In the ancient story The Boy Who Cried Wolf, the naughty boy repeatedly lies to nearby villagers by shouting that a wolf is attacking his sheep. When a wolf actually attacks, the villagers ignore the boy’s now-genuine cries. The moral, as parents tell their children, is: Don’t lie. But it could equally be: If you’ re going to lie, mix it up a little. Maybe, cry bear now and then.
In southern Africa, there’s a bird that is adept in this: the fork-tailed drongo(叉尾燕卷尾). “These little birds can make at least 51 different alarm calls, and only six of these are their own. The rest are cover versions of the alarm calls of other species,” says Tom Flower from the University of Cape Town.
While working with meerkats(灰沼狸)in the Kalahari Desert, Flower noticed that the drongos would often scare them away from food by mimicking(模仿) the alarms of other species —including, possibly, the meerkats themselves—even though no predators(捕食者) were around. He found that the birds spend a quarter of their time following other animals like meerkats. The drongos sometimes sound a false alarm when their companions find food. As the meerkats run away from then on-existent predator, the drongos immediately grab the food.
This strategy clearly works, but why does it keep on working? Why don’t the meerkats get wise to the false alarms? Well, actually, they do. Through his playback experiments, Flower showed that meerkats react less strongly if they hear a second false alarm 20 minutes after the first one, and even less strongly if they hear a third. But if he changed the third alarm to a different one, the meerkats reset their reactions and become watchful again.
That’s exactly what the drongos do. They often try to steal food from the same individual and on three-quarters of these repeated attempts, they change their alarms. They’re also more likely to change if their first attempt fails; when they do, they’ re more likely to succeed on the next go.
24. What does the underlined phrase “adept in” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. curious about B. unaware of C. good at D. concerned about
25. Why do the drongos mimic the alarms of the meerkats?
A. To steal their food. B. To beg them for help.
C. To warn them of danger. D. To stop them from doing harm.
26. On what basis do the meerkats reset their reactions to an alarm?
A. How long it lasts. B. How hungry they are.
C. How loud it sounds to them. D. How similar it is to the last one.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The bird that cries wolf changes its lies
B. Predators that kill sheep are tricked sometimes
C. Surviving in the Kalahari Desert is never easy
D. The moral of The Boy Who Cried Wolf is still true
C
For eight months up to this April, a French bookstore chain had video in a Paris shop fed to software that examines shoppers’ movements and facial expressions for surprise, dissatisfaction, confusion or hesitation. When a shopper walked to the end of an aisle(走廊)only to return with confusion to a bookshelf, the software immediately messaged clerks, who went to help. Sales rose by a tenth.
This could be a chance, some say, for physical retailers(零售商)to trim the advantage that data have long given online sellers. A race is on to work out how best to collect and use emotions data, be it to improve packaging, displays, music, or the content, says Rana June, chief executive of a firm in New York called Lightwave. It measures shoppers’ emotions for consumer-goods firms.
Not everyone is impressed. Nielsen, a consumer research company, views using technology to work out shoppers’ emotions unfavorably. “It is a little annoying,” says Ricardo Gutiérrez, head of shopper insights at Nielsen Colombia in Bogotá.
But it is much cheaper. Nielsen charges roughly $10,000 to interview 25 shoppers about three products. Angus.ai, the Paris start up behind the technology, charges just €59 ($66) a month per camera. What’s more, conventional market research can mislead. People typically “edit” responses to make themselves sound sensible, when purchases are often driven by subconscious(潜意识的) emotions. And surveys can also ask the wrong questions—such as how much people like a product when what really matters is whether, say, it makes them feel attractive.
The notion of “retail therapy(疗法)”,consumers driven to spend when they are feeling blue, is an obvious example of shopping’s emotional side. Whichever store is the first to work out how to spot mildly depressed customers could make big money.
28. What was the function of the video in the Paris bookstore?
A. Checking its daily sales.
B. Examining its clerks’ work.
C. Monitoring its book storage.
D. Watching its shoppers’ emotions.
29. What does the underlined word “trim” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Increase B. Miss C. Reduce D. Introduce.
30. What is the author’s attitude to Angus.ai’s technology?
A. Doubtful B. Supportive C. Tolerant D. Opposed.
31. Why is retail therapy mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To prove shopping is mood-driven.
B. To predict the future of physical retail.
C. To introduce different types of shoppers.
D. To explain the disadvantages of overconsumption.

16-year-old Abigail, knowing that she was in for a rough afternoon, sighed as the door shut behind her mother. She thought back to when her mother asked her to watch her younger brother, Harry, for a few hours while she went to a meeting at work.
“What will Harry and I do together for an entire afternoon?” She complained. Her brother had a reputation for causing trouble. “You can play outside,” her mother replied. “You both love to play basketball.” “I guess that would be okay,” Abigail answered.
Now Abigail looked out of the window at the pouring rain and frowned (皱眉).There went her plan of spending the afternoon playing basketball. She looked at Harry nervously and said, “It’s raining too hard to go outside, so what would you like to do instead?” Harry shrugged (耸肩) his shoulders. “Do you want to color with crayons?” “Coloring is boring,” Harry said.
Abigail sighed. This was exactly what she had worried about. “Come on, Harry, we can’ t just sit here all afternoon. Please think of something you want to do.” Harry’s face lit up as he asked, “Can we play hide- and-seek(捉迷藏)?”
Abigail had stopped playing hide-and-seek years ago, but she was willing to do almost anything to keep Harry out of trouble until their mother came home. She covered her eyes with her hands and started counting. When she reached 50, she called out, “Ready or not, here I come!”
Abigail started by looking in the family room and then made her way into the kitchen. As she wondered where Harry was hiding, the perfect place popped into her head. She raced to the garage and climbed the stairs to the attic(阁楼). The floor was so dusty that she easily followed Harry’s footprints to where he was hiding behind a pile of boxes. “I found you!” she laughingly yelled. As Harry hopped up to run away, he knocked over several boxes. Abigail was about to scold him when the contents of the boxes caught her eye. Beautiful beads (珠子) of all shapes, colors, and sizes were now rolling around the attic floor.

第一节 应用文(满分15分)
Last Sunday, dozens of students in our school did voluntary work in the book exhibition held in the Wang Zengqi Museum.
During the activity, some of them assisted workers in keeping order when visitors streamed into the museum. Meanwhile, others delivered leaflets introducing the distinguished works written by Wang Zengqi. Besides, they volunteered to provide guide service for visitors to locate what they were eager to read with enthusiasm as well.
It was a very meaningful and unforgettable activity. Not only did they help others, but they also learned a lot from the experience.
第二节 读后续写(满分20分)
“Cool beads! Do you think Mom would mind if we used them?” said Harry, bending down to pick them up. “I don’t see why she would when they are just sitting up here gathering dust,” Abigail replied with a wide smile. “Besides, how could she mind if we used them to make gifts for her? These would make awesome necklaces.” Harry returned Abigail’ smile as they collected the beads, excited by the thought of having something fun to do on a rainy afternoon.
When their mother came home, Abigail and Harry presented her with their gifts. Abigail’s necklace had been carefully designed and planned coming in its own unique pattern. Harry, on the other hand, had not planned, stringing his beads in a very casual way, picking whatever bead was nearest and adding it to the others. The end results, however, were still interesting and beautiful. “What a wonderful welcome!” said their mother happily. “I had forgotten all about my grandmother’s collection of beads. Where did you find them?” “In the attic,” replied Harry with a smile. “They were playing hide-and-seek!”

M: Excellent but not expensive. And people in the hotels were very helpful and friendly.
W: Do local people speak English?
M: Mm, you know few can speak English. Sometimes I had to use body language to communicate.
W: Interesting. And did you buy much while you were there?
M: Bags there are fashionable but much more expensive than those in our state. But you can get some wool sweaters as presents.
W: Wow, I’m looking forward to it.

M: Is that Ms. Smith?
W: Yes. How can I help you?
M: Hello, Ms. Smith. This is John. My friend Linda told me that you have a two-bedroom apartment to rent. Is that right?
W: Yes. My parents have moved to another city and I am going to study abroad for two years.
M: Do you have any furniture?
W: Of course. It is equipped with all the basic furniture, such as a TV set and a fridge.
M: That’s OK. Does it have Internet access?
W: Definitely.
M: Great. How much is the rent?
W: 300 dollars a month.
M: OK. By the way, what else should I pay attention to?
W: If you have visitors, avoid making too much noise.
M: How about keeping dogs?
W: Well, you know they would make a mess.
M: I see.

M: Do you know there is an art exhibition in our city?
W: No. I guess it must be at the Exhibition Centre.
M: I thought it was there at first, or at the Popular Art Gallery. But it is taking place inside the City Shopping Centre.
W: Are you kidding? I couldn’t believe it.
M: Yes. I find it kind of cool.
W: What is being displayed? I am a crazy fan of modern paintings.
M: There is a painting section showing the works of contemporary artists.
W: Fantastic! What about other sections?
M: There is also a photography section, a sculpture section and a video section.
W: A video section?
M: Yeah, short movies about famous artists. It’s actually the second most popular section after the photography section.
W: I see. Would you like to see the exhibition with me?
M: With pleasure.

W: Different countries have different waste management systems. One thing for sure: it’s never too hard to throw your garbage in Indonesia. What Indonesians commonly do is put their garbage in their personal garbage area which are usually located in the front of their houses, right at the side of the street. In Germany, different kinds of garbage are put in different colored cans. For example, blue garbage cans are for paper and cardboard, and pizza boxes go to gray garbage cans. Green and white garbage cans are for glass. Yellow garbage cans are for plastic and metals. In Korea, you are expected to sort your waste and put it into the right bags. Each district in Korea has its own official garbage bags. The garbage bags could be bought at the local supermarket. Proper waste management isn’t a hard thing to do, but it needs to be supported by your family members and your surroundings in order to gain benefits from it.
