REACHING OUT ACROSS THE SEA
Trade and curisity have ften frmed the fundatin f mankind’s greatest achievements. T cmplete the great map f the wrld was a strng passin fr the peple f early civilisatins. Marc Pl’s tales inspired Eurpean explrers t search fr sea rutes frm west t east. Hwever, merchants and explrers frm the East set sail frm east t west many years befre Clumbus first did.
In ancient times, silk frm China fund its way verland t India, the Middle East, and Rme,alng what became knwn as the Silk Rad. A trading rute acrss the sea was als extended alng the casts f the Indian Ocean, centered arund Ceyln(nw Sri Lanka). Here, merchants frm China and many ther places met t negtiate trade deals, which als led t mre awareness f each ther’s cultures. Over the centuries, further trading allwed mre explratin f the regins t the west f China,as recrded in Du Huan’s Recrd f My Travels in the eighth century.
Later, the Ming Dynasty further develped relatins with these regins. Between 1405 and 1433,seven large fleets sailed west n vyages f trade and explratin. These fleets were a sight t behld and were in a league f their wn at that time. Under the cmmand f Zheng He,they set sail frm the Suth China Sea acrss the Indian Ocean t the muth f the Red Sea,and then t the east cast f Africa. African ryal families sent gifts such as giraffes as gestures f friendship in return fr gld, silk, and spices. Althugh China withdrew frm further expeditins after 1433,these land and sea rutes remained active channels between ther cultures fr centuries.
T reach ut acrss the sea remains a strng desire tday. The ancient sea rutes travelled by Zheng He are being revisited with the 21st Century Maritime Silk Rad,which is part f the Belt and Rad Initiative.
The aim f this initiative is t encurage cperatin and trade acrss the histric Silk Rad areas, and strengthen the bnds between China and the rest f the wrld. Trading has grwn greatly in recent years, and will cntinue t d s in years t cme. China has invested billins in systems and services alng these rutes, which will help t greatly develp the whle area fr the benefit f future trade and cultural exchange.
China has als jined its friends acrss the sea n ther imprtant prjects. Althugh the ancient sea rutes f Zheng He have been travelled many times, there are still many ther places left t explre. In recent years,China has jined ther natins n several expeditins t explre the Arctic. Frm a scientific pint f view, there is an urgent need t study the Arctic in rder t understand climate change and its effects.
Hundreds f years n,and with the latest technlgy in hand, the need t trade and the desire t enhance relatinships will drive China t reach ut acrss the sea far int the future.

When peple talk f explring the sea mre, they usually mean expliting it. Sea explratin has caused many prblems and will cntinue t cause mre.
Mre explratin means mre pllutin. The Deepwater Hrizn spilled ver 200 millin gallns f il int the sea in 2010. Plastic pllutin is als bad, killing many birds and fish, and has even been fund in ur tap water.
Mining fr resurces is very damaging, especially in the Arctic. Because f climate change, there is less ice nw,which means we can lk fr mre fssil fuels further nrth. But if we burn these, the ice will melt mre and this negative cycle will cntinue. Climate change is warning us that smething is very wrng.
Overfishing is anther prblem. Whales and dlphins are als hunted fr their meat r fr s-called research. Althugh this was banned in 1982,sme cuntries are still “murdering” these intelligent creatures withut mercy. The sea is hme t life,nt human beings’ pssessins. It is huge, but it is mre sensitive than we think. If we d nt prtect it,future generatins will nt frgive us.

T truly understand ur planet,we must explre the ceans which cver mst f it. Oppnents may be cncerned, but sea explratin is imprtant fr ur future. Fr example, scientific research ships can help address imprtant issues such as climate change. We need t understand what is happening t ur planet s that we can take actin. Therefre, mre research is necessary.
Understanding mre abut the sea will als help us manage its resurces better. Lgging new species will imprve ur understanding f life n the earth. It may help us discver new medicines,as well as new surces f fd and energy. Accessing the deep cean may als help us t predict events such as earthquakes.
The ppulatin f the wrld is grwing and we need new resurces fr future develpment. There are prbably vast amunts f resurces under the sea and ice,nt just il and gas but als valuable minerals.
Of curse, there are still envirnmental risks. Hwever, these shuld be balanced with ecnmic needs. Hpefully,as technlgy imprves,we may have mre ptins fr managing this balance.
