Scientists have lng sught t prevent sharp memries frm dulling with age, but the prblem remains unsettled. Nw research published in Scientific Reprts suggests virtual reality might help lder peple recall facts and events based n specific details.
The study invlved 42 healthy lder adults frm the San Francisc Bay Area. Half spent a dzen hurs ver fur weeks playing a virtual-reality game called Labyrinth; they wre headsets and walked in place, walking virtual neighbrhds while cmpleting small tasks. The ther half, in the cntrl grup, used electrnic tablets t play games that did nt require recalling details. After 15 sessins (期), the latter perfrmed rughly the same as befre n a lng-term memry test. But the Labyrinth players gain an imprvement in memry thrugh the VR game. A scientist Peter Wais f the University f Califrnia said the imprvements brught them up t the level f anther grup f yunger adults taking the same memry tests.
Meredith Thmpsn, an educatin researcher, studies learning thrugh VR games but was nt invlved in the new study. “It wuld be great t actually fllw peple ver time and see what this type f game des fr lng-term memry.” She says, adding VR can prvide greater invlvement than ther games. Wais’s team is nw investigating hw lng the bserved effects last and which elements f the training have the mst impact.
A cgnitive (认知) psychlgist, Daniel Simns, wh was als nt invlved in the study, ntes experiments with ther games that claim t train the brain have ften failed t evaluate this. And it remains unclear hw test perfrmance in a labratry setting might translate t real-wrld situatins. The utcme, Simns ntes, “needs t be repeated, ideally with a much larger grup, befre it’s treated as a strng finding.”
Fr nw, Wais says, the team hpes its studies with similar-sized grups will help draw funding t test the game in a larger pl f participants.

The Gata used t lk annyed when they received pwer bills that rutinely tpped $200. Last September the cuple mved int a 1,500-square-ft hme in Premier Gardens, an area f 95 “zer-energy hmes” (ZEH) just utside twn. Nw they’re actually eager t see their electricity bills. The grand ttal ver the 10 mnths they’ve lived in the three-bedrm huse:$75. Fr the past tw mnths, they haven’t paid a cent.
ZEH cmmunities are the leading edge f technlgies that might smeday create huses that prduce as much energy as they cnsume. Premier Gardens is ne f a half-dzen subdivisins (住宅开发项目) in Califrnia where every hme cuts pwer cnsumptin by 50%, mstly by using lw pwer appliances and slar panels.
Aside frm the panels n the rf, Premier Gardens lks like a cmmunity f traditinal hmes. But inside, special windws cut pwer bills by blcking slar heat in summer and keeping indr warmth in winter.
The rest f the energy savings cmes frm the slar units. They dn’t just feed the hme they serve. If they generate mre pwer than the hme is using, the extra flws int the utility’s pwer grid (电网). The residents are billed by “ net metering”:they pay fr the amunt f pwer that they get frm the grid, minus the kilwatts (千瓦) they feed int it. If a hme generates mre pwer than it uses, the bill is zer.
That sunds like a bad deal fr the pwer cmpany, but it’s nt. Slar hmes prduce the mst pwer n the ht sunny afternns when everyne rushes hme t turn up the air cnditiner. “It helps us lwer usage at peak pwer times,” says slar expert Mike Keesee. “That lets us avid building cstly plants r buying expensive pwer at peak usage time.”
What’s nt t like?Mstly the csts. The special features can add $25,000 r mre t the purchase price f a huse. Tax breaks bring the cst dwn, especially in Califrnia, but in many states ZEHs can be extremely expensive. Fr the cnsumer, it’s a matter f paying nw fr the hardware t save later n the pwer bill.
32. Why is the Gata eager t see their electricity bills nw?
A. They want t cut dwn their utility’ expenses.
B. They want t see hw much they have saved.
C. They want t knw if they are able t pay.
D. They want t avid being vercharged.
33. What is special abut the ZEH cmmunities?
A. They are built in harmny with the envirnment.
B. They aim t be independent in pwer supply.
C. They are subdivided int half a dzen sectins.
D. They have created cutting edge technlgies.
34. What des the “net metering” practice mean t the pwer cmpany?
A. Reduced peratinal csts.
B. Mre pressure at peak time.
C. Increased electricity utput.
D. Less prfits in the shrt term.
35. The authr believes that buying a huse in a ZEH cmmunity ______ .
A. cntributes t envirnmental prtectin
B. is but a dream fr average cnsumers
C. gives the wner great tax benefits
D. is wrthy in the lng run

Grcery stres try t have enugh emplyees at checkut t get all their custmers thrugh with minimum delay. 37 Any small interruptin — a price check, a chatty custmer — can have dwnstream effects, hlding up an entire line.
If there are three lines in the stre, delays will happen randmly at different registers. Think abut the prbability: 38 S it’s nt just in yur mind: Anther line prbably is mving faster.
Researchers have a gd way t deal with this prblem. Make all custmers stand in ne lng, snaking line — called a serpentine line — and serve each persn at the frnt with the next available register. 39 This is what they d at mst banks and fast-fd restaurants. With a serpentine line, a lng delay at ne register wn’t unfairly punish the peple wh lined up behind it. Instead, it will slw dwn everyne a little bit but speed up checkut verall.
40 It takes many registers t keep ne line mving quickly, and sme stres can’t affrd the space r manpwer. S wherever yur next wait may be: Gd luck.

As sn as I arrived, I realized I didn’t knw hw t rder the type f cffee I liked, and trying t find smewhere t live r stay was smething difficult t deal with.
