    This perid is the high light f the whle unit. It lays emphasis n reading and understanding.
    First the teacher shuld check if the students have mastered the new wrds and expressins by asking them t speak ut the sentences that they made using these wrds and expressins. This part can help the students t learn wrds and expressins by heart in a certain language situatin.
    Then in Pre-reading part,students are asked t discuss tw questins:What will yu take if yu are infrmed f a cming earthquake?What may happen befre an earthquake?In rder t answer the secnd questin,students can carefully lk at the fur pictures in the part. The part prepares students fr the Reading passage.
    In the Reading part,students will first listen t the tape with their textbks clsed. In rder t make this step efficient,the teacher will prvide them sme statements based n the passage. While listening,students shuld judge whether these statements are true r false. If it is false,students shuld crrect it. Then students will be given several minutes t read the passage silently. In rder t help the students understand the passage better,the teacher can prvide sme cmprehending exercises,including matching sentences,rdering events. At last students shuld divide the whle passage int three parts and write dwn the main idea f each paragraph. The purpse f this step is t train students’ ability f reading cmprehensin,which is a very imprtant skill.
    At last,students will d a speaking task in pairs. One acts as a newspaper reprter frm China Daily and the ther acts as a witness f the Tangshan Earthquake. The reprter is asking the witness sme questins abut the terrible quake. This part nt nly helps the students t revise what they have learned in this part but als prvides them with an pprtunity t speak in English.

    T:If an earthquake is arund the crner,there must be sme abnrmal phenmena. Carefully lk at the fur pictures n Page 25 and try t describe what yu have seen.

    S5:In the secnd picture,the dg is always barking.
    S6:In the third picture,fish are trying t jump ut f the pnd. Even the rats are trying t run away frm their hles. They are running nervusly.
    S7:In the last picture,the water in the well rises and falls,rises and falls fr many times. Peple can ntice cracks in the well and smelly gas cme ut f the wells.
    Step 4 Listening
    T:Everyne knws that an earthquake is very terrible. Tday,we will learn smething abut the strngest earthquake in China’s histry,which happened in Tangshan,Hebei,in 1976.
    T:First listen t the tape with yur textbks clsed and check whether the fllwing statements are true r false. If it is false,try t crrect it.

    S2:Befre the earthquake the peple didn’t wrry because they didn’t knw the quake caused the strange events.
    S3:Such a great number f peple died because the quake happened while they were sleeping.
    S4:Water was needed because dams and wells were useless.
    S5:The peple did nt lse hpe because the army came t help them.
    T:Very gd. During the quake many things happened. Number the fllwing things accrding t the rder that they happened.

    B. The walls f the village wells had cracks in them.

    S2:Yes. I was s lucky as t be ne f the survivrs. Even at this time,my heart is still trembling with fear.

    S1:Actually,at what time did yu knw that an earthquake was cming?Were yu warned f the earthquake?

    S2:Yes. Fr three days the water in the village wells rse and fell,rse ad fell. Sme husewives nticed that the well walls had deep cracks in them. A smelly gas came ut f the cracks. In the farmyards,the chickens and even the pigs were t nervus t eat. Mice ran ut f the fields lking fr places t hide. Fish jumped ut f bwls and pnds.
    S1:Then d yu still remember what happened during the quake?
    S2:Oh. At 3:42 am everything began t shake. A huge crack that was abut eight kilmeters lng and thirty meters wide cut acrss huses,rads and canals. Steam burst frm hles in the grund. The terrible earthquake lasted fr abut 15 secnds. After that,everywhere I lked nearly everything was destryed. Bricks cvered the grund like red autumn leaves. Many buildings fell dwn. T make things wrse,tw dams and mst f the bridges als fell. It’s impssible t travel. The railway tracks were useless pieces f steel.
    S1:I heard there were sme aftershcks. Did they cause any damage?
    S2:Of curse. Later that afternn,anther big quake shk Tangshan. Sme f the rescue wrkers and dctrs were trapped under the ruins. Mre buildings fell dwn..
    S1:Althugh yu have survived,yu have t live a hard life in the next perid f time.
    S2:That is true. Water,fd and electricity were hard t get. Life was very difficult fr us.
    S1:But luckily,yu have army t help yu.
    S2:Yes. The army sent 150000 sldiers t help the rescue wrkers. They rganized teams t dig ut thse wh were trapped and bury the dead.
    S1:Then hw d yu get water these days?
    S2:Water is brught t the city by train,truck,and plane. We peple in Tang-shan will try ut best t rebuild the city.
    S1:I believe s. Thank yu fr having answered my questins.

    Tangshan:The Deadliest Earthquake
    Fireballs and Animals Give Warning
    Thugh scientific earthquake predictin is in its nascent(初期的) stages,nature ften gives sme advance warning f an impending(即将发生的) earthquake.
    In a village utside f Tangshan,well water reprtedly rse and fell three times the day befre the earthquake. In anther village,gas began t sput(喷出) ut the water well n July 12th and then increased n July 25th and 26th.Other wells thrughut the area shwed signs f cracking.
    Animals als gave a warning that smething was abut t happen.
    One thusand chickens in Baiguantuan refused t eat and ran arund excitedly chirping. Mice and yellw weasels were seen running arund lking fr a place t hide. In ne husehld in the city f Tangshan,a gldfish began jumping wildly in its bwl. At 2 a.m. n July 28th,shrtly befre the earthquake struck,the gldfish jumped ut f its bwl. Once its wner had returned him t his bwl,the gldfish cntinued t jump ut f its bwl until the earthquake hit.
    Strange?Indeed. These were islated incidents,spread acrss a city f a millin peple and a cuntryside scattered with villages. But nature gave additinal warnings.
    The night preceding the earthquake,July 27th-28th,many peple reprted seeing strange lights as well as lud sunds. The lights were seen in a multitude f hues. Sme peple saw flashes f light;thers witnessed fireballs flying acrss the sky. Lud,raring nises fllwed the lights and fireballs. Wrkers at the Tangshan airprt described the nises as luder than that f an airplane.
    Earthquake and Quakeprf
    Sme cuntries,such as Japan,have a large number f earthquakes. Earthquakes happen very quickly and vilently. During an earthquake,there is ften a great nise first. Then the earth shakes terribly;many huses fall dwn;railwayy tracks break and trains run ff lines;a great many factries are destryed;thusands f deaths are caused,and many mre lse hmes. Besides the great damage and deaths caused by the earthquake itself,ther disasters such as fires ften fllw,mre building destryed and mre deaths caused.
    It is well knwn f the dangers f a pssible earthquake,and fr centuries man has been making researches n earthquake. Mre than 2000 years ag,fr example,a Chinese scientist named Zhang Heng invented a machine which culd detect earthquakes,and this machine is still used by scientists tday t detect and measure the strength f earthquakes. Nw we knw much mre abut earthquakes and why they happen,but we still cannt tell exactly when and where an earthquake will happen,and cannt stp it frm happening. S earthquakes are amng the wrst disasters in the wrld.
    N ne can stp natural earthquakes. Hwever,scientists can help stp earthquakes destrying whle cities and causing t many deaths. In thse areas where earthquakes ften happen,they recrd muntain temperatures and take phts frm the air and if anything starts t happen,they warn gvernments t be prepared fr pssible disasters s that emergency plans are put int actin t lessen the disaster,prbably saving many lives.
