One Saturday afternoon in June, in the busy streets of central London, something strange happened. A man was seen apparently floating beside a London bus as it drove about town. One of his arms was stretched out and was attached to the roof of the bus. This arm appeared to be the only thing supporting the rest of his body. The man waved to the crowds with his other hand and moved his legs. Was he really walking on air? How was it possible? It turned out to be the latest show from Dynamo, one of the world's most thrilling illusionists (魔术师).
This wasn't the first time Dynamo had amazed the people of London. Two years earlier, tourists walking by the River Thames were a little concerned to see a young man go down some steps to the edge of the river and look thoughtfully across to the other side. Was he going to throw himself into the river? More and more people gathered on the bridge to see what was going on. And to their complete disbelief, he lifted up his foot and stepped onto the water. He didn't sink! Then he took another step, and another, and another. Hundreds of photos were taken by the onlookers and the next day the newspapers were full of the fascinating story.
Dynamo is the stage name of Stephen Frayne, who was born in the northern English town of Bradford. He was attracted by street magicians as a child and wanted to become one in the future. Taught by his grandfather, he showed great talent in it. He combined card tricks with breaking dance and then made a name for himself. But now what everyone wants to know is: after walking on air and water, what is he going to do next?
4.How did Dynamo astonish the audience?
A.By floating on the top of a London bus.
B.By performing some quite unbelievable tricks.
C.By being attached to the bus with one hand.
D.By being a magician as a young boy.
5.What helped Dynamo gain his earliest fame?
A.Owning a special stage name. B.Walking across the River Thames alone.
C.Being the only one floating by a moving bus. D.Presenting an appealing combined trick.
6.Who inspired Dynamo to decide on his career first?
A.Some street magicians. B.His grandfather.
C.Breaking dance performers. D.The audience.
7.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Dynamo once was a great magician.
B.Dynamo's grandpa knows a great magician.
C.Dynamo's career is taking off.
D.Dynamo is the most successful magician at present.

Chicken is America’s most popular meat. Many people assume chicken follows a simple rule-of-thumb: Pink chicken turned white means “done.” It’s similar to how we cook other meats. But is this true? To study how cooks at home follow safety recommendations, researchers filmed 75 households in five European countries. From a random but nonrepresentative sample, they also conducted an online survey of nearly 4,000 households in the same countries that say they cook chicken.
Worried that chicken would dry out, most home cooks determined doneness by color and texture (口感) inside the meat, they found. Few bothered with thermometers (温度计), claiming they took too much time, were too complicated to use, didn’t fit in the chicken or weren’t necessary (although easy-to-use thermometers are inexpensive and widely available).
In additional lab experiments, the scientists injected raw chicken breast with bacteria (细菌), which cause millions of sicknesses, thousands of hospitalizations and hundreds of deaths each year in the United States. They cooked the breasts until they reached core temperatures ranging from 122 to 158 Fahrenheit, and they discovered something surprising. At 158 degrees, but not lower, bacteria inside the chickens’ cores was reduced to safe levels, and when cut open, its flesh appeared dull and fibrous, not shiny like raw chicken. But meat began changing from pink to white far below this, and most color changes occurred below 131 degrees Fahrenheit. Sometimes, the chicken’s core would be safely cooked, but unsafe levels of bacteria still existed on surfaces that hadn’t touched the grill plate.
So what are you supposed to do?
Dr. Bruno Goussault, a scientist and chef, recommends buying and cooking breasts and legs separately. Bring the breast’s core to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, he said, and the leg to between 168.8 and 172.4 Fahrenheit. If you really want to safely measure temperature for a whole chicken, insert a pop-up thermometer into the thickest part of the leg before roasting it, Dr. Goussault suggests. By the time it pops, the breasts will have long cooked. They will likely be dry and far from his standards of culinary (烹饪的) perfection. But you’ll be sure to, as Dr. Goussault says in French, “dormir sur ses deux oreilles,” or, figuratively, “sleep peacefully.”
8. Why didn’t home cooks measure temperature with a thermometer?
A. They could not afford it. B. It affected the taste of the meat.
C. It was not available in supermarkets. D. They thought it was too much trouble.
9. In lab experiments, when the temperature reached 158 Fahrenheit, the meat .
A. was free of bacteria B. still remained pink
C. appeared to dry out D. was reduced in size
10. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. The meat does not taste best when bacteria free.
B. The leg becomes fully cooked before the breast.
C. A whole chicken requires a higher temperature.
D. The thermometer should be placed inside the breast.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Food safety. B. Simple lifestyle. C. Cooking skills. D. Kitchen equipment.
D
According to the majority of Americans, women are as capable of being good political leaders as men. The same can be said of their ability to dominate the corporate boardroom(董事会). And according to a new Pew Research Center survey on women and leadership, most Americans find women not outstanding from men on key leadership quality such as intelligence and capacity for innovation with many saying they’re stronger than men in terms of being passionate and organized leaders.
So why, then, are women in short supply at the top of government and business in the United States? According to the public, at least, it’s not that they lack toughness, management talent or proper skill sets. It’s also not all about work-life balance. Although economic research and previous survey findings have shown that career interruptions related to motherhood may make it harder for women to advance in their careers and compete for top executive(管理的) jobs, relatively few adults in the recent survey point to this as a key barrier for women seeking leadership roles. Only about one-in-five say women’s family responsibilities are a major reason why there aren’t more females in top leadership positions in business and politics.
Instead, topping the list of reasons, about four-in-ten Americans point to a double standard for women seeking to climb to the highest levels of either politics or business, where they have to do more than their male colleagues to prove themselves. Similar shares say the electorate(选民)and corporate America are just not ready to put more women in top leadership positions.
As a result, the public is divided about whether the imbalance in corporate America will change in the foreseeable future, even though women have made major advances in the workplace. While 53% believe men will continue to hold more top executive positions in business in the future, 44% say it’s only a matter of time before as many women are in top executive positions as men. Americans are less doubtful when it comes to politics: 73% expect to see a female president in their lifetime.
12. What do we learn from previous survey findings about women seeking leadership roles?
A. They have unconquerable difficulties on their way to success.
B. They are lacking in confidence when competing with men.
C. Their failures may have something to do with family duties.
D. Relatively few are stopped in their career advancement.
13. What is the primary factor keeping women from taking top leadership positions according to the recent survey?
A. Quality B. Gender bias
C. Family responsibilities D. lack of support
14. The underlined word in paragraph 1 can be replaced with ______.
A. Respect B. obey C. follow D. lead
15. What do most Americans expect to see soon on America’s political stage?
A. A woman in the highest position of government.
B. More and more women actively engaged in politics.
C. A majority of women voting for a female president.
D. As many women in top government positions as men

Nordic Walking
Started in Finland in the early 20th century, Nordic walking used to be a summer training exercise for cross-country skiers. 16 In that year, a Finnish company invented a new wrist strap (腕带) system to make the present-day Nordic walking technique possible. Outside of Finland, Nordic walking has been well received in Austria, Germany, Norway and Sweden. 17
Nordic walking is great for people who are looking for a smart physical activity with maximum health benefits, combined with fun and convenience. Nordic walking takes fitness walking to a new level by adding poles to produce an incredible upper body workout. 18 Besides, it also takes stress off your ankles, knees and hip joints (髋关节).
19 Nordic walking is no different. For best fitness results and physical safety, ensure that you use only Nordic walking poles which have been specifically designed for this sport. Don't try to use skiing or hiking poles which are designed and meant to be for a totally different purpose.
When you walk normally and carry poles with you, it is called the “2-wheel drive”. As soon as you hold the poles properly and start using your upper body, you're now in the "4-wheel drive". Every step should begin with the heel touching the ground. 20 Just hold them tightly every time when they hit the ground, and let them go as they are drawn back behind your body, finishing up with an open hand.
A.Just remember to choose lightweight walking shoes.
B.Your hands should always be in a “hold-n-go” state with the poles.
C.As with any sport, it is always important to have the right equipment.
D.There are also many Nordic walking clubs that offer regular weekly walks.
E. This strengthens your arms, chest, back and makes your body more flexible.
F. The real breakthrough of Nordic walking as a practiced exercise came in 1997.
G. It is now progressing well into other countries such as Japan, Australia, the UK and the USA.
