Categry 5 strms are the mst pwerful and damaging f all hurricanes. Frightened peple tried t find family members by leaving messages with lcal radi statins. Red Crss spkesman Matthew Cchrane said abut 45 percent f the hmes in Grand Bahama and Abac were believed t have been severely damaged r destryed. U. N. fficials said mre than 60, 000 peple n the islands will need fd, and the Red Crss said abut 62, 000 will need clean drinking water.
The Red Crss fficials are sending $500, 000 immediately, Cchrane said. Bahamian parliament(议会) member Iram Lewis said he feared rising water wuld trap peple wh wuld be unable t cntact help as their phne batteries died. By Tuesday, Drian’s winds had slwed, making it a still very dangerus Categry 2 hurricane with wind speeds recrded at 177 kilmeters an hur. The center f the hurricane has nt mved t far frm the Bahamas.
Hundreds f thusands f peple in Flrida, Gergia and Suth Carlina were warned t evacuate(疏散) because f pssible flding caused by the strm. Als, several airprts in the area clsed n Tuesday, causing hundreds f flights t be canceled.
