Every morning I walk outside and bring in the morning newspaper. There was a time when every house on both sides of the street had a newspaper in the driveway. There was also a time when every house had a land- line telephone, but not anymore. Not for a long time.
My husband is less willing to accept the downward trend of printed-edition newspapers, as he has worked in newspapers since the age of 16. Even before that, he was what you would call an "independent publisher".
Recently, we were at a Chicago park with our grandchildren. My husband had a newspaper folded under his arm. He sat down and put the paper on the bench beside him. A young girl walked over, looked at the newspaper, picked it up and asked, "What' this?"
I thought he was going to faint. The color faded from his face. His eyes rolled back in his head and his legs were giving out. I rolled up his paper and waved it under his nose. The smells from the ink woke him up.
Some people simply love paper— the feel, the portability and the pleasure of piling them higher and higher until their wife cries, "Enough!" My husband was happy when he spent time with our youngest daughter and her husband. When they lived with us, they raced to pull the crossword puzzle from the paper every day. It's hard to do a crossword online. Pencil doesn't come off a computer screen as easily as you might think.
Now my husband will be very excited that I have found further proof that there may still be hope for the survival of print. I was chatting with a young mother who subscribes(定期订购) to the daily newspaper. I asked why she did something so conservatively. She looked shocked. "Because it's print!" she said. "I love print! When the paper didn't come one day, would you believe I called the main number to let them know and the lady said, 'Why don't you just subscribe to the online version?" She shook her head in disbelief.
My husband will be so thrilled that he might write this young woman into his will. I say we leave her all our piles of old newspapers.
    24. How did the author's husband feel when a girl asked a question in the park?
    A. Shocked B. Thrilled. C. Disappointed. D. Confused.
    25. What does the author probably mean by saying "his legs were giving out"?
    A. He was feeling tired and needed a rest.
    B. He was very old and unable to stand long.
    C. he almost lost his balance and became unconscious.
    D. He was annoyed with the girl and played a trick on her.
    26. What does the author intend to tell us with the example of the young mother?
    A. Many young people follow an old- fashioned lifestyle.
    B. It is inconvenient for the old to read online newspapers.
    C. Printed newspapers will be replaced by online newspapers.
    D. There are still young people who love printed newspapers.
    27. What does the author mainly talk about in the passage?
    A. The new rise of digital newspapers on line.
    B. A man's everlasting love for printed newspapers.
    C. The pleasure of looking through daily newspapers.
    D. A family's memory of reading printed newspapers.
    C
The well-known Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he/ she grows up.”
This is both encouraging and discouraging. The fact that we were all born to be artists is surely exciting. But the reality has proven that remaining to be an artist is a task that many of us have failed.
Fortunately, some people have seen the problem and want to solve it. Western educators have suggested that we introduce the concept of “STEAM” instead of “STEM”—traditional “core majors including science, technology, engineering and math—since the “A”, which stands for “art”, is just important as well.
And on April 11, China’s Ministry of Education issued a guideline. Colleges and universities are required to provide more art-related courses and students need to earn a certain number of art credits (学分) in order to graduate.
These efforts came after many scientific studies had found that art education helps students develop self-confidence and teamwork skills, as well as habits of mind such as problem solving and critical thinking.
It’s true that none of these skills target specific jobs. But as former US ballet dancer Damian Woetzel told The Atlantic, the purpose of art is “to give kids the tools to become adults who are creative, adaptable and expressive— capable of having their eyes and ears and senses alive And we can now see how we lost track of our born “artist self” on our way to growing up: we failed to keep our capabilities to see, hear and feel, and became blind, deaf and insensitive adults.
Hopefully, art education can help turn things around.
    28. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
    A. To introduce a famous painter. B. To summarize the whole passage.
    C. To inspire us to be artists. D. To lead in the topic.
    29. According to western educators, why should “STEAM” be introduced?
    A. Art is as equally important as “core majors”. B. Western education is more useful.
    C. Traditional “core majors” are out of date. D. All of us should learn art in college.
    30. What can we know from the guideline issued by China1 s Ministry of Education?
    A. More students will major in art.
    B. More art courses will appear in all schools.
    C. College students will have to gain enough art credits to graduate.
    D. Art will become more important than science, technology and engineering.
    31. The passage mainly tells us .
    A. every child is an artist. B. bringing art to life is essential.
    C. life is full of art. D. artists are talented
    D
A world in which extinct creatures could be brought back to life came a step closer yesterday. Australian scientists have managed to extract a gene from a preserved sample of a Tasmanian tiger and make it active. The breakthrough has left them dreaming that one day they will be able to recreate the animal, which died out more than 70 years ago. And if it can be done with the Tasmanian tiger, it may also be possible to resurrect (复活) creatures that have been extinct for far longer.
“There used to be a time when extinction meant forever, but no more, ” said Professor Mike Archer. “We are now able to seriously challenge whether those animals that have gone for ever. What has been achieved is a very important step in bringing back those animals that are extinct. And while I think that technically it is still pretty difficult at the moment, we can now see the possibilities. I’m personally convinced that the Tasmanian tiger will be brought back to life in my lifetime.”
The breakthrough came after nine years of experiments by scientists at the University of Melbourne, who extracted a gene from one of several tigers preserved in alcohol in a Melbourne museum. They removed the equivalent gene from a mouse embryo implanted the tiger gene and then watched as the mouse continued to grow normally, suggesting the tiger gene had been activated.
Team leader Dr. Andrew Pask said it was the first time DNA from an extinct species had been used to “induce (引起) a functional response in another living organism”.
However, the animal’s entire gene structure would have to be revived in the same way to even begin the possibility of bringing the Tasmanian tiger back from the dead.
Mick Mooney, a wildlife officer of the Tasmanian Government, was worried that such developments could encourage people’s indifference to the protection of endangered species.
“If people think that we can bring animals back to life after they’ve gone, they will start saying that there is nothing to worry about because we can fix it up later.”
    32. What does the underlined word “breakthrough” in the l paragraph refer to?
    A. Scientists have recreated new animals.
    B. Scientists have resurrected endangered animal.
    C. It has turned out that some creatures would not go extinct.
    D. A tiger gene has been extracted successfully and activated.
    33. Scientists are carrying out the experiments in order to ________.
    A. bring extinct animals back to life
    B. transplant the genes of tigers into other animals
    C. find out what factors lead to the animals’ extinction
    D. find a new way to extract animals’ DNA
    34. Mike Archer thinks that ________.
    A. scientists now have no technological difficulty reconnecting extinct animals
    B. it’ll be a century or so before a Tasmanian tiger walks on the earth again
    C. humans have come closer in reconnecting extinct animals
    D. reconnecting extinct animals is impossible
    35. We can learn from Mick Mooncy’s words that_________.
    A. he thought it unnecessary to worry about endangered animals
    B. his opinion is in contrast with that of the Tasmanian Government
    C. he thought people should be encouraged to protect endangered animals
    D. he is concerned that bringing extinct animals back to life may have a negative effect

    How to Feel Connected
It's easy to feel disconnected from what is going on around you in today's fast-paced world. 36. You can get in touch and feel connected, however, by following the tips below:
Consider why you feel disconnected. Knowing what is making you feel disconnected can help you choose the best ways to address it. 37. Ask yourself these questions: Are you keeping yourself occupied with work too much? Do you rely on electronic communication instead of face to face communication? Do you lack friendships that are satisfying?
Interact with people in person. Technology is a great way to stay in touch, but sometimes you need to spend time with other people in person. 38. You can also take steps to feel more connected by making small-talk with strangers who are sharing parts of your day.
    39.
Your loved ones could feel shy, so you may never know how to improve your relationship unless you ask the right questions. Asking them to open the doors can give you some insight on what you can do. Learning this information can help to strengthen your bond.
Show your commitment to them. Simply showing up and being there for your loved ones says a lot about how much you value your relationships. Putting in the time shows them that you are committed and want to stay connected. 40.
Show appreciation. A simple “thank you” goes a very long way. Unfortunately, it is something that people who are close often take for granted. Telling someone you appreciate their time, love, and efforts can strengthen your bond and help you to become more connected.
A.Ask others what they need from you.
B.Sometimes you can feel isolated and distant from the ones you love.
C.Be brave to express your love.
D.Reach out to people to schedule a time to get together.
E.Attending family events, or simply visiting someone once a week can help to strengthen your relationship and keep it strong.
F.Targeting your efforts toward those issues allows you to close that distance more effectively.
G.You can have a gift delivered to friends on special occasions.

It is my great honor to give you a speech on “How to Prepare Yourself for Senior Three School Life?” As far as I am concerned, there are three important aspects that you need to focus on throughout the last year of your senior high school life.
First of all, every second counts for Senior Three students. Setting a future goal helps you keep focused and stick to what really matters. Secondly, as our school life is becoming more and more challenging, not only must you work hard to acquire as much knowledge as possible, but you also have to foster efficient and effective learning methods and habits which will benefit you a lot in your study. What’s more, getting actively involved in class and reviewing what has been taught /what you have learnt after class are really beneficial to you.
Last but not least, working out every day and having a balanced diet can ensure your health./gurantee you good health. As an old saying goes, “Health is the best wealth”. Without good health, you could do nothing well. I believe we all can achieve our dream as long as we make enough preparations. Everyone, let’s take action now! Live our Senior Three school life to the fullest!
