StepⅠWriting an utline (10 minutes)
This part is t write an utline f a newspaper stry. The teacher shuld guide the students t finish this task. Ask them t read the instructins. And then answer the questins n the screen. Give them 2 minutes t read and think abut the questins.
T: We shuld write dwn utlines t help us rganize the writing. Tday, we will learn hw t write an utline. Please turn t Page 31. Read the instructins in bld, and pay attentin t sme questins I prepared fr yu.
T: OK. Time is up. Have yu finished these questins?

S1: Because an utline will prepare yu t write a better stry.
S2: A gd utline shuld have a headline, a list f main idea and a list f imprtant details.
S3: A headline can tell the reader what the tpic is, s it can attract the readers’ attentin since the reader may nt have bught the newspaper befre they read the headline.

China leads wrld in traffic deaths
EXPERTS say that rad traffic accidents are n the rise and China ranks first in the wrld in traffic death tlls. Wrldwide statistics shw that the glbal traffic accident death tll amunted t 500,000 in 2003, with the largest share, 104,000 reprted in China, fllwed by India with 86,000, the US with 40,000, and Russia with 26,000, said Duan Liren, frmer deputy directr f the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau. Rad accidents are the seventh leading killer in China.
Seven killed in carg plane crash
AN AZERBAIJIANI II-76 carg plane crashed in Xinjiang, nrthwest China, Tuesday, killing all seven crew members. N passengers were fund abard, said rescuers. The crash ccurred at arund 11:00 am n Tuesday near Urumqi Internatin Airprt. Abut 80 per cent f the carg has burnt. The plane was a charactered flight frm Taiyuan, Shanxi Prvince, t Baku, in Azerbaijan via Urumqi, capital f Xinjiang. The search fr the black bx is still being cnducted.
The teacher can read ut the examples fr the students ne by ne and asks them “What’s the headline? What’s the main idea? And what are the details?” By ding this, the students can master the structure f newspaper stries and are nt wrried abut writing an utline fr China Daily.
After ding this, the teacher can explain t students that newspaper stries and shrt stries are rganized very differently. Usually a shrt stry begins with small details and includes big details later. A newspaper stry just des the ppsite. Bth kinds f stries use paragraphs with main ideas.
The pint-f-view in a gd newspaper stry is bjective (i.e. it has n pint-f-view) while a shrt stry is subjective, (i.e. has a pint-f-view). A newspaper stry has n cnclusin; a shrt stry generally des.
Give the students 5 minutes t prepare the task, and then have a summary by asking and answering.

In fact this part is the cntinuus ne f the Speaking Task. That is, Speaking is the base f the Writing. The instructins have tld the students hw t write a pster and what shuld be written dwn. Ask the students t read the instructins carefully, and make sure they knw what they are ging t d. Give them 5 minutes t write. Pssible sample:
Step Ⅲ Prject (10 minutes)
This prject begins by asking students t review what they have learned abut earthquakes and hw peple have cped with these sudden natural disasters. It then asks them t apply that knwledge by making a checklist f things that shuld be dne befre, during and after a quake hits. The functinal item f the unit is reviewed as students are discussing and deciding the rder f their checklists. It is nt necessary r likely that students will number their checklists the same. What is imprtant is whether the sequence is lgical and each grup can justify, r explain it. Finally, the students must chse ne actin frm the checklist t discuss in mre detail.

Earthquakes are terrible natural disasters. Althugh we cannt avid it, we can survive by making preparatins. Here are the essential things yu shuld always take during an earthquake.
Yu shuld take a bttle f water. It can keep yu alive fr a lng time, if yu are trapped under the ruins. Take sme fruit, in case yu are hungry. And als take a trch light and a mbile. These can help yu keep in tuch with the utside wrld, and it is easy fr rescue wrkers t find yu quickly.
Dn’t put fresh fruit in the bag as they will g bad quickly and cause prblems.
Dn’t take mney, especially dn’t g back t take mney when the huse is shaking.
Yu may be caught in the ruins.
