Mst earthquakes ccur within the upper 15 miles f the earth's surface. But earthquakes can and d ccur at all depths t abut 460 miles. Their number decreases as the depth increases. In cmparisn with the ttal number f earthquakes each year, the number f disastrus earthquakes is very small
The extent f the disaster in an earthquake depends n many factrs. If yu carefully build a ty huse with an erect (直立的)set, it will still stand n matter hw much yu shake the table. But if yu build a ty huse with a pack f cards, a slight shake f the table will make it fall. An earthquake in Agadir Mrcc, was nt strng enugh t be recrded n distant instruments, but it cmpletely destryed the city. If a building is well cnstructed and built n slid grund, it will resist an earthquake. Mst deaths in earthquakes have been due t faulty building cnstructin r pr building sites. A third and very serius factr is panic. When peple rush int narrw streets, mre deaths will result.
The UN has played an imprtant part in reducing the damage dne by earthquakes. It has sent a team f experts t all cuntries knwn t be affected by earthquakes. Wrking with lcal gelgists and engineers, the experts have studied the nature f the grund and the type f mst practical building cde fr the lcal area. If fllwed, these suggestins will make disastrus earthquakes almst a thing f the past.
There is ne type f earthquake disaster that little can be dne abut. In certain areas, earthquakes take place beneath the sea. These submarine earthquakes smetimes give rise t seismic sea waves. The waves are nt nticeable ut at sea because f their lng wave length, but when they rll int harbrs, they pile up int walls f water 6 t 60 feet high. The Japanese call them "tsunamis", meaning "harbr waves", because they reach a sizable height nly in harbrs.
Tsunamis travel fairly slwly, at speeds up t 500 miles an hur. An adequate warning system is in use t warn all shres likely t be reached by the waves, but this nly enables peple t leave the threatened shres fr higher grund. There is n way t stp the ncming wave.
