    教学目标

    通过本课时的教学,让学生达成以下目标:

    1.知识目标

    掌握单词和短语:junior high, score, senior high, stand, leader, name, university, simply, junior college, national, championship, succeed, scholarship, although, graduate, force, league, remain, achievement, prove, matter, try out for sth., lose heart, change one’s mind, succeed in doing sth., take notice of

    2.能力目标

    (1)通过阅读,了解斯巴德·韦伯以及全美职业篮球联赛。

    (2)学会讲述个人的生平经历。

    (3)提高学生阅读的能力,逐步掌握阅读技巧。

    3.情感目标

    通过阅读,培养学生在成长过程中无论遇到什么困难都永不言弃的精神。

    重点难点

    重点:学习并掌握本课时的单词和短语,理解文章大意,掌握重要句型。

    难点:灵活使用短语和句型,如:succeed in doing sth., take notice of, try out forsth.等。

    Step 1  Lead-in

    Ask and answer questions.

    Do you like playing basketball?

    Are you good at it?

    How often do you play basketball?

    Step 2  Presentation

    1. Present some new words by showing them some pictures.

    2. Ask them to read the new words together.

    3. Do B1. Match the words with their meanings.

    Step 3 Reading

    1. Use some questions to lead in reading the passage:

    (1) Is it easy for the short man to score points?

    (2) What do you know about Spud Webb?

    2. Tell them something about Spud Webb and introduce something about him.

      Ask them to discuss the following questions in groups and write down their

    answers.

    (1) How does the writer describe Spud’s “small”?

    (2) Why does the writer talk about his “small” again and again?

    Answers: (1)He was very small—much smaller than the other kids at school.

    Because he was too small.

    Spud often had to sit in the stands because of his height.

    Because he was only 170 cm tall.

    Because all its players were more than 20 cm taller than he was.

    (2)Because the writer wants to prove size and body type do not matter.If we never give up, we can succeed through hard work.

    Step4Production

    1. Do B3. Fill in the dialogue.

    (1) Ask the students to finish the task individually.

    (2) Tell them to check the answers in groups.

    (3) Check the answers together and read the dialogue.

    2. Do B4. Find out how Spud did not give up at different stages of his life.

    (1) Let the students finish the task individually. Tell them to read the passage

    again if necessary.

    (2)Check the answers together.

    points in his first game and became the star of the team

    (2) practised even harder and got the coach to change his mind. He went on to

    become leader of the team

    (3) to play at a junior college. There he led his team to the national championship

    Step 5 Language points

    1. He was very small—much smaller than the other kids at school.

    他很矮——比学校里的其他孩子要矮不少。

    比较级前可以加much, a little, even等表示程度加强。

    Shanghai is much bigger than my hometown.上海比我的家乡大多了。

    He practised even harder and finally achieved his dream.

    他训练更加刻苦,终于实现了他的梦想。

    (1)mind名词,意为想法,意见

    keepsth. in mind记住某事change one’s mind改变某人的主意

    make up one’s mind下定决心

    【拓展】mind 还可作动词,意为介意,在乎mind doing sth.意为介意做某事

    I hope you don’t mind.我希望你不要介意。

    Would you mind looking after my child?你介意照顾一下我的孩子吗?

     (2)get sb. to do sth.意为让某人做某事

    My mother always gets me to play the piano for an hour every day.

    妈妈总叫我每天弹钢琴一小时。

    Can you get her to agree with us? 你能让她同意我们的想法吗?

    3. As a result, he succeeded in getting a scholarship.

    结果,他成功获得了奖学金。

    succeedin doing sth. 意为“(在某方面)取得成功;达到目的

    succeed是动词,success是名词,successful是形容词,successfully是副词。

    My brother succeeded in winning the competition.

    =My brother won the competition successfully.

    我哥哥成功地在竞赛中获胜。

    Mr Wang has success at work. He is a success/ He is successful.

    王先生在工作上很成功,他是个成功人士。

    4. He remained there for about a year before the NBA took notice of him.

    NBA注意到他之前,他在那儿待了大约一年。

    1remain动词,意为逗留,待

    作连系动词时, 表示维持某种状态。

    I will remain in Beijing for a week.我要在北京待一周。

    Why does she remain silent? 她为何总保持沉默?

    2take notice of 意为注意,相当于动词notice

    I didn’t take notice of him when I walked past.

    路过的时候我没有注意到他。
