One f the greatest cntributins t the first Oxfrd English Dictinary was als ne f its mst unusual. In 1879, Oxfrd University in England asked Prf. James Murray t serve as editr fr what was t be the mst ambitius dictinary in the histry f the English language. It wuld include every English wrd pssible and wuld give nt nly the definitin but als the histry f the wrd and qutatins（引文）shwing hw it was used.
This was a huge task, s Murray had t find vlunteers frm Britain, the United States, and the British clnies t search every newspaper, magazine, and bk ever written in English.
Hundreds f vlunteers respnded, including William Chester Minr. Dr. Minr was an American surgen wh had served in the Civil War and was nw living in England. He gave his address as “Bradmr, Crwthme, Berkshire,” 50 miles frm Oxfrd.
Minr jined the army f vlunteers sending wrds and qutatins t Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became ne f the staff s mst valued cntributrs.
But he was als a mystery. In spite f many invitatins, he wuld always decline t visit Oxfrd. S in 1897, Murray finally decided t travel t Crwthme himself. When he arrived, he fund Minr lcked in a bk-lined cell at the Bradmr Asylum（精神病院）fr the Criminally insane.
