My first intrductin t Chinese art was an early mrning walk in Beihai Park in Beijing. There, I saw elderly peple writing n the pavement with paintbrushes which were a metre lng! An imprtant king had the statues prduced t prtect his bdy after he died. They stayed under the grund with the dead king fr ver 2 ,000 years , until they were discvered by a farmer in 1974.
At the China Art Museum, in Shanghai, I saw wnderful 16th-century Chinese paintings f tall muntains, trees and cliffs. The paintings were beautiful, but they didn't lk very realistic t me at the time. “Muntains aren't like that,” I thught. But that was befre the last stp n my trip: the muntains f Zhangjiajie Natinal Park.
These muntains were used by film directr James Camern in his sci-fi film Avatar because they lk like smething frm anther planet. On my last weekend in China, I tk a cable car up int the muntains there. Trees grew n the sides f hundred-metre cliffs, and strange twers f rck appeared ut f the mrning fg. It lked just like the pictures in the China Art Museum. Fr a mment, I felt like I was inside a Chinese painting!
