The idea of “The Bookman” was born at the same time as Sam's daughter. An English teacher for 17 years, before that a journalist, Sam took parental leave to be at home with his new baby. “I was thinking what I can do to keep my brain ticking over, to maybe bring in some money,” explains Sam. “A glass of red wine later and I suddenly had it. I love books. Books have driven everything I've done.” Then he began to work as a bookman.

However, he didn't want to follow the standard book subscription model where everybody who signs up receives the same collection of books. Instead, he buys his books from independent booksellers and subscribers receive books that are selected just for them, depending on their own personalities. The model becomes a real hit and his customer base stretches across Europe, ranging in age from 4 to 95.

“The Bookman is all about sitting down with you and finding out what you like. It's not about what I like or what I think you should read. It's a personalised service.” Sam's consultation service is offered over the phone, by Zoom or through an email questionnaire.

During the pandemic (疫情), he offered free books to those who couldn't go out. “People in tough times are helpless, when they are starved of company, and desirable books are just for them. I want to do something that might make people feel better. Sam said. By the end of that first lockdown, he'd given out 350 books. Meanwhile, he got a lot back from it himself—lots of grateful cards and letters from extremely lovely people who were on their own and appreciated the company of a book.

Voice cloning is when a computer program is used to generate a synthetic (合成的）, adaptable copy of a person's voice. From a recording of someone talking, the software is able to then copy his or her voice speaking any words or sentences that you type into a keyboard.

Such have been the recent advances in the technology that the computer generated audio (音频) is now said to be shockingly exact. The software can pick up not just your accent—but your timbre (音质), pace, flow of speaking and your breathing. And the cloned voice can be adjusted to express any required emotion—such as anger, fear, happiness or boredom.

Voice cloning can also be used to translate an actors words into different languages, therefore potentially meaning, for example, that US film production companies will no longer need to hire additional actors to make sound-copied versions of their movies for overseas distribution.

Yet despite its obvious commercial potential, voice cloning has also led to growing concerns that it could be used in cyber (网络) crime—to trick people that someone else is talking. And cyber security expert Eddy Bobritsky says there is a “huge security risk” that comes with the synthetic voices. In fact, such a case was reported by the Wall Street Journal in 2019, with a UK manager said to have been tricked into transferring £190, 000 to cyber-criminals who used a cloned copy of the voice of his German boss.

Therefore, steps to deal with this new technology and the threats it brings with it need to be made. And firms around the world are in fact already doing this. Such companies can monitor audio to see if it is fake, looking for tell-tale signs like repetition, digital noise, and the use of certain phrases or words. Meanwhile, governments and law agencies are also looking at the issue. Last year, the EU urged its member states to make “significant investments” in technologies that can detect deepfakes.

While it may be commonplace, snubbing (冷落) one's friends can have serious impacts on relationships, and there are a variety of factors that may drive individuals to ignore their friends in favor of an electronic screen, according to a new University of Georgia study.

The study reveals positive associations between depression and social anxiety and increasing snubbing: depressed people are likely to snub their friends more frequently, and socially anxious people, who prefer online social interactions, might also exhibit more snubbing behavior. These people are really sensitive to their messages. With each buzz or sound, they consciously or unconsciously look at their phones. The device's various applications are key drivers contributing to this dynamic.

The finding also shows that agreeable individuals have a lower instance of snubbing in the presence of their friends. People who have agreeableness as a personality feature tend to show cooperative, polite and friendly behaviors in their interpersonal relationships and social settings. Though agreeable people may prioritize strong friendships, an exploratory study reveals they are also more likely to turn to phones in the presence of three or more people.

That dynamic may influence the spread of snubbing in the context of a work environment. “It's ironic (讽刺意味的) that while so many people believe that snubbing behavior is rude, they still do it,” Sun said. “A majority of people snub others, and in a group, it may seem OK, because it's just me, the speaker doesn't notice I'm using the phone. The number of people in a group can be one reason.”

Alternately, disabling or turning over a phone can indicate a show of respect for a situation and focus on a person. That, too, is a signal—I am listening to what you are saying and I am focusing on you.
