Everyone’s at it, even my neighbors. I thought I might be the only person left in the world who hadn’t done an eBay deal. So, I decided to try my hand at online auction (网上拍卖).

Buying for beginnersSign up on www.ebay.co.uk. Most items(e. g. tables, computers, and books) ready for auction will come with a picture and a short descriptionothers may be marked with “Buy It Now” and have a fixed price. You can buy these right away.

If the item is being auctioned, you offer the highest price you are prepared to pay and eBay bids (出价) for you. The bid will be increased little by little until it goes beyond your highest bid, then you are emailed and asked if you would like to bid again. Auctions last up to 10 days and when they finish you get an email telling you whether you have won the item.

How to pay: Sellers decide how they would like to be paid and you need to check this before placing a bid as you might not want to post a cheque or postal orders. The easiest way is through PayPal, an online payment system that takes the money away from your credit card.

Selling made simple: If you plan to sell on eBay, it helps to include a picture of the item. I followed my friends’ advice and put up the items I wanted to sell for a 10-day auction, starting on a Thursday. This way buyers had two weekends to bid.

The big things in life: It’s easy to post a small item, but furniture is a big part of eBay and this has to be collected or sent by deliverymen. Check the ways of delivery before you bid.

    21. What is the passage mainly about?

    A. How to make payment online.   B. Ways of making delivery online.

    C. How to use an online-auction system.  D. Advantages of an online-auction system.

    22. After bidding for an item, a buyer ________.

    A. has chances to make higher bids   B. will get what he wants in ten days

    C. should make payment immediately  D. may check its picture and description

    23. The easiest way of making payment mentioned in the passage is ________.

    A. through a local banking system   B. through an online payment system

    C. by sending the money to the seller  D. by paying the deliveryman directly

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.

My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.

On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor café. We talked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?

The next day dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

    24. Why did the author feel bitter about her father as a young adult?

    A. He did not love his children.   B. He expected too much of her.

    C. He was too proud of himself.  D. He was silent most of the time.

    25. When the author went out with her father on weekend, she would feel         .

    A. nervous     B. sorry    C. tired     D. safe

    26. What does the author think of her father after her visit to Tucson?

    A. More critical.            B. More talkative.

    C. Gentle and friendly.       D. Strict and hard-working.

    27. The underlined words “my new friend” in the last paragraph refer to          .

    A. the café owner              B. the author’s son

    C. the author’s father           D. the friend of the author’s father

Email has brought the art of letter writing back to life, but some experts think the resulting spread of bad English does more harm than good.
Email is a form of communication that is changing, for the worse, the way we write and use language, say some communication researchers. It is also changing the way we interact(交流) and build relationship. These are a few of the recently recognized features of email, say experts, which should cause individuals and organizations to rethink the way they use email.

“Email has increased the spread of careless writing habits,” says Naomi Baron, a professor of linguistics(语言学) at an American university. She says the poor spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure of emails reflect(反映) a growing unconcern about the way we write.
Baron argues that we shouldn’t forgive and forget the poor writing often shown in email. “The more we use email and its tasteless writing, the more it becomes the normal way of writing,” the professor says.
Others say that despite its poor writing, email has finished what several generations of English teachers couldn’t: it has made writing fashionable again.
“Email is a critical new communication technology.” says Ian Lancashire, a professor of English at Toronto University. “It fills the gap between spoken language and the formal methods of writing that existed before email. It is the purest form of written speech.”

Lancashire says email has the mysterious ability to get people who are usually scared by writing to get their thoughts flowing easily onto a blank screen. He says this is because of email’s close similarity to speech. “It’s like a circle of four or five people around a campfire,” he says.
Still, he accepts that this new-found freedom to express themselves often gets people into trouble. Emails sent in a day almost exceed(超过) the number of letters mailed in a year. But more people are recognizing the content of a typical email message is not often exact.

    29. From what Baron says in the third paragraph we can see that ________.

    A. careless people use email more than careful people

    B. email requires people to change their native language

    C. professors in universities don’t need to use email

    D. people communicate by email full of mistakes

30.What does the underlined word “it”(in Paragraph 4) refer to?

    A. The poor writing.                  B. Email.

    C. The good writing.                  D. A new communication technology.

    31. In Lancashire’s opinion, email is a wonderful technology because _______.

    A. it can be useful all over the world  B. it is the fastest way to communicate

    C. we can express ourselves in a free way D. we can save a lot of paper

    32. This passage mainly shows us that ______.

    A. people should stop using email to communicate

    B. experts hold different opinions about email writing

    C. Americans only use email to communicate

    D. email makes people lose interest in English

    D

Part of the reason that English has grown as a world language is that it easily adjusts to (适应) change. However, this means that what one was taught as a child in school may be out of date many years later. When words or phrases change, it can make speakers feel “wrong” because they were taught that something else was “right.”

One example of this is a term connected to school itself. Today, it is common for people to say that they “graduated high school” or college. The word “graduate” has two common meanings. One is to mark off a series. The other meaning is closely related. As you move through school, you cross off a series of achievements: grade school, middle school, high school, and college. So, in a way, school itself is “graduated.”

So, when people used to speak of getting a degree, they said they “graduated from college.” “To graduate college” would have meant to mark it off by year — the first year, the second year etc. Similarly, “to graduate to college” would have meant to complete high school and move up to the next level.

But as happens often in English, when people understand your meaning, smaller words can disappear. “I graduated college” is now easy to say. This may distress people who were taught that you had to use “from” to be correct. But this is not the first time this phrase has been simplified. It used to be that you said, “I was graduated from college” instead of, “I graduated from college.”

You can't know what English will keep and what it will lose. Who could imagine that we would still say we “dial” a phone number when we now push buttons on our cellphone? Yet we know what it means.

32What do we know about the word “graduate”

    AIt has two similar meanings.

BThere was a change in its meanings.

CIt had nothing to do with school at first.

DIt got an extra meaning during its development.

33Which of the following is the newest usage of “graduate”

AI was graduated from college.   BI was to graduate to college.

CI graduated from college.    DI graduated college.

34The underlined word “distress” probably means “________”

    Achange          Bcorrect      Cworry       Dhurt

35What's the best title for the text?

    ARight or wrong?

BWords come and go in English

CEnglish is a very changeable language

DHow should English be taught in school?

    第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

36  You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying.     37    A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class.  38   Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material.  39  If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

40  You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

    A. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

    B. There are other methods that might help you with your studying

    C. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

    D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

    E. This will help you understand the next class.

    F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.

    G. Maybe you are an average student.
