Agatha Christie was a mystery writer who was one of the world's top-selling authors with works like Murder on the Orient Express and The Mystery of the Blue Train.
Christie was born on September 15, 1890, in Torquay, Devon, in the southwest part of England. She was educated at home by her mother, who encouraged her daughter to write. As a child, Christie enjoyed fantasy play and creating characters, and, when she was 16, she moved to Paris for a time to study the piano.
Christie published her first book, The Mysterious Affair it at Styles, in 1920; the story introduced readers to one of Christie's most famous characters-Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Readers love Christie's stories because there are lots of puzzles for them to think about as they read.
Christie always wrote about places that she knew, like Torquay. But her readers are lucky that she was also a great traveler. She was married to an archaeologist(考古学家)and travelled with him to Syria and Iraq, where they worked at archaeological "digs". In the book Murder in Mesopotamia, Poirot looks into a murder at one of these digs. Christie also travelled to Egypt, the setting for Death on the Nile.
Christie was a famous play-writer as well, with works like The Hollow and Verdict. In 1952, her play The Mousetrap opened at the Ambassadors Theatre, which with more than 26, 113 showings over 63 years, held the record for the longest unbroken run in a London theatre in 2015. Additionally, several of Christie's works have become popular movies, including Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile.
Agatha Christie died in 1976 but her books continue to be popular today. For one week every year, lovers of her stories can go to the International Agatha Christie Festival in Torquay. People dress up in clothes from the 1920s and 1930s, like characters in her stories. "Murder" is everywhere, and visitors have a lot of fun trying to discover who the "killer" is.

C
The American school has changed dramatically since those lively days of my boyhood, and the change seems to have made it a place where few events happen. I know this remarkable truth because every day that I met one of my children after school, I said, "How was school today?"
And the child would reply, "Okay, I guess."
"You guess? Didn't anything happen there today?"
"Like what?"
"Oh I don't know. The cause of the Civil War?"
"Dad, what's Civil War?"
"You remember the earthquakes that hit Egypt?"
"Who's Egypt?"
I have never met a father or mother who got anything other than true-false answers to after school questions.
The best a parent can do today is partly-involved in the school work of a child.
"Sign this test, Dad," said my youngest daughter one evening, and her left hand casually covered the top two inches of the front page.
"May I see the mark first?" I replied.
"It's not important. You and Mom always say it's learning, not marks, that counts."
"Right, but I'd like to learn about your mark. Is it lower than a D?"
"Dad, you have to remember that a mark is merely the teacher's opinion."
"Is it lower than an F? Have you gotten the world's first G?"
Well, it took an hour before my daughter showed me her mark on her test, and it took me a half-hour to decide whether to sign it.
Then I asked to see the composition that she had written. On the top of the composition was a bright red D. I asked her if "D" was the title of the composition. A sweet smile spread across her face, and she said, "Yes, Daddy. How did you know? 'D' stands for 'delightful', and that's what my teacher thought of my composition."
28. What can be inferred from the first dialogue between the father and his child?
A. Their relationship is quite terrible.
B. The father is always asking complex questions.
C. After several years of schooling the child is smart and lovely.
D. The child's knowledge of history and geography is very limited.
29. What does the bright red "D" on the top of the composition truly indicate?
A. An excellent remark from the teacher.
B. A below-average grade given by the teacher.
C. The title of the girl's composition.
D. A letter written by the father to delight his daughter.
30. What is the father's attitude towards American education today?
A. Supportive. B. Neutral. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.
31. What's the best title of the passage?
A. How to Communicate with Children B. True or False Questions
C. The Change in American Schools Today D. Whether to Sign or Not
D
Everyone has a childhood full of dreams. Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before World War I, we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim(模糊的)memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading about other people's observations and discoveries. Then something happens, that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you clear up the riddle which has been bothering you for a long time, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist, up to point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.
32. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. The writer was deaf.
B. The writer's brothers and sisters didn't like him.
C. The writer was born in a naturalist's family.
D. The writer was interested in nature in his childhood.
33. What can we learn from the author's summer holiday in Hungary?
A. He was too young to have memory. B. He didn't have his own room and toys.
C. His family was too large to remember. D. He was quite busy with observing nature.
34. What does the underlined word "riddle" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. mystery B. pain C. answer D. tiredness
35. Why does the author say he is a naturalist rather than a scientist?
A. Because he has lots of trouble in other subjects.
B. Because he lacks some qualities required of a scientist.
C. Because he comes up with solutions in a most natural way.
D. Because he just reads about other people's observations and discoveries.

Some simple tips to avoid burnout and protect your health
In 2018 1 suffered from terrible burnout(过度劳累). It was caused by overworking, and not giving enough attention to my health. I've since recovered from burnout. I use the following as a checklist to help me keep a work-life balance and my best health possible.
Have other hobbies outside of work
During burnout I discovered music. 36 It doesn't matter what your hobby is as long as it makes you happy and doesn't require your doing regular work. Trust me: you can't have a work-life balance if you don't have a life.
Plan non-work time
I am naturally a workaholic. If you're a workaholic like me, you probably need to plan non-work and other fun time for yourself. 37 Instead, put aside a few hours or days of "you time" to help keep you healthy and happy.
38
You need some amount of time to wind down before your brain can rest and sleep. I personally don't sleep well if I watch TV shows for hours before my bed time, but everyone is different. Some others can't have a sound sleep after a long time using their cell phones.
Cook your own meals
I realize that not everyone can cook their own meals. However, I truly believe that food is central to life and being human, and that the time spent making and eating food should be enjoyed. I usually try to cook my own lunch whenever I can. 39
Walk to your destination when you can
40 But I do it as much as possible. Not only is walking great exercise, it also works well with multitasking. I try to take many of my calls that don't require my presence while I'm on a walk.
A. Get a long time to sleep
B. Reduce screen time before sleep
C. I have a hard time sitting still and doing nothing.
D. This has been my main non-work interest ever since.
E. This is hard to do when it's icy cold and snowing in New York.
F. Don't wait for your once-a-year vacation to make time for yourself.
G. Not only does this make sure what I'm eating is healthy, but it helps me slow down.
