One winter mrning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving t wrk in Jhannesburg, Suth Africa. He nticed a haze(薄雾) hanging ver the city and it didn’t take lng fr him t realise that it was an enrmus clud f air pllutin.
At that mment, Chiwewe wanted t d smething abut it, but he didn’t knw what t d. He was a cmputer engineer and knew little abut envirnmental science.
He first did research n air pllutin and fund that it is the wrld’s biggest envirnmental health risk. He decided t wrk n it in a cperative(合作的) way. He talked t scientists, fficials, and engineers wh helped him develp a deeper understanding f the situatin, as well as an idea t imprve it.
Thrugh years f wrk, Chiwewe and his cwrkers frm Suth Africa and China created an nline air quality decisin supprt system. Based n histrical and real-time data, the system can accurately predict air pllutin and air quality, which can help peple make better decisins abut their daily mvements, as well as help fficials better manage their peratins.
Chiwewe learned an imprtant lessn—“a lessn we all need t take int heart if we are t wrk twards a better future. Even if yu’re nt an expert in a particular field, yur utside expertise may hld the key t slving prblems within that field,” he said.
