    In this perid,Teacher will help t train the students’ reading,listening and speaking skills.
    In the Reading part,the students shuld nt nly understanding the whle passage,but als try t cmpare it with the reading passage n Page 26.Cmpare the ways that the writers used t describe the facts and feelings. After cmparisn the students will knw that the writer f the San Francisc quake described mre feelings. S then the students are asked t read the third paragraph with feeling. Reading with emtins is ften ignred by teachers and students. But it can really imprve the students’ understanding f the passage.
    In Listening part,the students will first use what they have learnt in the first perid t fill in the frm. Then they will listen t the tape several times t finish the task. This step desn’t nly prvide the students a chance t train their listening ability but als prvide them knwledge abut hw t prduce an earthquake plan,which is very useful and practical.
    Then the students will chse items fr the persnal earthquake bag. They shuld make gd chices as well as explain the reasns why they chse these items instead f thse. Like the previus step,this step als trains the students’ speaking and prvides them with sme useful knwledge.

    Step 1 Greetings
    Greet the whle class as usual.
    Step 2 Revisin
    T:In the secnd perid,yu learnt sme detailed infrmatin abut the Tangshan Earthquake. Can yu use fewer than five sentences t summarize the passage?
    S:Let me have a try. The terrible earthquake struck the city f Tangshan while peple were sleeping. Mre than 400000 peple were killed r injured in the quake. After the quake,peple fund nearly everything was destryed. But peple in Tangshan didn’t lse heart. They rebuilt the city with the help f sldiers.
    T:Quite gd.
    Step 3 Reading and Cmparing
    T:In the first perid,we als talked abut the earthquakes that happened in San Francisc. Tday,we will learn a passage titled “The Stry f an Eyewitness”,which is abut the San Francisc Earthquake in 1906.It was written by Jack Lndn,wh was a famus American writer.
    T:First read the passage carefully. While reading,please think abut the fllwing questins:
    (1)Hw did the authr feel abut the earthquake?
    (2)Hw did the authr feel abut the peple f San Francisc?
    (Ss read the passage.)
    T:Nw,let’s check yur answers.
    S1:The authr fund the earthquake shcking and hrrible,because the authr wrte,“Never befre in histry has a city been s cmpletely destryed.” “Nthing is left f it but memries and sme huses far frm the centre f the city.”
    S2:The authr fund the peple f San Francisc different frm ever befre,because the authr wrte,“Never in all San Francisc’s histry were her peple s kind as n that terrible night.” Peple became mre patient and understanding t each ther.
    T:Quite gd. But I dn’t think they are the nly answers t the questins. Yu can keep yur wn answers as lng as yu think they are reasnable and yu can find prfs frm the passage.
    Read the first paragraph in this passage. Then g back and read again the first paragraph f the passage n Page 26.Cmpare the ways bth writers give yu details abut the earthquakes. Try t finish the 4 exercises n Page 66.Yu may discuss in pairs.

    T:Nw let’s check yur answers.
    S3:I think the writer f the San Francisc in 1906 shws mre feelings abut the earthquake. Fr example,he wrte,“Never befre in histry has a city been s cmpletely destryed.”“Nthing is left f it but memries ”
    T:I agree with yu. Yu can see that the authr f the Tangshan quake in 1976 described many phenmena that happened befre the quake was cming. There were n wrds that expressed the authr’s feelings in the first paragraph.
    S4:Bth writers give similar details abut the damage caused by the quakes and peple’s bravery t face the realities.

    T:Next I will play the tape f this passage fr yu t listen. Please pay special attentin t the intnatin.

    T:Nw I will give yu several minutes t read the third paragraph with feeling.
    Step 4 Listening
    T:Up till nw,earthquakes are still difficult t predict. We can hardly avid an earthquake. But actually we can d things t reduce the lsses f an earthquake,and we have discussed that in the first perid. Let’s lk at the frm n Page 66 and have a discussin abut the earthquake plan with yur partner.
    (After several minutes.)
    S1:The first thing I must d is t pick “safe places” in each rm in my huse.
    S2:The secnd thing I must d is t stay indrs until the shaking has stpped and stay away frm windws.
    S3:The third thing I must d is t expect aftershcks and use extreme cautin when entering buildings.
    T:What shuld yu d if yu are utside?
    S4:If I’m utside in an earthquake,I shuld stay utside and mve away frm buildings,trees,streetlights and pwer lines. I shuld stay there until the shaking stps.
    T:What shuld yu d if yu are in the living rm?
    S5:I shuld stay away frm windw. Cruch dwn under a sturdy table and stay indrs until the shaking stps and I’m sure it’s safe t exit.
    T:What shuld yu d if yu are in the huse alne?
    S6:I must keep calm. Step twards the nearest safe place in the huse and stay there until the shaking stps.
    T:Next we are ging t listen t the tape and write dwn the three “things” that are mentined.
    (Teacher checks the answers with the class.)
    T:Then let’s listen again. This time yu shuld write dwn mre details abut each f the “things”.
    (After listening,Teacher checks the answers with the class. Play the tape again if necessary.)
    Step 5 Speaking
    T:Yu knw every family shuld have an earthquake bag,in which there are enugh things that yu can use in case f an earthquake. Here we have a list f pssible items fr the persnal earthquake bag. Chse nly eight things,which yu think are the mst essential,frm the list. They must last yu five days. Discuss with yur partner.

    T:Nw jin anther pair and discuss yur chices. Put all the things yu agree n int a final list. Discuss the ther items explaining yur reasns and trying t agree which nes are the mst suitable.

    T:Each grup shuld chse ne representative. Nw be prepared t present yur list t the class and give yur reasns fr each chice.

    Part 1:What the pster is abut and why.

    Questins and Answers abut Earthquakes
    1.What is the biggest earthquake ever recrded?
    The largest earthquake recrded in the wrld in the last 200 years was the 1960 magnitude 9.5 earthquake in Chile.It caused 5700 deaths and created a large tsunami. It is the largest earthquake t be recrded by mdern instruments and ruptured ver 700 km f fault line with slip f abut 20 m. It was the first real cnfirmatin that the whle earth rings like a bell after a big earthquake.
    2.What are freshcks?
    Freshcks are earthquakes that ccur up t days r weeks prir t a larger earthquake. Scientists are currently unable t tell the difference between freshcks and nrmal backgrund seismicity until the large earthquake has happened. Hwever,the fact that many large earthquakes d have freshcks,indicates that smething unusual is happening befre the large events and gives us hpe that ne day we will be able t detect what this unusual activity is.
    3.Hw lng des an earthquake last?
    Peple wh have just felt an earthquake ften ask hw lng it lasted. What they really want t knw is hw lng they felt the shaking. This depends n the size f the earthquake and their distance frm it,because earthquake waves spread ut as they travel,but als becme weaker. A magnitude 6 earthquake several hundred kilmeters away can be ften be felt fr 30-40 secnds. The actual duratin f slip n the earthquake fault is usually quite brief —just a few secnds fr a magnitude 6 fr example. This is because the fault rupture spreads very quickly (at abut the S wave speed),s the whle prcess f faulting is ver very quickly. During the very largest earthquakes,fault rupture can cntinue fr up t 5 minutes as the rupture spreads ver a length f say 1000 km. Fr these earthquakes very high levels f aftershcks mean that the grund can be felt shaking cntinuusly fr sme hurs.
