buildings in Hilversum. These modern architectural masterpieces (杰作) are so many that Hilversum almost feels like an open air museum. Dudok alone shaped most 20th century Hilversum and approximately 75 buildings in 1928-1931. It has wide international fame and is included in many architecture textbooks. The building has a remarkable shape and looks like a combination of “blocks”. Actually, one may start his journey of modern architecture by walking or biking the W.M. Dudok Architectural Route in Hilversum.
    32. Hilversum is different from most of the Netherlands in that ______.
    A. it has a large population
    B. it is cut off from big cities
    C. it has many beautiful gardens
    D. it is in a hilly area with sandy soil

    A. Building a railway link to Amsterdam.
    B. Helping its textile industry to develop.
    C. Constructing large villas for the poor.
    D. Assisting its agricultural industry.
    34. The beginning of the media industry in Hilversum was marked by the establishment of ______.
    A. a radio factory
    B. the medial capital
    C. a radio station
    D. a TV station
    35. What is known about W.M. Dudok’s Hilversum Town Hall?
    A. It consists of approximately 75 buildings.

    Dear Steven,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well.
Here are my suggestions. First, it is important to take a Chinese course, as you will be able to learn from the teacher and practice with your fellow students. Then, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible. Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs because by doing so you’ll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make more Chinese friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learn Chinese.

    Text 1
M: I didn’t see you driving the car recently. What happened?
W: Janis and I started cycling to work in order to save money on gas.
    Text 2
M: Can you tell me where you are going to spend your winter holiday?
W: I haven’t decided yet. Maybe I’ll visit my grandmother in Boston.
    Text 3
W: I’m going to the dentist’s, then the bank, and after that I have to prepare a presentation for the history seminar.
    M: You’ll have a busy afternoon.
    Text 4
M: So I’ve cleaned the living room, the bedrooms except for…
W: I know. The toilets! Don’t worry. I’ll clean them.
    Text 5
W: Do you remember our friend Walter Sullivan?
M: Yes, I remember him. He used to work with us, didn’t he?
W: That’s right. He was always late for work.
    Text 6
M: What have you been busy doing recently?
W: Exams are approaching, and I’m busy reviewing the books to prepare for them. I’m buried in a pile of books these days.
M: You’re too serious about your studies! What about going for a walk this afternoon?
W: I don’t have the leisure time as you do.
M: Oh, come on. Haven’t you ever heard “All work and no play make Jack a fool”? Do you want to become a fool?
W: OK! I don’t want to be called a fool. Let’s go for a walk!
    Text 7
W: Excuse me. May I meet Mr. Robbins?
M: Is that Mr. Robbins in the marketing department?
    W: Yes, it is.
M: Oh, his office isn’t on this floor. We are on the seventh floor. So you must go upstairs for three more.
    W: What’s his office number?
M: I don’t know it exactly. I only know it is next to the manager’s room.
    Text 8
    M: Hello.
W: Hello, George. It’s Victoria. How are you?
    M: Not too bad.
W: I’m just calling about the prices, from the three hotels, for the conference. Have you got copies of all of them?
    M: Uh… yes. Yeah, they’re here on my desk…somewhere.
W: Could you e-mail them to me?
M: Uh, I can fax them. I’ve only got hard copies. So, uh…
    W: OK, fine.
M: I’ve got to go to a meeting in about a quarter, so I’ll send them now.
W:Yeah, OK. There’s no rush. This afternoon is fine.
M: No, no. I’ll send them now.
W: OK. Then maybe we can discuss them later today.
M: Sure. I’ll be in the office all afternoon.
W: OK. I’ll come to your office this afternoon, then.
    Text 9
M: Isabella, how many people work for Rolls Royce?
W: Rolls Royce Group is a big company but our office here in France is small. Only four people: two directors from Germany, one engineer and myself.
M: So what is a typical day? How much time do you spend on the telephone and with e-mail?
W: Well, first of all I make myself a big cup of coffee. Then the telephone and daily affairs. OK, it’s not too bad but I have a lot of e-mails to write and read, so this maybe takes around 75% to 80% of my time.
M: How many hours per week do you work?
W: In France we have a 35-hour working week now, so I start to work at nine, have one hour for lunch and finish at 5:15. I even leave at 4:30 on Fridays sometimes.
M: Do you like your job?
W: I do like my job. I like working for a British company. And I feel like a member of the team rather than just a secretary. It’s a real pleasure to come here every day.
    Text 10
W: Good morning. My name is Julie Hartwell, and I’m going to talk to you today about your firefighter training program. The program lasts for three months. During this time, you’ll learn about ladder safety and some equipment. The college has over two acres of grounds, where we can create real fires for students to practice on — under safe conditions, of course. We will learn how to fight fires on trains, fires in buildings and fires at petrol stations. This is a very important part of the course because it helps to get used to working in very hot, smoky places. If you want to apply for this course, you must be 18 years of age or over, have a full driving license and be very fit. You must also be able to work as a part of a team and be able to solve problems in very difficult situations. The other thing you need to remember before applying for this course is that you will often be working when your friends are enjoying themselves. If you have any questions, please come and see me in my office, which is Room 116 on the first floor.
