M: Of course. Come in, please.
W: I’ve come to talk to you about my grade on my last paper. I want to know why I was given an “F”.
M: Well, yours was so similar to that of another student in the class, and I think that you’d not done it yourself.
W: I did work closely with my roommate Jean, but let me explain why. A week before the paper was due, I was too sick to do my research. Jean agreed to help me. But it was really on my own.
M: Well, you’d been given a month to work on the paper. Wouldn’t it be better to get ahead rather than to wait until the last minute? Each student was supposed to prepare it individually. I’m afraid my decision remains the same. However, if you’re willing to make an oral presentation about the government’s role in running the economy, I’ll give you extra credit.
W: Thank you. I’ll do that. But when?
M: My assistant Ms. White will inform you as soon as it is decided.
W: OK. Goodbye!

A. Introduce a class. B. Share experiences. C. Give suggestions.
20. Whom is this passage written for?

B 19. C 20. C
W: A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling left out at break because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her, and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around, maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends. But how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom — thinking about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile and be friendly. Offer to share something with or express your appreciation to them, invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” at lunchtime. If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help, and pretty soon you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.

A new exhibition on the living and working spaces of Spain’s greatest artist, Picasso, has just opened in the studio at the Fundación Mapfre at Paseo de Recoletos 23. It runs until 11 May with rarely seen pieces borrowed from his family.
Later this summer, the 400th anniversary of the death of the Renaissance(文艺复兴) painter El Greco will be marked with an exciting exhibition at the Museo del Prado at Paseo del Prado from 24June to 5 October.
How to go?
The widest range of flights is offered by EasyJet—from Bristol, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Liverpool and Luton. British Airways and its sister airline Iberia combine forces from Heathrow and London City. Ryanair flies from Manchester and Stansted; Air Europa flies from Gatwick.
Barajas airport is 13km north-east of the city centre and is served by frequent trains on Metro line 8, but the shortest underground journey is a bit complex with at least one change at Nuevos Ministerios station and takes about 30 minutes. The fare to any station in the city centre is ∈4.50. The airport express bus runs every 15 to 35 minutes around the clock; ∈5 one way. It takes 40 minutes to reach the city centre. A taxi takes half the time. A flat rate of ∈30 covers most of central Madrid.

When Emma first announced about a month ago that she wanted to cut off all her hair, I cried. Not in front of her, of course. In front of her ,1 asked why and then told her to find a picture on the Internet that she could show to a hairdresser.
And then I went to the shower and cried. I cried not because she wanted to cut her long hair, but because she wanted to “cut it all off like a boy”. For some reason, that was the straw (稻草)that broke the dam.
Emma hasn’t worn dresses since she was two. She hates them. Now, at ten, she’s usually wearing mesh(网状)shorts and a packers T-shirt or jersey(运动衫)一or something old and stained and acquired for free. When she’s “dressing up” she wears skinny jeans and a plaid(格子图案的)button-down with her black and green Converse high-tops.
I admit her fashion sense has always made me a little sad. When I found out I was having a girl, I ran home and painted the nursery two shades of pink while fantasies of girls’ weekends and shopping trips were dancing in my head .I’d teach her how to do her hair and paint her nails. I couldn’t wait to start the journey with my very own mini-me. But it turns out you don’t give birth to dolls, and instead of a mini-me. I got a completely separate and independent human being with ideas and dreams of her own. And yes, that made me a little sad.
It also makes me extremely proud, although I’ve fought hard against the label tomboy(假小子). I’ve always been in the pride of my daughter’s strong sense of self and amazed at how early it developed. 6tShe9s been refusing dresses since before she could speak!”
24. What was the writer’s straw that broke the dam?
A. Her daughter refused to find a picture on the Internet.
B. She had to pretend to be happy before her daughter.
C. Her daughter wanted to cut off all the long hair like a boy.
D. Her daughter wanted to try a different hair style.
25. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Emma’s hating of dresses. B. Emma’s present dressing style.
C. Emma’s spending on clothes. D. Emma’s changing tastes on fashions.
26. How does the writer feel about Emma’s fashion sense?
A. Sorrowful. B. Angry. C. Happy. D. Proud.
27. Which can best describe Emma’s character?
A. A girl that is not respectful of her parents.
B. A girl that is lost in the ever changing time.
C. A girl that is badly affected by her parents.
D. A girl with a strong personality and sense of self.
C 25. B 26. A 27. D

There is a popular saying in the English language: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Well, that is not true. Unkind words, namecalling or even the socalled “the silent treatment” can hurt children as much as being physically hit, sometimes even more so.
A recent study of middle school children showed that verbal (言语的) abuse by other children can harm development in the brain. The study was a project of researchers at Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts. Researcher Martin Teicher and his team studied young adults, aged 18 to 25. These young men and women had not ever been treated in a cruel or violent way by their parents. The researchers asked the young people to rate their childhood exposure to verbal abuse from both parents and other children. Then the researchers performed imaging tests on the brains of the subjects.
The images showed that the people who reported suffering verbal abuse from peers in middle school had underdeveloped connections between the left and right side of the brain. The two sides of the brain are connected by a large bundle of connecting fibers called the corpus callosum. This was the area that was underdeveloped.
The middle school years are a time when these brain connections are developing. So, unkind, hurtful comments from children or adults during this period have the greatest effect. The researchers tested the mental and emotional condition of all the young people in the study. The tests showed that this same group of people had higher levels of fear, depression, anger and drug abuse than others in the study.
The researchers published their findings online on the American Journal of Psychiatry’s website.
Parents cannot control what other people say to their children, but they can prepare their children.
28. Why does the author use the popular saying at the beginning?
A. To show the power of words.
B. To introduce an opposite view.
C. To prove the author’s argument.
D. To show ancient people’s wisdom.
29. What did the subjects have in common?
A They were hurt by unkind words.
B. They performed poorly in imaging tests.
C. They had their brain slightly damaged.
D. They experienced no physical abuse at home.
30. What will be discussed in the next paragraph?
A. Comments on the findings.
B. Approaches to further studies.
C. Suggestions to parents.
D. Different opinions on the matter.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The way we speak matters.
B. Verbal violence should be stopped.
C. Unkind words hurt the brain.
D. Words are worse than sticks and stones.
B 29. D 30. C 31. C

根据文章第一段的“Unkind words, namecalling or even the socalled “the silent treatment” can hurt children as much as being physically hit, sometimes even more so.(不友好的话语,名字称呼,甚至所谓的“沉默的对待”,可以如同身体上受伤一样伤害孩子,有时甚至更严重。)”
D
For people, who are interested in sound, the field of sound technology is definitely making noise. In the past, sound engineers worked in the back rooms of recording studios, but many of today's sound professionals are sharing their knowledge and experience with professionals in other fields to create new products based on the phenomenon we call sound.
Sound can be used as a weapon. Imagine that a police officer is chasing a thief. The thief tries to escape. And the officer can't let him get away. He pulls out a special device, points it at the suspect, and switches it on. The thief drops to the ground. This new weapon is called a Long Range Acoustic Device(LRAD, 远程定向声波发射器). It produces a deafening sound so painful that it temporarily disables a person. The noise from the LRAD is directed like a ray of light and travels only into the ears of that person, but it is not deadly.
For those who hunger for some peace and quiet, sound can now create silence. Let's say you are at the airport, and the little boy on the seat next to you is humming(哼唱)a short commercial song. He hums it over and over again, and you are about to go crazy. Thanks to the Silence Machine, a British invention, you can get rid of the sound without upsetting the boy or his parents. One may wonder how the Silence Machine works. Well, it functions by analyzing the waves of the incoming sound and creating a second set of outgoing waves. The two sets of waves cancel each other out. Simply turn the machine or point it at the target, and your peace and quiet comes back.
Directed sound is a new technology that allows companies to use sound in much the same way spotlights(聚光灯)are used in the theater. A spotlight lights up only one section of a stage; similarly, "spotsound" creates a circle of sound in on targeted area. This can be useful for businesses such as restaurants and stores because it offers a new way to attract customers. Restaurants can offer a choice of music along with the various food choices on the menu, allowing customers more control over the atmosphere in which they are dining. Directed sound is also beginning to appear in shopping centers and even at homes.
32. What could be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the effect of the LRAD?
A. It causes temporary hearing loss.
B. It slows down a running man.
C. It makes it easy to identify a suspect.
D. It keeps the suspect from hurting others.
33. The Silence Machine is a device specially designed to ________.
A. silence the people around you
B. remove the sound of commercials
C. block the incoming sound waves
D. stop unwanted sound from affecting you
34. What feature do spotsounds and spotlights share?
A. They travel in circles.
B. They clear the atmosphere.
C. They can be transformed into energy.
D They can be directed onto a specific area.
35. What does the passage focus on?
A. How professionals invented sound products.
B. Inventions in the field of sound technology.
C. The growing interest in the study of sound.
D. How sound engineers work in their studios.
A 33. D 34. D 35. B

It produces a deafening sound so painful that it temporarily disables a person. The noise from the LRAD is directed like a ray of light and travels only into the ears of that person, but it is not deadly.
根据文章第三段第四句“Thanks to the Silence Machine, a British invention, you can get rid of the sound without upsetting the boy or his parents."可知,“多亏了英国发明的静音机,你可以在不打扰男孩或他父母的情况下消除声音”,所以这是一种专门用来阻止不想听到的声音影响你的设备, 故正确答案为D。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段第二句“A spotlight lights up only one section of a stage; Similarly, “spot sound” creates a circle of sound in one targeted area."可知,“聚光灯只能照亮舞台的一部分;同样,一个斑斑点声音'在一个目标区域创建一个声音圈”,所以聚光灯和斑点声音的共同点在于他们可以被引导到一个特定的区域, 故正确答案为D。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。结合文章第一段最后一句话中的"...many of today's sound professionals are sharing their knowledge and experience with professional in other fields to create new products based on the phenomenon we call sound"可知,"今天许多声音专业人士正在与其他领域的专业人士分享他们的知识和经验,以创造基于我们所调的声音现象的新产品”,可知本篇文章是关于声音科技方面的新产品。故B项:声音科技领域的发明,符合题意。A项:专家们如何发明声音产品;全文并未提及专家们如何发明声音产品,不符合题意。故A项错误。C项:声音研究的兴趣增加;全文并未提及声音研究的兴趣增加,不符合题意。故C项错误。D项:声音工程师在录音室如何工作,文中只有第一句提到了声音工程师在录音室的工作,以偏概全,不符合题意。故D项错误。故正确答案为B。

Kids and Food: Advice for Parents
It is important for parents to know how to help their kids eat healthy. Here are a few easy ways:
Parents control the supply lines. ___36___ Though kids may keep asking for less nutritious foods, parents should decide which foods are regularly provided in the house. Kids won’t go hungry. They’ll eat what’s available in the fridge at home.
Say goodbye to “clean-plate club”. ___37___ Lots of parents grew up under the clean-plate rule, but that way doesn’t help kids listen to their own bodies when they are full. When kids feel full, they’re likely to overeat.
___38___ Food preferences(喜好) are developed early in life, so try to offer different kinds of food. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies. Parents may need to serve a new food on several different occasions(时机) for a child to accept it.
Food is not love. Find better ways to say “I love you.” When foods are used to reward kids and show love, they may start to turn to food when feeling worried or unhappy. ___39___
Kids do as you do. ___40___ When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example.

由该段标题“Parents control the supply lines”(父母控制着供给线)和下文“Though kids may keep asking for less nutritious foods, parents should decide which foods are regularly provided in the house.”(尽管孩子可能一再要求营养少的食物,但父母应该决定家里有哪些食物是定期提供的)可推知,设空处应陈述父母要决定家里吃什么食物,以及吃的频率。
由该段标题“Say goodbye to the “clean-plate club””(对“吃完俱乐部”说再见)和下文“Lots of parents grew up under the clean-plate rule, but that way doesn’t help kids listen to their own bodies when they are full.”(很多父母都是在“把碗里的东西吃完”这种规则下长大的,但这种 方式对于已经吃饱的孩子来说毫无帮助)可推知,设空处应陈述如果孩子感觉吃饱了就不要再强迫他们非得把盘子里的食物吃光,这样对身体不好。
根据下文“Food preferences(喜好) are developed early in life, so try to offer different kinds of food. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies.”(食物的喜好在小时候就形成了,因此尽量给孩子提供不同种类的食物。 故选A。
由该段标题“Food is not love”(食物不是爱)和文中的“When foods are used to reward kids and show love, they may start to turn to food when feeling worried or unhappy.”(当食物被用来奖励孩子和展示爱时,他们在担心或不高兴时就会求助于食物)可知,作者建议不要用食物作为奖励。
由该段标题“Kids do as you do”(孩子会跟你学)和文中的“When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example”(在教孩子良好的饮食习惯时,尽量做好榜样)可知,要想培养孩子良好的饮食习惯,父母首先得以身作则。
