On July 31, 1697, a French lawyer named Jacques Sennacques wrte a message t remind a cusin in the Netherlands t send him a relative’s death certificate. T prevent thers frm reading the message, the nte was carefully flded, r “letter lcked.” The technique was used befre the inventin f envelpes. Hwever, fr reasns unknwn, the nte never reached the recipient and was instead stred in a pstmaster’s trunk, where it remained undetected fr centuries. Nw, a team f internatinal researchers has deciphered(破译) the cntents f the ver 300-year-ld sealed letter—withut pening it!
The chain f events leading t this technlgy began in 2015 when MIT expert Jana Dambrgi gt a call frm Daniel Starza Smith, a researcher at King’s Cllege Lndn. “He asked me, ‘What wuld yu d if I tld yu there was a trunk with 600 unpened letters?’”
The trunk had nce belnged t 17th-century pstmaster Simn de Brienne. Histrians believe the pst ffice stred the undelivered letters. That’s because, in the 17th century, it was the recipient, nt the sender, wh bre the pstage cst. When Brienne died in 1707, he dnated the trunk f letters t an rphanage. Smehw, the trunk eventually made its way t the pstal museum, where it lay until recently.
Since pening the letters wuld destry them, Dambrgi and her team decided t develp technlgy t unseal them virtually. They began by using a high-reslutin X-ray scanner t create a detailed three-dimensinal image f a sealed letter. While the writing inside shwed up very clearly, the numerus layers f flded paper pressed clse tgether caused the wrds t verlap(重叠).
T slve the issue, the researchers created sphisticated algrithm(算法) capable f decipheringthe writing in the cleverly flded letter, crease by crease. The virtual pening allwed the team t read the cntents “while preserving letter lcking evidence.” The algrithm tk almst five years t perfect. Once perfected, they used it t pen fur lcked letters and fully decde(解码) the ne frm Sennacques.

    A. were badly damagedB. were all decded
    C. remained very freshD. were very fragile
    31. Hw did the researchers decde the letter frm Sennacques?

Earth's lngest artificial structure is usually said t be the Great Wall f China while the secnd-lngest is nt a wall, but a fence. It stretches fr 5,614km acrss eastern Australia and is intended t stp the cuntry's wild dgs, the dinges, frm hunting sheep.Z

A secnd is that nly a third f these studies examined the impact f fences n anything ther than the target species invlved, meaning the animals purpsely intended t be kept in r ut.
Nn-target species, hwever, are ften thse that have their frtunes mst greatly reshaped by the appearance f ples and wire. Australian fences intended t keep ut dinges are als barriers t lng-necked turtles, which travel great distances ver land when mving between nesting sites. In Btswana fences built t spare cattle frm wildlife-brne disease result in serius interference with wildebeest (角马)migratins.
Nt every creature fares badly. Hawks (鹰)in Mntana gladly sit n newly built livestck fences t hunt small animals, while fence-based spiders in Suth Africa utperfrm their tree-based cusins when it cmes t catching insects.
Often, thugh, the winners are creatures that cause truble fr existing ecsystems. Keeping dinges ut f large parts f Australia has allwed aggressive red fxes t multiply. Native rdents (啮齿类动物)have suffered as a result. Sme have been brught t the edge f extinctin.
    32. Which is a purpse f building fences?
    A. T expand the bundary f a cuntry. B. T prtect livestck like sheep and cattle.
    C. T stp wild animals frm being hunted. D. T help peple mve arund freely.
    33. What can we learn abut the studies n fences?
    A. Data n the impact f fences have been prved.
    B. 50% f the studies fcus n just five cuntries.
    C. Previus researches were cmplete and systematic.
    D. Abut tw-thirds f the studies fcus n the target animals.
34.Which animals unexpectedly benefit frm fences?
    A. Cattle in Btswana. B. Wildebeest in Btswana.
    C. Red fxes in Australia. D. Native rdents in Australia.
    35. What is the writer's attitude t the fences arund the wrld?
