Howard Weistling wanted to be a comic strip (连环漫画) artist. But when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, he joined the Army.
After flight engineer training, Howard was shipped off to Europe. On his first flight, his plane was shot down over Austria. The entire crew of eight men landed safely. But a farmer found Howard hiding in his barn and turned him over to a prison of war camp in Barth, Germany. It was freezing and the men almost starved to death eating the guards’ garbage.
Hungry and homesick Howard dealt in the only way he knew how. He drew a comic strip. The book, made of cigarette wrappers bound together with scrap metal (废旧金属), was sent around the camp. Every couple of days he would add a new panel (小组). One panel at a time would be passed around the whole camp. And they’d have something to look forward to.
After an entire year of this, they woke one morning to find their guards gone. They fled and Howard finally got to go home. Just lucky to get out alive, he left the book behind.
Back home in California, Howard soon had a wife and kids to feed so he had to set aside his dream of becoming an artist. He took a job as a gardener instead.
Morgan shared his father’s artistic gifts. At 15 his parents sent him to art school. And Howard got to see his son become a well-known painter before he died in 2002. That’s how, seven decades after the war, when a stranger in New York googled the name “Weistling,” he found Morgan online.
“I get an email from a gentleman and he says, ‘I think I may have some drawings your father did when he was a POW (prisoner of war) in World War II,’” Morgan recalls. “‘Would you like them?’ And I just stared at that email and started crying.”
Luckily Howard had engraved (雕刻) his name on the comic book, which is how the man from New York City had connected with Morgan. A couple of days later when it arrived in California, Morgan couldn’t believe it. “It was like getting my father back,” Morgan says. “It was like him being able to tell me the story over again — only this time it was real in my hands.”
24. Why does the text detail Howard’s life as a POW?
A. To express war cannot stop his pursuit of success.
B. To show that passion for art helped ease his sufferings.
C. To prove that loss of freedom encouraged his creativity.
D. To tell us sufferings drive him to fight against his fate.
25. What can we infer about Howard’s comic strip in prison?
A. It satisfied prisoners’ curiosity. B. It aroused the guards’ sympathy.
C. It was popular among the prisoners. D. It raised prisoners’ confidence in freedom.
26. What contributes to the stranger’s success in finding Morgan?
A. The email from a gentleman. B. Howard’s experience in the war.
C. Morgan’s recalling of his father. D. Morgan’s status in the field of art.
27. What can we infer about Morgan from the last paragraph?
A. He didn’t believe the stranger’s story.
B. He was excited to get the comic strip.
C. He couldn’t wait to tell others his good news.
D. He hadn’t heard about his father’s war stories.
C
It should be one of the main goals in today’s society to reduce plastic consumption. Though many believe recycling will solve the problem, and continue using plastic, it’s actually the opposite. In 2013, 254 million tonnes of trash was produced in the U.S. alone, and only around 30% was recycled. This means the rest ended up in a landfill and will stay there for up to 1000 years.
Now Asian countries, including Vietnam and Thailand, are looking for new ideas to avoid plastic. One of those ideas was a new, eco-friendly way to pack their goods by avoiding plastic packaging. One of Perfect Homes Chiangmai’s team members noticed a creative way to reduce plastic that a supermarket called Rimping Supermarket was using. Little did he know that people all around the world would absolutely love this idea. “I just entered to get a few items while we were waiting to sign some contracts with our lawyer, who was delayed. When I noticed the vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and simply liked the idea. So I took a few pictures and posted them online,” he said.
With more than 3.5 million views and over 17 thousand shares, the idea became something people can encourage more supermarkets to implement (实施).
Some have noticed that not everything on the shelves is completely plastic-free to which the supermarket responded that they are taking one step at a time, but it’s not that easy. Many products come to the supermarkets pre-packaged and many companies are interested in wrapping their produce in plastic since it is the cheapest and the easiest option.
It’s now up to the shoppers to show the supermarket which they prefer. If everyone opts for the banana leaf packaging, they will probably stop stocking the items in plastic.
28. What can we infer about recycling from Paragraph 1?
A. The author thinks highly of recycling.
B. The US did a great job in recycling in 2013.
C. Recycling has failed to solve the plastic problem.
D. Recycling helps a lot in reducing plastic consumption.
29. Why did the man go to Rimping Supermarket?
A. To buy some items. B. To look for new ideas there.
C. To take photos of their shelves. D. To sign a contract with a lawyer.
30. What does the underlined phrase “opts for” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Doubts. B. Increases. C. Dislikes D. Chooses.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. Leaf Packaging Spreads Rapidly
B. Reducing Plastic Consumption
C. Recycling Avoids Plastic Packaging
D. A Good Option Makes A Difference
D
People often plan to receive medical exam but don’t, resulting in increasing health care cost. A surprising number of citizens mean to complete tax forms in time but forget to, forcing them to pay unnecessary fines. Many families miss the government deadline to complete financial aid forms, losing out on aid available for child care.
How can policymakers help people follow through on important tasks? They use carrots and sticks: bonuses (奖金), late fees, or regulations. These methods can be clumsy, and often aren’t effective for the situation at hand. Reminding people to form simple plans, however, provides a low-cost, simple, and powerful tool.
Evidence is growing that providing prompts (提示), which push people at key times to think through how and when they will follow through, make people more likely to act on tasks of importance. In one early randomized (随机的) study on tetanus vaccination (破伤风疫苗) rates, for example, a team of social psychologists (心理学家) showed that 28% of Oxford University seniors got the shot after being encouraged to review their weekly schedules and to select a possible time to stop by the health center. They were also given a list of times when shots were available and a map showing the health center’s location. Only 3% of the seniors got the shot when simply informed about how effective the shots were.
People who make a plan gain an advantage from their psychological forces. Specifically, they can overcome the tendency to put off as well as the tendency to be overly optimistic about the time it will take to accomplish a task. Imagine Sarah who wants to renew a car insurance, but it will require two hours of travel to and from a garage. Making a plan may lead her to take two hours off and have her responsibilities covered by her colleagues while she is away. Moreover, she will be less likely to underestimate the time needed to accomplish the task — a particularly common problem for complex tasks.
People mistakenly believe that their strong intentions are enough to push them to perform desired behaviors. These psychological research results stress the need for policy decisions that encourage plan making and improve social welfare.
32. What phenomenon is described in paragraph 1?
A. Heavy burden of daily life. B. Lack of task management skills.
C. Disappointment of over-ambitions. D. Failure to achieve original intentions.
33. What does the randomized tetanus vaccination study show?
A. People need to think deeply before they act.
B. Specific reminders help people accomplish plans.
C. Awareness of task significance matters in planning.
D. Seniors need encouragement to have vaccination shots.
34. What psychological benefit can people get from making a plan?
A. They are realistic in the time required. B. They are optimistic about the outcome.
C. They are confident to overcome hardship. D. They are careful with task arrangements.
35. Who may be the intended readers of this text?
A. Medical staff. B. Government officials.
C. Ordinary people. D. Social psychologists.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项有两项为多余选项。
There has been a remarkable rise in the popularity of house plants over the past few years, with trendy new shops popping up all over the country selling every kind of plant you can imagine. 36 But follow a few basic tips aid and you’ll soon get the hang of it.
Choosing your plant doesn’t seem that simple. It’s a common mistake to wander into a shop and grab the plant that you first fall for, but it’s important to understand what type of environment you’re introducing it to before picking one out. 37 For example, some plants are better suited to maximum light and heat, while others prefer cooler spots.
38 One of the most common reasons for houseplant killing is overwatering. You might think it has a constant thirst but chances are it won’t take to spending extended periods sitting in wet soil. Every plant is different, so research is once more key, but generally home-dwellers like watering most when they’re growing rapidly (spring and summer) and prefer an occasional water when the soil is dry, rather than as a daily routine. 39
Your plants may actually need feeding. While some house plants don’t need many nutrients to grow, others are greedy for extra nutritional goodness (especially those that display flowers and fruits).
40 And you’ll also need to check what type of fertilizer (肥料) each variety requires and how much to use each time.
A. Using good soil for your plant is vital.
B. Different plants require different amounts of water.
C. Taking care of plants is much easier than raising other creatures.
D. And always use water that has been brought up to room temperature.
E. Looking after house plants isn’t always as straightforward as some think.
F. As with watering, they’ll need more food during their growing season than during winter.
G. A little research before buying will save you lots of stress when you get you plants home.
