Around the world, people have different traditional foods to celebrate different festivals. Traditional foods for the new year show good luck and good health.
An English Christmas dinner has a meal of turkey, and it also includes pies and plum puddings (李子布丁). In Germany, Christmas is celebrated with bread, cookies and cakes. They are made like Christmas trees. In France, Christmas dessert is a cake with cream on it.
In southern parts of India, there is a three-day festival in mid-January called Pongal. It includes rice and a dish of rice cooked with sugar.   
Japan celebrates the New Year with a seven-day festival. It begins from January 1st. Food is cooked before the festival so people don't need to cook during the festival. On New Year's Day, various dishes called Osechi ryori(御节料理) are served — each dish is a wish for the New Year.
In most Asian countries, the New Year begins with the first full moon of the first Chinese Lunar month. Each place has its special food to welcome the coming year. There was once a little gray planet that was very sad because the people living there hadn’t looked after it, though they had all the inventions and space ships you could ever need. They had polluted the whole planet so seriously that there were no plants or animals left.
One day, a little boy was walking on the planet when he passed a cave(洞穴) and noticed a small red flower. Huang Meihua is a 21-year-old girl from Sichuan Province. In the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, she was badly hurt and her leg had to be cut off after that. Recently, she has received an invitation from a Canadian college to experience flying courses during the coming winter vacation.
Several years ago, a powerful earthquake happened in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province. Huang Meihua failed to escape(逃跑). She had to be sent to hospital on a helicopter(直升飞机). Since that day she has dreamt of flying a plane.
Coming from a small town, Huang could not speak or write English. But she found every possible way to make it up by herself. When the Canadian college came to her school, the staff heard about Huang’s story and decided to offer her a chance. The course in February in Vancouver will last three weeks, including five to ten hours’ flying and general knowledge of flying.
