I am a parent, and I als have t struggle daily with my daughter's hmewrk. I can certainly identify with the ther parents' anxiety. Here, hwever, I'd like t speak as a teacher rather than a parent. I'd like t explain why, in my prfessinal pinin, American kids need hmewrk.
I teach bilgy at a high schl in Clumbus, Ohi. I have t teach scientific methds and scientific writing in my class. It's a lt t fit int ne shrt year, and I require quite a lt f effrt frm my students. I require my students t read ne chapter ut f their textbk each week, and t cmplete a shrt take-hme quiz n the material, s that I can spend mre class time n labs and ther hands-n activities, which are the best way fr students t learn. S, if I'm ging t ffer such activities in class, I need students t put in sme time and effrt studying utside f class as well.
Hwever, sme parents think their kids are getting t much wrk. One argument is t cmpare American students with thse in ther cuntries. Sme parents pint ut that students in many verseas cuntries are scring higher than American children, while being assigned(布置)less hmewrk. Japan was ften used as an example. Why, then, d they achieve mre? The answer cmes when yu lk at the differences in ur cultures and ur views n educatin. "Bats are extremely stupid in terms f hw cmplex they are," said Dan Riskin, a bilgist at University f Trnt, wh wasn't invlved in the prject. "They have a tail and shulders that can mve in all the ways that an insect can d, but then they have elbws and wrists, five fingers and thumbs that cntrl parts f the wings."
That's what the researchers at Caltech quickly learned when they set ut t build a bat-like rbt. S they simplified the design by just cpying the mvements f the wing's basic cmpnents: the tail, the shulders, the elbws and the wrists. Their device's wings are frmed frm a single super-thin film made f silicne(硅酮). Its bnes are made f carbn fibre, and its jints are 3D-printed plastic t lighten the lad.
Althugh nt every part f a real bat is replicated and the bat rbt may nt be able t d everything a bat can d yet, it's already helping scientists t understand hw real bats wrk. "Yu'll have a lt f truble trying t cnvince a real bat t fly the same path 10 times in a rw t see hw it mves its jints, but a rbt will quite happily d all f the experiments yu culd ever want," said Sn-J Chung, ne f the Caltech engineers. Diane Zhang, the daughter f a Red Army fficer, recently cmpleted her wn lng march in an effrt t understand the significance f the heric jurney and the cmmitment f her father, wh came frm a rich family and drpped ut f cllege t jin the Army.
"It was shcking t me. It was a jurney t rediscver my identity," says Zhang, wh has studied her father's diaries and letters and pieced tgether his jurney in rder t fllw his ftsteps.

Zhang cmes clser t fully understanding her father's cause when she reaches the village f Hadapu, a turning pint in Lng March, where the tired sldiers were greeted by the Tibetans with cheers and fd.
