Living and dealing with kids can be a tough (棘手的,难办的) job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be 10 tougher.
If I have learned anything in my last 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree 11 when you get along. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart (疏远). When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not 12 them doesn’t solve anything.
Communication begins with the care about another. Even 13 you just say “Hi,” and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.
Have you noticed the meaning of the word “communication” in a dictionary? It would say the exchange of ideas 14 of communication: a letter or message. To maintain a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know 15 you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note.
When dealing with parents, you always have to make 16 feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, you'd ask them 17 to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.
This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home 18 midnight after the fireworks, but she was late getting back. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was 19 , they weren’t as mad and let the thing go. Communication was the key factor here.
Communication isn’t a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel-listening is the key factor to communication.

17.A.politely B.quickly C.impatiently D.angrily
18.A.to B.at C.on D.by

My 20-year-old daughter, Ann, living in Philadelphia, sent me a message the other day. “I need socks and shampoo.” She was actually asking me to prepare those things for her, but I thought she was playing a cell phone game. I decide not to be a helicopter (直升机) mother, and I prefer a more hands-off way.
But that’s not what I see at Drexel University where I teach. Most of my students talk to their parents three times a day or more. One student’s mother called her son because she didn’t hear from him for a few days. The son was in the library so he whispered (小声说) “hello”. The mother doubted that he was drinking, and kept on asking him to take a picture of himself. Holding a newspaper with that day’s date, the son had to take a photo of himself and sent it to his mother in order to prove that he wasn’t telling a lie.
I always think that my students should depend on themselves. I tell them that I will not check whether they miss classes and finish homework or not, because they are independent(独立的) thinkers and they should be responsible(负责的) for their own choices. But their parents don’t treat them like me. I know a mother. She puts her eyes on her son too much. Another mother checks her son’s credit card daily. However. I never do that. My daughters only come to me with important things when they need my decision. I think that’s because I give them space.
Many parents try to find if their kids are hiding from them. But we have to learn to respect boundaries (界限), even when technology is so powerful now. So I am going to do my best not to be a helicopter parent.

Five thousand years ago, carrots only grew in Afghanistan (阿富汗) and most were purple. Only a few were orange as they are today! Farmers in the Netherlands (荷兰) were looking for a fruit or vegetable to symbolize their king, William of Orange, and orange carrots were just what they were looking for—they became the ancestors of all modern carrots.
Many plants only grow in certain places on the earth, often deep in the jungle (丛林). The home of potatoes is in the mountains of the Andes in South America. Bananas come from Papua New Guinea and lemons grow wild in China. But once people real ized that many of these plants were good to eat, they took them far from the places where they grew. Fruit, especially, interested thirsty travellers. Arab businessmen transported different fruits and vegetables around the world, such as oranges, which they took from Asia to remote countries such as Spain. The Spanish returned from South America with many new types of food, including chocolate, pepper and corn.
People often had problems deciding what to do with these new fruits and vegetables, or used them for different purposes from today. Carrots were used not as food but as medicine to protect people from poison (毒药) or even (it was believed) to make people fall in love. The first tomatoes and pineapples were grown not as food but to make the garden look pretty. And many people were worried about potatoes—although they are good for us, their leaves are poisonous. In Germany, people only began eating potatoes when the king ordered that people who did not eat them would have their ears and noses cut off!
Today, we are so used to our different types of food that we don’t think about where they came from. But for each pineapple, potato or carrot we eat, there is a long history!
35.Why did the farmers in the Netherlands prefer orange carrots to purple ones?
A.To serve their king a healthier vegetable. B.To remind people of their king, William of Orange.

D.Carrots were even believed to make people fall in love.
38.The structure of the passage may be________.
(1=Paragraph 1 2=Paragraph 2 3=Paragraph 3 4-Paragraph 4)

B.
C.

五、阅读回答问题
I had never lived in a dorm(寝室) before. Studying in the US gave me this new experience. The dorm I live in is called Village Girls. You need to bring your cleaning things and clothes from your home. But it’s also important to bring things you may find unnecessary, like toys or something you hold dear. You may think it unnecessary, but you’ll find that having something that reminds you of home can help you a lot.
When I first arrived, I only brought those things on the school list. However, there was an empty feeling in my heart, a sense of loneliness. There were no toys to hug at night, nor anything I could look at and be reminded of home. That’s when I realized that though we saw things like toys as unnecessary, we needed them more than anything else.
It is also important to make friends. Though most parents prefer you to find someone with good grades, I think it’s better to choose someone with a good heart. If you’re shy, it is even more important to greet everyone in your dorm. That’s because once you keep yourself away from others, people may think you are cold.
A friend of mine once told me: “No matter how much you’ve grown, you’re still a kid at heart.” I’ve come to realize that it is true. No matter how old we are, our inner (内心的) selves still need love and comfort (安慰). With a friend and a toy in hand, I hope you’ll find joy no matter where you are.
