Here's a short piece from the September 2020 issue of the magazine, in the section called Advances on Science, Technology and Medicine. And some stories are as follows from around the globe.
From Argentina:
The earliest dinosaurs laid soft-shelled eggs, scientists say. A new chemical analysis of a more than 200-million-year-old fossilized egg from Patagonia in South America — and a nest of more recent eggs from Mongolia in Asia found in the Gobi Desert — revealed a thin film matching the characteristics of modern soft-shelled eggs.
From England:
Scientists found that 20 deep water wells, previously thought to be natural sinkholes and ponds, were dug by Neolithic humans. The wells form a circle two kilometers in diameter, with the Durrington Walls monument at its center, just three kilometers from Stonehenge.
From Brazil:
Researchers documented the largest lightning ball ever recorded. The “mega-flash,” which extended for more than 700 kilometers in southern Brazil in 2018, was detected by a new advanced weather satellite in geostationary orbit (静止轨道).
From Indonesia:
Scientists identified a rare nose-horned dragon lizard (蜥蜴) in the forests of North Sumatra. Despite appearing in the mythology of the local Bataks, the visually striking species had been seen by scientists only once before — almost 130 years ago.
From Australia:
Submarine drones (潜艇无人机) uncovered a branch system of underwater “rivers” of salty water along Australia's continental shelf. These flows carry organic matter from the coast into the deep ocean, and their volume varies seasonally, peaking in winter.

55. A branch system of underwater “rivers” of salty water was uncovered ________.
A. off the long coast B. deep into the fantastic ocean
C. in freezing cold winter D. along Australia's continental shelf

I was in the middle of the Amazon (亚马逊) with my wife, who was there as a medical researcher. We flew on a small plane to a faraway village. We did not speak the local language, did not know the customs, and more often than not, did not entirely recognize the food. We could not have felt more out of place.
We were raised on books and computers, highways and cell phones, but now we were living in a village without running water or electricity. It was easy for us to go to sleep at the end of the day feeling a little misunderstood.
Then one perfect Amazonian evening, with monkeys calling from beyond the village green, we played soccer. I am not good at soccer, but that evening it was wonderful. Everyone knew the rules. We all spoke the same language of passes and shots. We understood one another perfectly. As darkness came over the field and the match ended, the goal keeper, Juan, walked over to me and said in a matter-of-fact way, “In your home, do you have a moon too?” I was surprised.
After I explained to Juan that yes, we did have a moon and yes, it was very similar to his, I felt a sort of awe (敬畏) at the possibilities that existed in his world. In Juan's world, each village could have its own moon. In Juan's world, the unknown and undiscovered was vast and marvelous. Anything was possible.
In our society, we know that Earth has only one moon. We have looked at our planet from every angle and found all of the wildest things left to find. I can, from my computer at home, pull up satellite images of Juan's village. There are no more continents and no more moons to search for, little left to discover. At least it seems that way.
Yet, as I thought about Juan's question, I was not sure how much more we could really rule out. I am, in part, an ant biologist, so my thoughts turned to what we know about insect life and I knew that much in the world of insects remains unknown. How much, though? How ignorant (无知的) are we? The question of what we know and do not know constantly bothered me.
56. Which word cannot replace the underlined phrase in Paragraph 1?
A. Regretful. B. Strange. C. Uncomfortable. D. Foreign.
57. What made that Amazonian evening wonderful?
A. He learned more about the local language.
B. They had a nice conversation with each other.
C. They understood each other while playing.
D. He won the soccer game with the goal keeper.
58. Why was the author surprised at Juan's question about the moon?
A. The question was too complicated.
B. Juan knew so little about the world.
C. The author didn't know how to answer.
D. The author didn't think Juan was sincere.
59. What is the main function of referring to the “moon” in the passage?
A. It means the culture gap existing in our world.
B. It represents what we have known and haven't.
C. It shows how ignorant human beings are, especially Juan.
D. It serves as a trigger and makes the following parts happen.
60. What could be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. The Possible and the Impossible.
B. The Known and the Unknown.
C. The Civilized and the Uncivilized.
D. The Ignorant and the Intelligent.

Want to be successful? Write well!
Way back in 2012, Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit, wrote in a blog post for Harvard Business Review that he wouldn't hire anyone who used poor grammar. In fact, he required all applicants to take a grammar test before moving forward.
According to Wiens, he has found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing. What's more, he believes that grammar skills indicate several other valuable traits, including learning ability, professional credibility and attention to detail.
A year later, in 2013, Grammarly reviewed 100 LinkedIn profiles(个人档案) of native English speakers and found that: Professionals with fewer grammar mistakes in their profiles earned higher positions and can get increased promotions.
So, writing well is really an essential ability that is treasured by your boss and you shouldn't abandon.
On the other hand, writing is good for your mind and body. Writing, specifically by hand has numerous benefits for your health and well-being. For starters, it can improve your memory. When we write by hand, we have to coordinate verbal and fine movement systems. Researchers have also found that handwriting, in particular the forming of letters, is the key to not only improving your memory but also forming new ideas and learning. In fact, if you want to slow down mental aging, writing by hand is your best bet because it forces you to use more of your moving skills.
Consequently, you should improve your writing skills. The most obvious place to start is to begin writing frequently. After all, practice makes perfect. However, don't force yourself to write daily. Instead, make this a weekly event-- allow yourself to write whatever's on your mind.
Writing isn't an antiquated skill best left in your school days. Written communication is—and will remain—essential.
61. According to Kyle Wiens, skillful grammar using may shows an employee's ______.
A. Higher positions
B. Less focus on details
C. Better learning capacity
D. Slower mental aging
62. How does writing by hand benefit your health and well-being?
A. By helping improve your memory and form new ideas.
B. By coordinating verbal and non-verbal systems.
C. By using more of your verbal skills.
D. By earning higher positions and better promotions.
63. Which of the following shares the same meaning with the underlined word “antiquated”?
A. New-born.
B. Wide-spread.
C. Hard-earned.
D. Old-fashioned.
64. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To show the importance of one's grammar skills.
B. To explain why writing well is essential in workplace.
C. To persuade us to write well and improve related skills.
D. To recommend several tips on improving writing skills.
65. In which column(专栏) can you find this passage in a newspaper?
A. Science and Technology.
B. Education and Parenting.
C. Philosophy and Culture.
D. Politics and Economics.

My father always told me: “All work is noble.” He wasn't wealthy, but he earned a reasonable living. Thanks to his effort, I was able to go to an art college. I, however, wanted to do something different, something more interesting --- I was special!
After graduation, I moved to New York in search of a graphic designer job. It was winter and I only brought money to support myself for about a month. I wasn't worried --- I was sure I'd find a fantastic job immediately.
Within a few weeks, though, I found myself wandering around the streets having been rejected by every design office in town. My hostel rent was almost gone and I hadn't eaten for days. “How had I reached this point?” I wondered as I shuddered in my thin jacket. I was just about to give up when my dad called. He suggested I get a job in a restaurant until something else came along. At first, pride made me hesitate but I was cold, hungry, and unwilling to go home feeling ashamed and defeated.
I entered a cafe near one of the design offices that had turned me away and asked the manager if they were hiring. She said they were shorthanded, and offered me a job right away. Surprisingly, I found that I really enjoyed serving people. I started making big tips right away. Later, the manager learned that I had a design background and asked me to design the cafe menus. That led to a part-time job at an advertising company.
Previously, I had never considered being a waiter, but there I was. I eventually got my dream design job, but that winter I learned not to make assumptions(假定; 设想) about work.
