Last year, Izzy Gldstein, 12, learned in science class that we can reduce air pllutin by using natural energy surces, such as wind and slar pwer, instead f gasline. This made her wnder what she and her schlmates culd d t help the envirnment. “Maybe if my schl gt a bike rack(架子), mre kids wuld bike t schl instead f depending n cars,” Izzy tld TIME fr Kids. Rather than ask their schl t buy a rack, Izzy and her friends decided t make a bike rack by themselves.
They came up with a design. They calculated hw much wd they might need. They measured hw lng the bards shuld be. They used pwer tls t cut them and put them tgether safely. And they did all this in their schl’s makerspace.
Makerspaces are wrkspaces where kids can learn t create bjects using technlgy, engineering, art and design. These spaces ften feature a mix f high-tech machines, such as 3D printers and rbtic kits(工具箱), and simple materials like clay and cardbard.
Izzy ges t the Harley Schl in New Yrk. It is ne f a grwing number f schls acrss the United States with makerspaces. Makerspaces are largely inspired by Maker Faires(创客盛会), which are events that give peple a chance t share their creative prjects.
